They often appear together because a terminal app commonly starts a shell, but they are separate programs with different jobs. Bash is a shell, not a terminal.
Terminal emulator vs. shell: the short version
A terminal emulator presents a terminal-like interface. It displays text, sends your keystrokes to a program, and handles terminal behavior that programs rely on. A shell is a command interpreter: it reads command lines, interprets their syntax, and runs commands or programs.

GNOME describes a terminal emulator as software that emulates a video terminal and gives interactive access to command-line applications. It describes a shell as a program for invoking commands or other programs inside a terminal. GNOME Terminal overview.
Think of the emulator as the interaction surface and the shell as the command-language program using it. The comparison is not exact: the emulator does more than draw a window, because it also emulates terminal behavior and communicates terminal control information.

In short, if you are asking what interprets echo "$HOME" or a pipeline, that is the shell. If you are asking what displays the text and passes your keystrokes along, that is the terminal emulator. The familiar prompt appears inside the emulator, but it is produced by the shell.
What happens when you open a terminal?
A desktop terminal application commonly launches a shell, which is why the two can seem like one thing. GNOME Terminal is documented as a way to access a UNIX shell environment, and its help includes settings for custom commands and shells. The xterm manual also describes launching a shell program, including how one is selected if you do not specify it. GNOME Terminal help; xterm manual.
- The emulator opens. It creates the terminal interface and starts the configured program—often a shell.
- The shell presents a prompt. The prompt is a readiness cue from the shell, not the terminal emulator itself. GNOME Terminal overview.
- You type a command. The emulator sends your keystrokes to the shell.
- The shell interprets the line. It parses the command according to its own rules, runs a built-in operation itself or launches another program, and may connect programs or redirect their input and output.
- Output returns through the terminal interface. The emulator displays the text and responds to terminal control sequences, such as instructions affecting cursor position or color.
This division is why shell syntax belongs to the shell, while display and terminal-interaction behavior belong to the emulator. Canonical’s Ubuntu documentation describes the historical roles of terminals and shells, including terminals sending keystrokes and displaying text while shells coordinate command execution and data flow. Ubuntu: A brief history of the command line.
For example, a shell can interpret a pipeline and arrange for one command’s output to become another command’s input. It can also redirect input or output. Those are command-language and command-execution tasks, not features of the terminal window. The emulator is still involved in the interactive session: it carries input and presents the resulting text or terminal behavior. Some shell commands, called built-ins, are handled by the shell itself; other commands cause it to launch a separate program.
What does the shell do?
The shell is the program responsible for understanding a command line. GNU’s Bash Reference Manual calls a shell “both a command interpreter and a programming language.” Its responsibilities include command execution, built-ins, redirection, variables, flow control, functions, job control, command-line editing, history, and aliases. For example, when you use quoting, a pipeline, or a variable expansion, the shell applies its language rules before a program receives its arguments or input. A program such as a text editor or file-listing utility is not the shell; it is a command the shell may launch. Some commands are built into the shell itself, so they do not need a separate executable in the same way.
Because a shell is also a programming language, it can do more than respond to one typed command at a time. Shell scripts combine commands with variables, functions, and flow control to automate tasks. A script can be read from a file or a string, and a shell can run in either interactive or non-interactive use. In non-interactive use, there may be no visible prompt or graphical terminal window at all.

Their command syntax and interactive features can differ, so changing shells may affect scripts, configuration, and habits. It does not replace the terminal application. If you are choosing a shell, relevant questions include whether your existing scripts expect a particular language, which interactive features you want, and whether you are prepared to adapt your configuration.
What does the terminal emulator do?
The emulator provides the terminal environment that command-line programs can use. It displays text, passes keyboard input to the running program, and supports terminal control sequences and capabilities. GNOME Terminal documentation describes escape sequences that can control cursor position and colors. GNOME Terminal overview.
Programs can depend on terminal behavior to display interactive interfaces correctly. The xterm manual documents its VT terminal emulations and TERM settings, which help programs identify terminal capabilities. An emulator that differs in supported behavior may affect how a command-line program renders or responds, even though it does not change the shell’s command language. xterm manual.

This is why calling an emulator “just a window” misses part of its job. A program running in the session can send control sequences that affect how text is presented, such as changing cursor position or color. The emulator needs to handle the terminal behavior and capabilities expected by that program. Differences may matter to interactive command-line software, but they do not make one shell’s quoting or variable rules into another shell’s rules.

A terminal emulator can provide access to command-line applications on the same computer or to a remote machine through a protocol such as SSH. In a remote session, the interface is local, but commands are handled by programs on the remote system. GNOME Terminal overview.
Is Bash a terminal? Does a terminal run the shell?
Bash is a shell, not a terminal emulator. A terminal application commonly runs a shell when it opens, but it can also start a different program. The xterm manual, for example, documents an optional shell program rather than requiring that every terminal session run one. xterm manual.
A shell also does not require a graphical terminal window. It can run non-interactively, such as when it reads commands from a script file or a string. GNU’s Bash documentation covers both interactive and non-interactive use. GNU Bash Reference Manual.
So the answer to “Does a terminal run the shell?” is usually yes in the everyday desktop sense: opening a terminal commonly starts a configured shell. But that is a common arrangement, not a definition. The terminal emulator can start another program, and a shell can execute without a graphical terminal app.

How the related terms fit together
- Terminal emulator: Software that emulates a terminal interface and connects users to command-line programs.
- Shell: A command interpreter and, in shells such as Bash, a programming language for combining and automating commands.
- Command line or CLI: A text-based way to interact with programs. A shell prompt is one familiar command-line interface; CLI is not the name of a specific shell or terminal app.
- Prompt: The shell’s visible signal that it is ready to accept a command.
- Terminal capabilities: Behaviors and control sequences that programs may rely on for text display and interaction.
These terms describe related but different parts of the experience. The command line is the text-based interaction style; the shell is one program that accepts and interprets commands in that style; the emulator supplies a terminal-like interface in which a shell or other program can run. A prompt is one visible sign that an interactive shell is ready.
Can you change the terminal without changing the shell?
Yes. Choosing another terminal emulator changes the interface program, not the shell language. A new emulator may have different workflow or presentation features—such as tabs, profiles, appearance controls, and text handling—or different terminal emulation and control-sequence compatibility. GNOME documents interface and text-handling features, while xterm documents emulation and capability details. Those differences are reasons to compare emulators, not proof that one is universally better. GNOME Terminal help; xterm manual.
Likewise, you can change the shell used by a terminal without replacing the terminal application. Before changing shells, consider whether your scripts and configuration expect a particular command language, and whether you rely on specific interactive features. Shell compatibility and terminal workflow are separate decisions.
If you are comparing terminal emulators, focus on the features that match your use: interface and workflow options such as tabs or profiles, text handling and appearance, terminal emulation and control-sequence compatibility, and any remote-session needs. If you are comparing shells, focus instead on command-language compatibility, interactive features, and your existing scripts and configuration. Changing one category does not automatically change the other.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “The terminal and shell are the same thing.” They often appear together, but the emulator provides the terminal interface and the shell interprets commands.
- “The emulator is just a window.” It also emulates terminal behavior and handles communication that interactive programs rely on.
- “Every Linux desktop uses Bash by default.” Bash is common, but defaults vary by distribution and user configuration; the available sources do not establish a universal default.
- “A terminal session always runs commands locally.” A terminal interface can connect to remote programs, including through SSH.
- “Changing terminal apps changes command syntax.” The emulator and shell are separate choices. Shell syntax is determined by the shell you run, not by the terminal app’s tabs or appearance settings.
A quick way to remember the distinction
If the question is about quotes, variables, pipelines, scripts, or shell prompts, it is probably about the shell. If it is about the terminal window, tabs, text display, keyboard input, or terminal control behavior, it is probably about the emulator. The two work together in a typical desktop session, but neither term is a synonym for the other.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bash a terminal emulator?
No. Bash is a shell: it interprets commands and provides shell-language features. A terminal emulator supplies the terminal-like interface in which Bash commonly runs.
Does opening a terminal always start a shell?
A desktop terminal commonly starts a configured shell, but it can start another program. Likewise, a shell can run non-interactively from commands in a file or string without a graphical terminal window.
Can I change my terminal emulator without changing Bash?
Yes. You can use a different terminal emulator while keeping the same shell. Compare interface and workflow features, terminal emulation and capability compatibility, and remote-session needs separately from shell syntax and features.
Recommended Free Tools
Does a terminal emulator interpret commands?
The shell interprets shell syntax, handles built-ins, and launches programs. The emulator passes input and presents output while handling terminal behavior that programs may use.
Does a terminal mean commands run on my computer?
Not necessarily. A terminal emulator can provide access to local programs or to a remote system through a protocol such as SSH. In a remote session, the interface may be local while commands run remotely.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The terminal emulator presents and manages the terminal-like interaction; the shell interprets commands and runs programs. They commonly launch together, but you can change one without changing the other.
