Google Maps can be difficult to replace because it combines live driving updates, place discovery, saved locations, street-level previews and offline navigation in one app. Those features are useful in different situations—and none guarantees that Google Maps is the best choice for every person or region.
This is a feature-based look at what a switch may leave behind, not a personal account of a switch. Availability varies by country, city and platform, and the cited feature descriptions do not establish that another map app matches Google Maps across every category.

Why can Google Maps be hard to replace?
Navigation is only one part of the app. A map service may also help you choose a destination, inspect its surroundings, organize places for later and keep driving when data service drops. If you use those functions together, switching means evaluating a bundle of habits rather than just comparing turn-by-turn directions.

#1 Best Overall
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
Which five features can make switching harder?
1. Live traffic and automatic rerouting
For connected driving, Google describes turn-by-turn navigation that can reroute based on live traffic, incidents and road closures. That can make a difference when conditions change after a trip begins. The benefit depends on having a connection and on relevant traffic information being available for the route; it should not be confused with offline navigation.
2. Place discovery, reviews and photos
Choosing where to go is a different task from getting there. Google’s listing describes place search alongside user reviews, photos, filters and questions about places. Keeping discovery and navigation in one app can be convenient when you are comparing destinations before starting a route. The listing does not establish that every place has complete or current information.

3. Saved places and shareable lists
Google says users can organize favorite places into custom lists and share them. A collection of saved locations can become a practical switching cost: you may need to recreate it or decide how to share it with people who use a different service. The cited listing confirms the list and sharing features, but does not specify that lists transfer between map services.

Street View previews can help you get a sense of an area before you arrive, including the approach to a building, a possible entrance or nearby parking. This is an orientation aid rather than a promise of current, continuous coverage: street-level imagery is not available everywhere, and a preview may not reflect recent changes. Google describes Street View in its app listing.

5. Offline maps—with important limits
Google’s offline maps can support driving navigation and destination searches in downloaded areas. But offline does not mean that every connected feature continues to work: Google says drivers without a connection do not get traffic information or alternative routes. Downloads may also be unavailable in some countries or regions for contractual, language, address-format or other reasons. See Google Maps Help on downloading areas and navigating offline.
Google’s earlier explanation also distinguishes offline directions from live traffic, which returns when the device reconnects. Google’s offline-use overview and its historical offline-navigation announcement describe that connected-versus-offline distinction.

Does another map app work offline?
Apple Support says Apple Maps on iOS 17 and later can provide map information and navigation without Wi-Fi or mobile data. Downloaded maps can be kept current automatically when map details change. That establishes an offline option for supported iPhones; it does not establish that Apple Maps matches Google Maps on live traffic quality, local listings, reviews, saved-list sharing or street-level imagery across regions. “Works offline” is not a complete comparison. Check separately whether you need basic map access, driving directions, traffic, rerouting, destination search or automatic map updates. The available sources do not support a universal winner.

How should you decide whether to switch?
- List the tasks you actually rely on. Separate driving updates from destination research, saved-place organization, street-level previews and offline use.
- Check availability where you travel. Google says some features vary by city or country, and offline downloads may be restricted in some regions. Confirm local coverage and the features available on your device before depending on them.
- Test offline behavior before a trip. Download the area while connected, then check the specific functions you expect to use. For Google Maps, do not plan on live traffic or alternative routes while disconnected.
- Account for your saved places. If shared lists matter, find out whether your intended alternative supports the organization and sharing you need; the cited sources do not establish cross-service list transfer.
- Choose by use case, not by a blanket ranking. A service that meets your offline-navigation needs may still differ in local discovery or imagery. The sources here establish Apple Maps offline capability, not a complete comparison of those other categories.
What the evidence does—and does not—say about Google Maps’ scale
In a March 12, 2026 report on a Google Maps announcement, the Associated Press attributed figures of more than 300 million places and more than 500 million contributors to Google Maps. These are figures reported by AP, not independently audited counts; the contributor figure should not be read as a count of unique active users. Associated Press report
Google’s product overview also describes recommendations and immersive navigation, with at least one feature marked as available only in the United States and India. Rollouts can change, so check the current Google Maps product overview for location-specific availability rather than assuming a feature is universal.
