What Matters Most in a Local AI Workstation: GPU Memory, Bandwidth, or Compute?

For local LLM inference, memory capacity is often the first constraint. Once the model and context fit, bandwidth and compute matter differently depending on the workload.

For local large language model (LLM) inference, start with GPU memory capacity: the model, runtime overhead, and context-related KV cache must fit in memory the software can use. Once the workload fits, memory bandwidth often affects token-generation speed; compute becomes especially important for arithmetic-heavy processing and other AI workloads. The right priority depends on your model, precision, context length, speed target, software, and budget.

What each specification tells you

GPU memory capacity: will the workload fit?

Model weights occupy memory, but their file size is not the whole requirement. Inference also needs room for runtime overhead and the KV cache, which stores information used across a conversation. Longer contexts and more simultaneous sessions increase memory needs. If the relevant GPU memory pool is too small, the model may not run at your intended precision and context without a change in configuration.

NVIDIA describes GeForce RTX systems as spanning 6–32 GB of VRAM and RTX PRO systems as spanning 16–96 GB. Those are vendor category descriptions, not minimum requirements or recommendations for a particular model. Check the requirements of the model and inference engine you plan to use.

If the workload does not fit, options include choosing a smaller model, using lower-precision quantization, shortening the context, reducing concurrent sessions, or offloading some work. Each can affect capability, output quality, or speed. Quantization reduces the precision used to represent model parameters and can lower memory needs, but its effect on quality and runtime should be tested with your model and representative prompts. NVIDIA’s sizing guidance recommends validating whether the accuracy trade-off is acceptable for the use case.

Memory bandwidth: how quickly can data be supplied?

Bandwidth describes how quickly data can move between memory and processors. It can be a major factor in interactive, autoregressive generation, where tokens are produced sequentially and model data must be accessed as generation proceeds. But a bandwidth figure alone does not predict tokens per second: architecture, model shape, precision, context, kernels, and software all matter.

Compute: how quickly can arithmetic be processed?

Compute capacity matters for arithmetic-intensive stages and workloads. It may be particularly relevant to processing long prompts and to non-LLM tasks such as image generation, video, or data science. Peak FLOPS or TOPS figures are only meaningful in context: figures measured at different precisions, or with different sparsity assumptions, are not directly comparable measures of application performance.

Memory pools are not interchangeable

A system’s advertised total memory may combine distinct pools with different characteristics. NVIDIA’s DGX Station development guide describes up to 748 GB of coherent system memory as up to 252 GB of GPU HBM3e plus 496 GB of CPU LPDDR5X. It lists up to 7.1 TB/s of GPU-memory bandwidth and up to 396 GB/s of CPU-memory bandwidth. These are specifications for that system and configuration, not a direct comparison between equivalent pools or a forecast for other workstations.

In practice, do not assume that a large total of system RAM or “unified memory” behaves like the same amount of local GPU VRAM. Check which memory the intended model and software can use, and how performance changes if data is placed outside the GPU’s local memory.

Why there is no universal winner

An analytical framework for LLM inference models both hardware compute capacity and memory bandwidth alongside model and software factors. The paper’s validation used AMD CPUs, NPUs, integrated GPUs, NVIDIA V100 GPUs, and Llama 2 7B variants; it is a useful way to think about trade-offs, not a current cross-vendor benchmark of workstation products.

NVIDIA’s inference-sizing guidance also highlights model selection, concurrency, input and output lengths, cache behavior, and latency targets. Its advice to consider FP8 as a starting point is vendor guidance, not a guarantee of zero quality loss for every model or task. A vendor example using INT4 AWQ with Llama 3.1 8B illustrates how quantization can help a model fit available RTX GPU memory and reduce bandwidth bottlenecks; it does not establish what will happen with every model.

A practical order for choosing a workstation

  1. Define the workload. Write down the model, precision, intended context length, number of simultaneous sessions, and whether the goal is inference, fine-tuning, or both.
  2. Check memory fit. Confirm that the relevant GPU memory pool can accommodate weights, KV cache, and runtime overhead. Leave headroom rather than treating the model file size as the total requirement.
  3. Adjust if it does not fit. Consider a smaller model, quantization, shorter context, fewer concurrent sessions, or offloading. Test quality and runtime on representative prompts before relying on a changed precision or configuration.
  4. Compare performance by stage. For output generation, compare bandwidth and matched token-generation results. For long prompt processing, training, or image and video generation, give more attention to compute and benchmarks for the specific application.
  5. Check the whole system. Verify software and architecture compatibility, power and cooling needs, noise, total system cost, and upgrade options. A high peak specification is of little use if the intended model or software stack cannot use it effectively.

How to compare two workstation options fairly

Compare systems using the same model, precision, context, software, and batch or concurrency conditions. Separate prompt processing from output generation where possible: time to first token and prompt throughput describe a different part of the experience from inter-token latency and output tokens per second. NVIDIA’s sizing guidance also calls out tail latency and token patterns as factors in choosing a system.

  • Usable model capacity: memory pool, precision, context, concurrency, and runtime overhead.
  • Prompt processing: time to first token or prompt throughput under comparable conditions.
  • Output generation: inter-token latency or tokens per second under comparable conditions.
  • Other workloads: task-specific results for fine-tuning, image generation, video, or data science.
  • Practical fit: compatible software, power use, physical size, cooling, noise, cost, and upgrade path.

Without a matched workload comparison, there is no source-backed universal ranking that can tell you which system will be fastest for your use.
