What Matter 1.6 Adds to Smart Home Device Compatibility

Matter 1.6 adds NFC setup, Joint Fabric, thermostat suggestions and better sensor reporting, but no new device categories. Support depends on your devices and platform.

Matter 1.6, announced by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) on June 17, 2026, is a focused feature release. It improves commissioning, shared administration, thermostat control and device status reporting. It adds no new device categories. Whether any of it helps you depends on whether your devices and your smart home platform have implemented it. The CSA says the path from specification to products varies by company and product type.

What Matter 1.6 changes

The CSA’s announcement describes six additions. Some change how you set devices up. Others change how controllers and devices exchange information.

Full commissioning over NFC

Matter 1.6 allows the entire commissioning exchange to run over NFC, so a device can be set up before it is powered. The CSA’s examples are a bulb and an in-wall switch, both of which can be awkward to power up just for pairing. Earlier NFC support only carried the onboarding payload (the data that identifies the device). Bluetooth Low Energy was still needed to finish commissioning.

Joint Fabric

Joint Fabric lets multiple user-authorized controllers co-administer one shared Matter network. The CSA contrasts it with Enhanced Multi-Admin, which shares a device’s access across separate ecosystem fabrics. According to the announcement:

Aqara Smart Home Hub M3 for Advanced Automation, Matter Controller, IR
  • [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
  • [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
  • [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
  • [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
  • [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
  • It uses a central datastore.
  • Administrators can be added or removed independently of the devices.
  • Participation in a Joint Fabric counts as one fabric toward a device’s fabric capacity.

The CSA points to homes with several platforms, new-construction handovers and professionally managed properties as likely uses.

Thermostat Suggestions

An ecosystem can send a recommended change to a thermostat. The thermostat then weighs it against user preferences and current context before acting. This is recommendation and evaluation, not a guarantee that a thermostat will obey every ecosystem command. It is also not evidence that any existing thermostat already supports it.

What it means for compatibility

Matter is still an interoperability standard on familiar networks. The CSA FAQ names Bluetooth Low Energy for setup and Wi-Fi, Thread and Ethernet for connecting devices. Its supported categories include bridges, controllers, door locks, HVAC controls, lighting and electrical, media devices, safety and security sensors, and window coverings and shades.

Why a Matter logo does not guarantee 1.6 features

The CSA states: “As with all Matter releases, the path from specification to products in users’ hands will vary by company and product type.” A Matter logo, or an older Matter listing, does not show support for any particular 1.6 feature. For a given feature, check four things:

  1. Which Matter version and feature the device implements.
  2. Which controller or ecosystem supports that feature.
  3. Whether a bridge is involved, and what it passes through.
  4. The manufacturer’s firmware and rollout status for the product.

The CSA’s listing of Matter 1.6 and 1.6.1 specification documents confirms the release is available for manufacturers and platforms to build on. The sources reviewed do not say that you need a new hub or controller for Matter 1.6. They also do not include a list of shipping thermostats or platform releases that support Thermostat Suggestions. Manufacturer release notes and platform compatibility pages are the place to confirm that.
