Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA Soulslike is not simply a difficult action RPG. The label usually describes games where deliberate, learnable combat, exploratory world design, and meaningful consequences for failure work together. Stamina, bosses, checkpoints, dropped currency, and environmental storytelling are common features, but none is required in every game.
What makes a game a Soulslike?
There is no universally accepted checklist that determines whether a game qualifies. “Soulslike” is better understood as a family resemblance: games share several design patterns, but individual titles can omit or reshape familiar features. A 2024 scholarly review discusses the recurring mechanics and notes that some scholarship treats Souls as an aesthetic category rather than a conventional genre: The Soulsification of video games.

The useful test is how the game connects challenge to learning. Players are expected to watch, understand what happened, adjust their approach, and make progress. Hidetaka Miyazaki has described FromSoftware’s intent as encouraging players to study the game and learn from mistakes—not to make difficulty feel like unfair punishment. His comments on that design goal are discussed in this Game Informer interview published June 24, 2024.

Combat commonly rewards deliberate choices over continuous attacking. Players read enemy movements, decide when to strike or defend, and manage stamina or another limited resource. Dodging, blocking, parrying, positioning, and choosing when to commit to an attack can matter as much as character strength.

In a PlayStation Blog feature on Steelrising’s combat, the developers emphasize timing, studying opponents, avoiding being surrounded, and identifying weaknesses. Aggressive play also builds heat in that game, which can temporarily incapacitate the player. Those mechanics illustrate a common principle: an attack can carry a cost, so players must weigh pressure against risk.
Why bosses are about learning patterns
A demanding enemy is not just a test of reflexes. Its attacks can teach the player to recognize a cue, change timing or position, and try a different response. Miyazaki described the desired feedback loop this way: “When players are killed, and they can understand why they were killed in an instance, and it feels justified – ‘Okay, yeah, that makes sense’ – that’s the game design we’re trying to achieve.” The quote comes from the June 24, 2024 Game Informer interview.

How does exploration shape the experience?
Soulslike worlds often reward attention to routes, shortcuts, hidden areas, and environmental clues. Rather than explain every place and event directly, a game may leave players to infer its history and rules from what they encounter. The 2024 scholarly review identifies interconnected level design and environmental or contextual storytelling among recurring features.

In the same Game Informer interview, Miyazaki explained: “So, the map and level design are supposed to serve as this guide in a way to help players pick up more information and piece together what they think that world is.” Discovery can therefore involve interpreting the layout as well as finding a route through it.

Soulslike does not mean open world
An open world is one way to let players explore and return to challenges at their own pace, as Miyazaki discussed when describing Elden Ring in this PlayStation Blog interview. But the discovery loop also works in more tightly structured, interconnected spaces. Open-world design is an option, not a genre requirement.
Is every difficult action RPG a Soulslike?
No. Difficulty by itself is a weak test. A game may be hard because it demands quick reactions or punishes mistakes, yet lack the combination of deliberate combat, exploratory discovery, and learnable failure associated with Soulslikes. The more telling question is whether players can understand what went wrong and use that information to adapt.

Miyazaki has said the goal is not to make a game hard for its own sake, but to create adversity players can overcome and encounters that feel fair enough to learn from. Accessibility options do not automatically disqualify a game either: Steelrising’s developers describe its assist mode as a way for more players to engage while preserving the combat focus, according to the PlayStation Blog feature.
Are stamina, checkpoints, and dropped currency required?
No single mechanic is mandatory. Stamina limits, death-related currency loss, checkpoint systems, bosses, interconnected spaces, and environmental storytelling are recurring reference points—not a contract every game must satisfy. The 2024 review lists several of these conventions, but the label remains flexible.

Sekiro shows why a checklist can mislead. It has challenging bosses, skill-based third-person combat, and exploration, but Game Informer notes that it lacks some RPG elements such as custom characters and robust stat upgrades. Developers also adapt the formula in different directions; Game Informer’s discussion of Soulslikes points to the lighter tone and variations of Another Crab’s Treasure.

When deciding how closely a particular game fits the label—or whether its style will suit you—compare the design across these dimensions rather than counting specific mechanics.
| Dimension | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Combat rhythm | How much does success depend on timing, stamina or resource management, blocking, dodging, parrying, and choosing when to attack? Steelrising’s developer feature discusses studying moves, timing, and aggression: PlayStation Blog. |
| Failure and recovery | What happens after death, and can you identify what to change on the next attempt? The review discusses common death consequences; Miyazaki describes fair, understandable failure in his Game Informer interview. |
| World structure | Are areas interconnected, open, or divided into regions? How much route-finding and optional discovery does the game invite? Miyazaki discusses exploration and open-world freedom in a PlayStation Blog interview. |
| Progression and builds | How much do stats, equipment, and build choices change your approach to combat? The Steelrising feature covers upgrades, while an Xbox Wire Sands of Aura feature describes reactive combat and buildcrafting. |
| Access and assistance | Can summons, assist settings, targeting aids, or other options reduce friction while preserving the central combat challenge? Steelrising’s assist mode is discussed in its developer feature; Miyazaki discusses the freedom to explore and return to challenges in the Elden Ring interview. |
Sands of Aura illustrates how these dimensions can vary within the family. Its developer feature describes reactive combat, buildcrafting, travel across a sandsea, and a compass intended to help players stay oriented without replacing discovery with a full minimap. John Sadler, a programmer at Chashu Entertainment, said: “We wanted to give players enormous flexibility to create wildly different, deeply customizable builds that synergize in unexpected and sometimes absurdly powerful ways.” The feature was published by Xbox Wire on February 27, 2026.
