They are not alternatives: a Matter accessory may connect over Wi-Fi or Thread. For Apple Home, check the specific accessory’s category, connection type, required hub or border router, and supported features before buying.
What Matter means for Apple Home
Matter is designed to let compatible smart-home accessories work across platforms. Apple says Matter accessories added to Apple Home can be used in the Home app, with Siri, in Control Center, and in third-party HomeKit apps. Apple’s iPhone can provision a Matter accessory to Wi-Fi or Thread, depending on the accessory. Apple’s Matter support overview explains the platform’s setup and use.

Matter support does not mean that every feature a manufacturer advertises will be available in Apple Home. Apple lists supported accessory categories, but category support alone does not confirm every model-specific function.

Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
- [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
- [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
- [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
What Thread means—and how it differs from Matter
Thread is a low-power, Internet Protocol-based mesh networking technology. Thread-enabled accessories can forward packets within the mesh, which Apple says helps improve coverage and adds redundancy. Apple describes Thread in its Apple Developer documentation.
The distinction is practical: Matter describes interoperability between smart-home platforms, while Thread describes one way certain devices communicate over a home network. A Matter logo does not tell you whether the product uses Thread. Matter accessories can use Wi-Fi instead, so check the product’s specifications and setup instructions.

(Some automation, such as cloud push notification, will still require the cloud connection to be executed.)
- Flexible Power & Small Size – Features a universal USB-A port for power and data, allowing connection to power banks, wall outlets, PCs, or routers for a simple and quick setup. The Hub M100's shaft can be adjusted within a 210-degree range, making its placement extremely flexible.
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 for Faster & Security—This product supports a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 wireless network connection, which enables more efficient connections with advanced WPA3 security. Wi-Fi 6 ensures smoother performance even in high-traffic environments, allowing multiple devices to connect without compromising speed or reliability. Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M100 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
Do you need a Thread-enabled hub for Apple Home?
The requirement depends on the accessory and the kind of setup or control you want. Apple’s home-hub support guidance says a hub is required to add Matter accessories to Apple Home and calls for a Thread-enabled hub or supported third-party border router for Thread-enabled Matter accessories. Apple names HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as examples of Thread-enabled hubs; verify that your exact model and software are supported.
Apple’s Matter setup guidance also describes iOS 18 or later iPhone-only pairing and control for Matter generally. It identifies local control of Thread accessories as limited to Thread-enabled iPhone models, including iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max and later, and notes that an accessory firmware update may be needed for Thread local pairing or management. Apple still recommends a home hub for the best experience, and Thread use requires a Thread-enabled hub or compatible border router. Requirements differ by feature and device; check Apple’s current guidance for your iPhone, hub and accessory.

What a Thread border router does
A Thread border router connects or supports a Thread network in the home. For Apple Home, the relevant question is whether your existing home hub is Thread-enabled or whether your accessory’s setup supports a compatible third-party border router. Do not assume that any Apple TV, HomePod or generic Wi-Fi router provides Thread support.
Check compatibility before buying
- Confirm Matter support and category. Check that the product listing identifies Matter and that Apple Home supports its accessory category.
- Identify the transport. Look for whether that exact model uses Wi-Fi or Thread. Matter compatibility alone does not establish Thread support.
- Check the infrastructure requirement. If it uses Thread, confirm that you have a supported Thread-enabled Apple home hub or compatible border router. Check the precise hub model and software requirements.
- Match the feature to your setup. Verify the iOS version and device requirements for pairing, local control, remote access, automations or notifications you intend to use. Apple’s support pages distinguish between these capabilities.
- Review the maker’s setup instructions. Pair through the Home app’s Add Accessory flow, scanning the code or using the offered proximity setup. If the accessory was already paired in another app, check More Options and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Check cross-platform functions. Matter can allow an accessory to be added to another compatible ecosystem, but that ecosystem and the manufacturer must support the relevant device functions.
Adding a Matter accessory already paired elsewhere
Apple says a previously paired Matter accessory may be added from another app that supports Matter, following the accessory maker’s instructions. The pairing keys sync through iCloud Keychain. In the Home app, use Add Accessory and, if the device does not appear in the initial flow, look under More Options. This does not guarantee that every device feature will be exposed in every app.

How to compare two Apple Home accessories
When weighing specific products, compare the details that affect whether they will work in your home—not just the Matter or Thread logo:
- Whether Apple Home supports the product’s category and the exact functions you need.
- Whether it connects over Wi-Fi or Thread.
- Which Apple hub or border router it needs, and whether your existing hardware qualifies.
- Whether local control, remote access, automations and notifications require particular software or a home hub.
- Whether the same accessory can be shared with another Matter-compatible ecosystem, and which features that ecosystem supports.
Those distinctions are product- and setup-specific; Apple’s platform documentation does not provide a model-by-model comparison of retail accessories.
