A near-Earth asteroid is a plausible mining target only if a mission can reach it, useful material is credibly present and extractable, and the recovered material can be delivered to a real destination at a competitive cost. Being close to Earth or rich in a suspected resource is not enough: neither fact alone proves a mine would work or pay.
What does “viable mining target” mean?
Viability is a chain of requirements, not a single asteroid property. A candidate has to be accessible to the specific mission, contain a resource with enough evidence behind it, permit safe and practical operations, and serve a customer or use at a destination. A failure at any link can make an apparently attractive target impractical.

“Near-Earth” describes an asteroid’s orbit relative to Earth; it does not guarantee an easy transfer, a suitable surface, or commercial value. Likewise, a composition estimate is not the same as a mineable reserve: the resource must be located, recovered, processed, and delivered in a useful form.

1. Calculate accessibility for the actual mission
Assess the orbit in the context of the intended spacecraft and mission plan, including transfer and return requirements, orbital shape, and inclination. NASA’s explanation of OSIRIS-REx target selection describes accessible sample-return targets as having fairly circular, Earth-like orbits with low inclination. Bennu’s orbit ranges from 0.9 to 1.4 AU, and its inclination is 6° different from Earth’s. Those figures explain why Bennu suited that mission; they are not universal thresholds for commercial mining. See NASA’s 2016 OSIRIS-REx press kit.

2. Grade the evidence for the resource
Separate indirect inference from measurements made near the asteroid and from laboratory analysis of returned material. Record what each observation actually measures, its uncertainty, and whether it applies to a small sampled area or the whole body. For example, NASA estimates that metal may make up 30% to 60% of Psyche’s volume based on indirect observations. That is an estimated volume fraction—not an assay of metal purity, proof of an accessible ore body, or a mineable-reserve estimate. NASA also notes contradictions in the data and differences across Psyche’s surface. The agency explains the estimate in its Psyche science overview.
3. Match the material to a destination and use
Ask what the material would be used for, where it would be used, and what form it must be in. Water could potentially support needs in space, but its value depends on whether it can be extracted and delivered where it is needed. A possible use is not evidence of a committed buyer or an established market.

4. Check the surface and the extraction method
Reconnaissance needs to address terrain, boulders, material cohesion, gravity, anchoring, temperature, and whether a chosen collection or processing method could operate under those conditions. Bennu offers a caution: a March 17, 2026 NASA report describes its surface as rugged and boulder-covered, with fewer smooth areas than earlier Earth-based observations suggested. That mismatch shows why remote expectations need to be tested against close-up observations. See NASA’s report on Bennu’s rugged surface.

A credible economic assessment would include prospecting, extraction, processing, transport, and storage, then compare the delivered material with the alternative cost of supplying the same destination from elsewhere. A resource that exists but cannot be recovered or delivered at a useful cost does not make a viable mine. NASA’s mission materials discussed here do not establish a validated commercial cost model or profitability for a specific target.

What different levels of evidence can—and cannot—show
Knowledge grows through distinct stages: a flyby, remote sensing, rendezvous and mapping, contact, returned samples, and ultimately repeatable extraction. Each stage can reduce uncertainty, but none should be treated as proof of the next. Remote observations can suggest composition; close-up mapping can reveal local variation and hazards; a sample can establish properties of the material collected. A sample alone cannot show that the same material is widespread, accessible, or economical to extract across the asteroid.
OSIRIS-REx returned 121.6 grams of Bennu material to Earth on September 24, 2023. That sample provides direct evidence about the collected material and enables laboratory study, not a reserve estimate for all of Bennu. NASA records the return in its OSIRIS-REx FAQ.

What Bennu and Psyche show about target selection
| Asteroid | Why it is relevant | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Bennu | It was selected for the OSIRIS-REx sample-return mission in part because its orbit was accessible for that mission; the spacecraft returned a sample in 2023. NASA’s 2016 press kit gives the selection context, and the mission FAQ documents the sample return. | Scientific target selection and a returned sample do not prove that Bennu is a commercial mining target or that its surface allows practical extraction. |
| Psyche | It illustrates uncertainty in interpreting a metal-rich asteroid from indirect observations. NASA describes it as likely a mixture of rock and metal, with metal estimated at 30% to 60% of its volume. See NASA’s Psyche science material. | Psyche is a main-belt asteroid, not a near-Earth candidate. Its estimated composition is not a close-up assay or proof of mineable reserves. NASA’s mission is for scientific study, not mining. |
Psyche’s mission is a science mission
NASA’s Psyche spacecraft launched on October 13, 2023. The agency’s mission overview lists an August 2029 arrival as a planned milestone, followed by about two years of orbital study to map and assess the asteroid’s composition; schedules can change. The mission is intended to characterize Psyche, not extract its resources. See the NASA Psyche mission overview and NASA/JPL’s Psyche science page.
Is asteroid mining economically viable now?
The NASA sources cited here establish scientific goals and exploration evidence, but they do not demonstrate a profitable commercial asteroid mine, a verified buyer, a delivered price, or a return on investment for a particular target. Treat claims of commercial viability accordingly unless they are supported by a specific, transparent cost and revenue case.
Water is one proposed early-use resource. In a NASA podcast, OSIRIS-REx principal investigator Dante Lauretta said, “the commodity that we feel is the most viable right now from an economic perspective is kind of surprising, but it’s actually water.” This is Lauretta’s team assessment in that interview, not proof of a functioning market or established profitability. Listen to the NASA interview.
