There is no single material that replaces rare earth elements across electric motors and electronics. In motors, engineers can use rare-earth-free magnets such as ferrite or AlNiCo, or change the motor architecture so it needs no permanent magnet. In electronics, the answer depends on the component: magnets, display and lighting phosphors, and semiconductor materials serve different functions and need different alternatives.
Start with the component: what job does the rare earth do?
Rare earth elements are used in several distinct ways. Neodymium, praseodymium and dysprosium can be part of powerful permanent magnets used in motors and other devices. Europium, terbium and yttrium are among the elements used in phosphors for lighting and displays. Semiconductor materials such as gallium and germanium are a separate category: they are critical materials, but they are not rare earth elements. The U.S. Department of Energy’s critical materials overview identifies gallium and germanium in semiconductor applications.

That distinction matters. Silicon carbide (SiC), for example, is discussed in electric-machine research as a power-electronics material; it does not replace a rare-earth permanent magnet. DOE’s overview of next-generation electric machines covers power electronics and motor research as separate parts of the system.

A motor can avoid rare-earth permanent magnets either by using a different magnet material or by using an architecture that produces its magnetic field without permanent magnets. Those are different engineering choices: a rare-earth-free magnet remains a magnet, while an induction or switched-reluctance motor does not depend on permanent-magnet material.

Ferrite and AlNiCo magnets
Ferrite and aluminum-nickel-cobalt (AlNiCo) are established rare-earth-free magnet families. The European Commission’s REFREEPERMAG project documented research into adapting these materials and developing other rare-earth-free magnet families. Its final report supports treating them as real material options, not as universal drop-in replacements for neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets.
For a motor redesign, the relevant question is whether the alternative magnet can deliver the required magnetic performance within the available space, mass, operating conditions, manufacturing process and cost. A weaker or differently behaving magnet may require a larger motor or other changes to the design. The available sources do not establish that ferrite or AlNiCo can replace NdFeB in every traction motor.
Induction motors
An induction motor uses electromagnetic induction rather than a permanent magnet to create rotor currents and torque. It therefore avoids rare-earth permanent magnets. DOE identifies reliability and high starting torque as advantages, while also noting lower power density and overall efficiency compared with interior permanent-magnet (IPM) motors. DOE’s electric-motors research overview describes these tradeoffs.

That comparison is about the motor systems discussed by DOE, not a guarantee that every induction design will be less efficient in every vehicle or duty cycle. Buyers and manufacturers need to compare performance over the intended operating range, along with motor mass, volume and system cost.

Electrically excited synchronous motors
An electrically excited synchronous motor creates its rotor field electrically rather than relying on a permanent magnet. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) identifies electrically excited synchronous machines among rare-earth-free motor alternatives for battery-electric vehicles. The JRC’s assessment of substitution in low-carbon technologies treats this as an alternative motor design, not a direct swap of one magnet material for another.
The design shifts the comparison to matters such as excitation hardware, electrical losses, maintenance and packaging. The JRC assessment identifies the architecture as an option; it does not provide a universal performance or cost result for every vehicle application.
Switched-reluctance motors
Switched-reluctance motors produce torque through the tendency of a rotor to move toward positions of lower magnetic reluctance. They do not need rare-earth permanent magnets. DOE describes them as rugged and potentially inexpensive to manufacture, while identifying noise, vibration, lower efficiency and additional control requirements as challenges for vehicle traction. DOE’s motor research overview discusses both the advantages and drawbacks.

Iron-nitride permanent magnets and nanocrystalline soft-magnet designs are development paths, not evidence that a widely available commercial replacement is already in place. DOE selected a project to design, analyze and fabricate a prototype motor using iron-nitride permanent-magnet material. Its 2024 Critical Materials Accelerator selection page states that the Niron Magnetics project received $2,699,810 in federal funding; proposed performance outcomes are conditional on the project succeeding. The selection page describes the project scope and targets.

A separate DOE project description concerns a rare-earth-free axial-flux motor using nanocrystalline soft magnets. It is evidence of active development, not proof of broad commercial availability. DOE’s project description, dated January 8, 2025, outlines that effort.

Reducing rare-earth use without eliminating it
Not every alternative removes rare earths altogether. DOE identifies grain-boundary diffusion and motor redesign for lower operating temperatures as approaches that can reduce or eliminate the need for dysprosium in NdFeB magnets. The 2023 DOE Critical Materials Assessment describes these strategies. They can reduce the rare-earth intensity of a magnet, but they do not necessarily remove rare earth elements from it.
This distinction is useful when comparing claims: “uses less dysprosium” is not the same as “rare-earth-free,” and neither phrase alone tells you whether the finished motor meets the required performance, temperature and durability targets.

What can replace rare earths in displays, lighting and semiconductors?
There is no single substitute for “rare earths in electronics,” because a magnet, a phosphor and a semiconductor do different jobs. The JRC assessment examined europium, terbium, yttrium, indium, gallium, germanium, neodymium, praseodymium and dysprosium in lighting, wind turbines and electric-vehicle applications. For the assessed phosphors, LEDs and permanent magnets, it reported that a direct, complete commercial replacement for the critical materials was not available at the time of the assessment. The JRC report discusses component substitution and material efficiency as ways to reduce demand.

That finding is scoped to the technologies assessed and the period covered by the report; it is not a timeless claim about every electronic component. In practice, a product may reduce dependence by redesigning a component, using less of a critical material, or choosing a different component technology. Those choices have to be evaluated by function rather than described as one universal “rare-earth-free electronics” material.
Recycling recovers materials; it does not substitute for them
Recycling can return rare earths to supply chains, but it does not make a product independent of those materials. DOE’s electronics-scrap initiatives include work on recovering rare earths from e-scrap and recirculating NdFeB magnets. The agency’s Electronics Scrap Recycling Advancement Prize states an award ceiling of up to $4 million; that is the program’s maximum award, not a measured recycling result. DOE’s prize page describes the program.
The International Energy Agency identifies growing end-of-life volumes from electric-vehicle motors, wind turbines and electronic waste as a recycling opportunity. Its rare earth elements analysis discusses that potential. Collection, separation, recovery quality and economics still determine how much material can be returned in practice.

Choosing the right replacement route
- If the requirement is a compact, high-performance permanent-magnet motor: compare the complete motor and system design before assuming ferrite or AlNiCo can serve as a direct substitute.
- If eliminating rare-earth magnets is the priority: compare induction, electrically excited synchronous and switched-reluctance architectures against the application’s efficiency, size, control and operating requirements.
- If evaluating a newer magnet material: distinguish a funded prototype or project target from a product available at commercial scale.
- If the concern is electronics generally: identify the component first—magnet, phosphor, LED or semiconductor—then evaluate alternatives for that specific function.
- If the goal is lower demand rather than full substitution: consider material efficiency, redesign and recycling, while keeping reduced use distinct from eliminating the material requirement.
