A planet is considered potentially habitable when its conditions could let life persist—not simply because it sits in the “Goldilocks zone.” For life as we know it, liquid water, an energy source, nutrients, and a sufficiently stable environment matter. A planet orbiting a white dwarf could, in principle, meet those conditions, but no life-bearing white dwarf planet has been demonstrated.
What does “habitable” mean?
In astrobiology, “habitable” describes conditions that may permit life; it does not mean a world is inhabited, Earth-like, or proven safe for complex organisms. NASA’s Science materials frame the conventional habitable zone as the range around a star where a planet’s surface could allow liquid water. The range varies with the star’s properties, so it is not one fixed distance for every system.

NASA’s Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence and Exoplanet Exploration Center (SEEC) describes liquid water, energy, and nutrients as requirements for life as we know it, and a habitable planet as one capable of sustaining life for a significant period. These are useful starting conditions, not a recipe that guarantees life. A world might have the right average temperature yet lack water, an atmosphere, or long-term environmental stability.

NASA educational material discusses Europa and Enceladus as worlds of interest because environments beneath icy surfaces may be possible beyond the conventional surface-water zone. A planet’s surface and its subsurface environments are different questions, and evidence for one does not establish the other.

Why isn’t being in the habitable zone enough?
The zone is a first filter based on whether surface temperatures could permit liquid water. It does not show that a planet actually has water or an atmosphere, or that either can persist. NASA notes that X-ray and ultraviolet activity from a star can erode a planet’s atmosphere; a world may therefore be in a nominally suitable temperature range but still be warm and airless.

Could the habitable zone for complex life be narrower?
Possibly, depending on what kind of life and what environmental limits are assumed. A 2019 modeling study by Schwieterman and colleagues examined how carbon-dioxide tolerance could constrain the zone for complex aerobic life around a Sun-like star. The modeled zone was a fraction of the conventional habitable-zone width:

These are model results under the study’s assumptions, not measured boundaries for all planets or all forms of life. They illustrate why “habitable for microbes” and “suitable for complex aerobic life” should not be treated as interchangeable claims.

What changes when a star becomes a white dwarf?
A white dwarf is the dense remnant left after a star passes through its red giant phase and sheds its outer layers. It no longer generates energy by fusion, but remains hot and cools over time, as NASA explains. The transformation can remove or disrupt inner planets, while more distant worlds may survive; later changes in planetary orbits are also possible.

That history makes “could life survive?” more than a question about where a planet orbits today. The planet must have, or later acquire, suitable conditions after a dramatic change in its star and system. A surviving planet is evidence that a world persisted, not that it retained a habitable surface through the transition.
Have astronomers found a habitable planet—or life—around a white dwarf?
No evidence cited here establishes life on a white dwarf planet. NASA has reported debris around white dwarfs and a 2015 discovery of a minor planet transiting a white dwarf. In 2020, a paper in Nature reported a giant-planet candidate transiting WD 1856+534 every 1.4 days. The paper discusses how close planets may be engulfed during the red giant phase while more distant planets may survive.

NASA has also described a planet that survived its host star’s evolution: in the scenario reported, it was on a wide orbit during the red giant phase and migrated closer later. This is evidence that planetary systems can persist through stellar death. Neither a surviving planet, a transit, nor debris demonstrates that a planet has liquid water, a stable surface environment, or life.

How might Webb study planets around white dwarfs?
In January 2023, NASA reported a proposed method using the James Webb Space Telescope’s Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) to find and study planets around nearby white dwarfs. It builds on the infrared-excess method, which looks for a planet’s contribution to the light observed from a system. The figures reported by NASA were projections from the study, not completed detections or guaranteed observing performance:

NASA described nearby white dwarf systems as a promising target for Webb biosignature searches. That is a research opportunity, not a report of a detected biosignature or life. Even if a planet is detected and its atmosphere studied, evidence of habitability and evidence of life would remain separate steps.
What evidence would support a habitability claim?
To judge a candidate world, separate what has been observed from what is inferred. A planet’s orbit can show where it travels, but not by itself whether it has liquid water. An atmosphere measurement can narrow the possibilities, but it does not alone prove that an environment is habitable. A proposed biosignature would need careful interpretation before it could be treated as evidence of life.
