Puzzles alone do not make a game a Metroidvania; the defining idea is how puzzle-solving connects to access and exploration.
What makes a puzzle game a Metroidvania?
There is no formal genre standard or universal checklist. The label is best understood as a cluster of recurring design conventions: an interconnected world, routes gated by abilities or knowledge, and exploration that changes as the player gains new options. Bandai Namco’s developer roundtable and Phi Dinh’s account of designing Recompile describe versions of that pattern (Bandai Namco Entertainment America; Game Developer).

Koji Igarashi described the structure as “exploration through the use of a gradually-expanding toolset — players explore and then double back once they learn to reach an area they couldn’t before” (Game Developer). For a puzzle game, that toolset can include puzzle-solving knowledge as well as physical abilities or items.
How progression connects puzzles to exploration
The important distinction is whether solving a puzzle changes where the player can go or what they can do in the wider world. A useful progression loop looks like this:
#1 Best Overall
- Unlike other games, my indie game provides a unique gameplay experience.
- challenge deadly obstacles like lasers, blades, rotating blades, rockets, spikes, cannons, arrows, shrunken, etc.
- hard game in the world, inspired by classic games, retro games, metroidvania , old games of the 80s and 90s era.
- boys free games and free games for adults.
- fast-paced and nonlinear gameplay.
- Explore: Move through connected spaces and discover a route, mechanism, or barrier.
- Recognize the gate: Encounter a passage that cannot yet be crossed, perhaps because it needs a tool, ability, key, or insight.
- Gain a new option: Find an upgrade or learn how a system works.
- Apply it: Use that capability to open a route, alter an environmental system, or solve a puzzle that changes access.
- Revisit with purpose: Return to a known location and discover a passage or choice that was unavailable before.
An upgrade that only improves strength or awards points can support character progression, but it does not by itself create this exploration-and-return structure. The new capability matters most when it changes access across the map.
What role do puzzles play?
Puzzles can serve several functions within a Metroidvania-like design. They may directly block a route, teach the player how to use a new ability, change the state of the environment, or offer different ways through a connected area. In Recompile, designer Phi Dinh described puzzles and hacking as distinct playstyles within an interconnected world shaped by ability-gated paths (Game Developer).

This means a puzzle need not be a locked door with a single correct answer. It can be a system whose solution changes which paths are available. The key question is whether the puzzle participates in the larger pattern of discovery, access, and revisitation.

A game can be an excellent puzzle adventure without using a Metroidvania structure. If each room is isolated, solved once, and followed by a one-way move to the next room, the puzzles may not affect access elsewhere. That format lacks the interconnected gating and productive revisitation emphasized in accounts of the genre, though genre boundaries remain judgment calls rather than settled rules.

Likewise, a large map alone is not enough. If discoveries do not change where the player can go, and returning to earlier spaces brings no new information or options, the experience may offer exploration without the characteristic ability-gated progression.
How to judge the quality of the exploration loop
When comparing puzzle-oriented Metroidvanias, focus on how well the game makes its world and progression work together:

- Map connections: Do areas connect in ways that make a discovery in one place relevant somewhere else?
- Gate design: Are barriers opened by abilities, items, puzzle knowledge, or a meaningful combination?
- Value of revisits: Does returning reveal new choices, or does it amount to repeated travel without new information?
- Clarity of clues: Can players recognize a blocked route and remember where it is? There is no single required signaling method.
- Travel and risk: How do movement pace, difficulty, and save-point placement affect the cost of exploring and backtracking?
- Motivation: Does discovery itself encourage players to investigate, even when the next route is uncertain?
These factors shape the feel of exploration, but no one of them is a pass-or-fail genre test. Developers discussing the genre have highlighted exploration, movement tempo, save points, and player motivation as parts of the experience, not as a fixed formula (Bandai Namco Entertainment America; PLAYISM).

“Metroidvania” is a practical label for overlapping conventions, not a specification with a minimum number of gates or a required amount of backtracking. Igarashi recalled that “the Metroidvania name stuck and it became a staple video game genre” in a PLAYISM roundtable with developers (PLAYISM). Individual games can emphasize different parts of the pattern: one may focus on ability upgrades, another on puzzle knowledge or environmental changes.

For a puzzle game, the clearest test is therefore structural: do puzzles and discoveries make a connected world progressively more accessible? If so, the Metroidvania description may fit, even if the game differs from familiar action-focused examples.
