Uranium is part of the natural decay-chain context, but radium and its decay products may be the more relevant contaminants in a particular component. The hazard varies by equipment, deposit and location, so it cannot be judged by appearance alone.
How naturally radioactive material ends up in equipment
Rocks and underground formations naturally contain radionuclides, including uranium, thorium and radium. Industrial processes can bring this material to the surface and concentrate it in waste or equipment; material affected in this way is commonly called technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material, or TENORM. OSHA describes TENORM in oil and gas work, while the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) identifies accumulation in pipes and vessels.

In oil and gas production, uranium and thorium are relatively insoluble in water, but some decay products—particularly radium—can dissolve in formation brines. When produced water reaches the surface and conditions change, radium can remain in the water or coprecipitate with minerals such as barium sulfate, forming scale. Scale, sludge and sediment may build up inside pipes, well tubulars, vessels and other equipment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains these pathways in its oil and gas TENORM overview.

The phrase can suggest that uranium itself is the main contaminant, but a component may contain a mixture of uranium, thorium and radionuclides produced as they decay. In oilfield scale, radium-226 and radium-228—and, in some gas-well scale or equipment, lead-210—can be especially relevant. The radionuclide mix has to be established for the particular material; the industry or appearance of a component is not enough to identify it. EPA discusses radium and lead-210 in oil and gas materials.

How much radioactivity can be present?
Levels vary substantially with regional geology, equipment and the deposit. EPA gives an estimated average radium concentration in oilfield scale of 17.76 Bq/g (480 pCi/g), and reports values as high as 14,800 Bq/g (400,000 pCi/g). These are source-reported figures for scale, not measurements of a specific component, expected exposure doses or regulatory clearance levels. EPA’s figures and discussion do not establish the activity of any particular piece of equipment; that requires measurement and characterization of the material.
How exposure can occur
Potential exposure depends on the radionuclides and amount of material present, where deposits sit, the component’s condition and shielding, the task and time spent near it, and whether contamination can be transferred or become airborne. Radiation may reach a worker from outside the component, including as gamma radiation. Disturbing contaminated deposits can also create dust that may be inhaled or ingested. EPA describes external and internal exposure pathways; OSHA flags scale, sludge and drilling mud as materials that may contain elevated NORM.

What to do if equipment may be contaminated
- Stop routine work on the suspected material. Do not casually open, cut, scrape, blast or otherwise disturb deposits. Such work can spread contamination and create dust and secondary waste.
- Refer the component through the site’s radiation-safety or health-and-safety process. Assessment should be task-specific and handled by competent, appropriately trained personnel using suitable radiation monitoring and the employer’s radiation-protection program.
- Establish the applicable controls before work resumes. The radionuclide profile, activity, deposit location, likelihood of airborne contamination and proposed task all affect the assessment. Exact work methods and controls depend on the characterized hazard and local requirements.
- Confirm handling, transport and disposal requirements with the relevant authorities or qualified site personnel. Requirements differ by jurisdiction and by the activity and type of material. A household detector, visual inspection or generic PPE advice is not a substitute for industrial characterization and regulatory compliance.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) says NORM-contaminated equipment and waste should be handled only by people with appropriate radiation training. HSE guidance says employers must assess relevant NORM work and, where applicable, comply with IRR17; notification or registration depends on risk. UK Environment Agency guidance notes that items such as pumps, process vessels and pipework may fall under radioactive-substance permitting when handled as contaminated waste equipment.
Rules depend on where the work takes place
There is no single worldwide clearance threshold or disposal rule that can be applied without knowing the location and material. In the UK, workplace requirements under IRR17 apply to specified NORM work above relevant levels, and Environment Agency permits may govern radioactive-substance activities. In Canada, provinces and territories regulate NORM handling and disposal, while federal CNSC rules apply to transport, import and export. In the United States, OSHA provides workplace hazard guidance, but state TENORM rules and waste requirements can differ. Consult the applicable regulator framework and qualified site radiation-safety staff before moving, processing or discarding suspected material. HSE guidance, CNSC guidance, EPA’s oil and gas TENORM overview and Environment Agency guidance describe these jurisdiction-specific responsibilities.
