The product can also include analytics and data-integration components, and its editions differ in features and capacity. “SQL Server” therefore refers to more than the Database Engine alone.
What does SQL Server do?
The Database Engine manages data and provides controlled access and transaction processing. Microsoft describes it as “the core service for storing, processing, and securing data” in its Database Engine installation documentation.

SQL Server supports relational data as well as XML and JSON data. Depending on the installation and workload, the broader product can include services for analytics and data movement.
SQL Server and the Database Engine are not identical terms
The Database Engine is SQL Server’s central data service, but SQL Server installations may include additional components. For example, Analysis Services supports online analytical processing (OLAP) and data mining, while Integration Services moves, copies, and transforms data. The Database Engine also supports capabilities such as replication and full-text search. Which components are available depends on the release and edition.

Which SQL Server edition is for what?
Microsoft’s SQL Server 2025 (17.x) documentation describes editions with different intended uses and limits. The following figures are specifications for that release, not universal limits for every SQL Server version.
| Edition | Typical use and status | SQL Server 2025 (17.x) specifications |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise | Microsoft’s highest-capability offering for complex workloads; intended for production use. | Maximum relational database size: 524 PB. Other limits and features depend on the specific capability. |
| Standard | A balance of capabilities for business workloads; intended for production use. | Maximum relational database size: 524 PB; Database Engine compute capacity: lesser of four sockets or 32 cores; Database Engine buffer-pool memory limit: 256 GB. |
| Developer | For development and testing, with functionality corresponding to Enterprise or Standard. Not for production use. | Not stated in the cited edition summary; consult Microsoft’s edition documentation for feature-specific details. |
| Evaluation | Enterprise functionality for evaluation. | Deployment period: 180 days. |
| Express | Free entry-level database for learning and smaller applications. | Maximum relational database size: 50 GB; Database Engine compute capacity: lesser of one socket or four cores; Database Engine buffer-pool memory limit: 1,410 MB. |
| Express LocalDB | Lightweight, user-mode version of Express. | Separate capacity limits: not stated in the cited edition summary. |
Figures and edition descriptions in this table come from Microsoft’s SQL Server 2025 edition and component documentation and SQL Server 2025 changes documentation. The 524 PB database-size figure applies to both Standard and Enterprise; it does not mean those editions offer identical features or performance.

What changed in SQL Server 2025?
Microsoft says SQL Server 2025 discontinues Web edition and incorporates features previously available in Express with Advanced Services into Express. Edition lineups can change between releases, so identify the version whenever you discuss availability or limits.

How should you choose an edition?
- For learning or a smaller application: Express is the free entry-level edition. LocalDB is a lightweight user-mode option.
- For development or testing: Developer provides corresponding Enterprise or Standard functionality, but its license does not permit production use.
- For production workloads: Compare Standard and Enterprise against the features and capacity your application needs. Standard’s SQL Server 2025 compute and buffer-pool limits are listed above; Microsoft positions Enterprise for complex workloads.
- For a time-limited evaluation: Evaluation provides Enterprise functionality for 180 days, according to Microsoft’s SQL Server 2025 documentation.
Capacity figures alone do not determine the right edition. Check required features, workload scale, deployment needs, and current licensing terms. Microsoft notes that installation requirements depend on application needs and provides separate SQL Server installation planning guidance and licensing and pricing resources. Product components and their availability can also vary by version; consult the applicable SQL Server installation guide before planning a deployment.
