In the hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) most people mean, the vehicle stores hydrogen and takes oxygen from the air. The vehicle’s fuel-cell system produces water and heat, but its tailpipe output alone does not reveal the climate impact of making and delivering its hydrogen.
What makes a vehicle a fuel-cell vehicle?
The defining feature is how it makes electricity: a fuel cell converts the chemical energy of a fuel and an oxidant into electrical energy through electrochemical reactions. That electricity drives an electric motor, which turns the wheels. The U.S. Department of Energy describes FCEVs as using electricity to power an electric motor, like all-electric vehicles do: DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center.

Fuel-cell vehicles are not limited by definition to road cars; the term can cover other vehicles that use this kind of electric propulsion. In everyday discussion, however, it usually refers to hydrogen FCEVs.
How does a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle work?
The common vehicle fuel-cell type is a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell. Hydrogen enters the anode side of the fuel-cell stack, while oxygen from outside air enters the cathode side. A catalyst separates hydrogen into protons and electrons. The electrons travel through an external circuit, creating electric current that can power the traction motor; the protons pass through a membrane. At the cathode, protons, electrons, and oxygen combine to form water and heat. DOE’s FCEV explanation describes this process.

- The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
What the main components do
- Hydrogen tank: stores the vehicle’s onboard fuel.
- Fuel-cell stack: converts hydrogen and oxygen into electricity through electrochemical reactions.
- High-voltage battery: commonly captures energy from regenerative braking, supplies extra power during short acceleration demands, and helps smooth the fuel cell’s output.
- Power electronics and electric motor: manage and use electrical power to propel the vehicle.
- Cooling system and electric transmission: support operation and deliver motor output to the wheels.
The battery is a supporting part of the electric drive system; its presence does not make the vehicle a battery-only EV. See the DOE component overview.
How is a fuel-cell vehicle different from a battery EV?
Both fuel-cell electric vehicles and battery-electric vehicles propel themselves with electric motors. The key difference is where the vehicle gets its electricity during use: a hydrogen FCEV generates it onboard from hydrogen and oxygen, while a battery EV draws it from electricity stored in a rechargeable traction battery. An internal-combustion vehicle instead burns fuel in an engine to produce mechanical power.

| Vehicle type | How it propels itself | Onboard energy carrier | How energy is replenished | Vehicle-level output during driving |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle | Electric motor powered by electricity generated onboard by a fuel cell | Hydrogen, commonly with a supporting battery | Hydrogen refueling | Water and heat from fuel-cell conversion |
| Battery-electric vehicle | Electric motor powered by electricity stored in a battery | Electricity stored in a traction battery | Recharge from an external electrical supply | No combustion tailpipe emissions during electric driving |
| Internal-combustion vehicle | Engine burns fuel to create mechanical power | Liquid or gaseous combustible fuel | Refuel with combustible fuel | Combustion exhaust |
This is a conceptual comparison, not a model-by-model efficiency or lifecycle-emissions ranking. Upstream emissions vary with how hydrogen is produced and delivered, how electricity is generated, battery supply chains, and fuel production and delivery. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that some hydrogen production pathways, including those involving natural gas, can have greenhouse-gas emissions, while electricity from non-emitting sources can enable hydrogen production without upstream greenhouse-gas emissions: EPA’s hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle overview.

What comes out of a hydrogen fuel-cell car?
At the vehicle, the fuel-cell conversion produces water and heat. That is a tailpipe-level description, not proof that the hydrogen itself was produced without emissions. Its full climate impact depends in part on the energy and process used to make hydrogen and on how it is delivered. EPA discusses that upstream distinction in its hydrogen vehicle overview.

What do range and refueling figures mean?
The DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center gives general overview figures of about five minutes to refuel and more than 300 miles of range. The page does not state a publication year for those figures, and they are not guarantees for every model or market. Actual range and refueling experience depend on the vehicle and conditions; these broad figures should not be treated as a current, universal specification. See the DOE AFDC overview.

A fuel-cell vehicle is an electrically propelled vehicle whose onboard fuel cell generates electricity from fuel and an oxidant. In the common hydrogen FCEV, hydrogen is the fuel, oxygen comes from air, and an electric motor drives the vehicle. A supporting battery may store recovered braking energy and provide additional power.
