Before choosing one, check what it indexes, how precisely you can narrow results, and whether its search works across the places where you keep information. Obsidian, Raindrop.io, and Apple Notes document different strengths, but their feature descriptions are not a head-to-head measure of speed or accuracy.
Start with what you need to find
List the kinds of items you expect to retrieve: authored notes, saved links, web-page text, PDFs, or other attachments. Then check whether a tool searches each item’s title or filename, its contents, its URL, or some combination. A product can be good at searching notes without indexing linked pages, or good at finding bookmarks without searching every file in a notes library.

Search documentation establishes what a product says it indexes and which controls it offers. It does not establish comparative ranking relevance, recall, speed, privacy, or reliability. Treat advertised capabilities as a shortlist, then try them against your own archive.
Check what the search index includes
Notes and canvases
Obsidian’s official Search guide says it searches the contents of notes and canvases. It is a notes-first example: the guide describes searching material in an Obsidian vault, not automatically searching every external bookmark service. It also documents search operators and sorting, which can help when a broad query returns too much.

Bookmarks and saved-page content
Raindrop.io’s help documentation says you can find bookmarks by name, URL, or content, then narrow results by filters such as type, date, and tag. Its FAQ says it extracts titles, descriptions, thumbnails, and content types, and that full text from web pages and PDF, EPUB, TXT, and Markdown files is searchable. Confirm that the file formats and page content you save are covered; extraction is a product feature claim, not a guarantee that every page or file will yield useful text.
Notes and attachments
Apple’s Mac guide says Notes search can include note text, attachment filenames, and text in attached files such as Pages documents and PDFs. Locked notes expose only title text in results. Search can be scoped to one note, one account, or all accounts. The cited guidance is for Mac, so do not assume identical behavior across every Apple platform or attachment type.

Compare the controls that make results usable
Finding a matching item is only part of retrieval: useful controls reduce the effort of separating the right result from near-matches. Compare the options that matter for your searches:

- Term logic and exclusions: Can you require all terms, match any term, or exclude a word?
- Metadata and location: Can you search by tag, file path, type, date, or a partial URL?
- Result context and ordering: Can you sort results and see enough surrounding text to recognize the match?
- Search scope: Can you choose one note or collection, one account, or the whole library?
Obsidian documents exact-phrase queries, all-terms and OR matching, exclusions, file, path, content, and tag operators, regular expressions, sorting, and options to show more context. Its guide notes that excluded files do not appear in results and that block search can take longer because it parses Markdown in every file.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Raindrop.io documents filters including type, date, and tag. Apple Notes’ Mac guide describes scope choices across a note, account, or all accounts. These controls address different jobs; the presence of a filter does not by itself show how well a tool ranks results.
Choose a tool for the shape of your archive
| Archive you mainly search | Documented example | What to verify for your use |
|---|---|---|
| Authored notes and canvases | Obsidian’s guide covers note and canvas contents, query operators, and sorting. | Whether your notes are in the vault being searched and whether its operators fit your queries. |
| Saved links and linked-page text | Raindrop.io documents searching bookmark name, URL, and content, with type, date, and tag filters. | Whether extraction covers the pages and file formats you save, and whether results provide enough context. |
| Notes and supported attachment text across accounts | Apple’s Mac guide describes note text, attachment filenames, some attached-file text, and account-level scope. | Whether your platform, account setup, attachment type, and locked-note behavior meet your needs. |
A notes-first app and a bookmark-first manager overlap, but their documented scopes are different. If you need both authored ideas and saved-page text, you may need two libraries; check how they work together and whether you can still search them offline or after a service change. Those integration and offline details are not established by the product guides cited here.

Try searches that resemble your real retrieval problems
Before moving a large archive or committing to a workflow, use representative material and queries. This checks practical fit without treating a feature list as proof of real-world performance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Add or select a few representative notes, links, PDFs, and other files you expect to find later.
- Search a phrase you remember, then try a partial URL or title.
- Use a tag or date filter where available, and see whether you can narrow the result set without losing the item.
- Search for a term that appears only inside a saved page or attachment. Confirm that the file type and its contents are actually indexed.
- Inspect the result context, then open the match and confirm it is the original or saved copy you intended to retrieve.
Check persistence, access, and data control separately
Search quality is not the only long-term concern. If you rely on saved-page copies, backups, or access across devices, check those capabilities directly rather than inferring them from search documentation. Raindrop.io’s Pro page advertises web archives and daily backups, as well as full-text search across saved page content and YouTube speech. These are vendor-stated product claims, not independently verified recovery outcomes; check current plan terms before relying on them.
Before making a paid service your archive, also review its current plan requirements, privacy terms, export options, and portability. The product pages cited here do not establish those details across the options discussed, so no comparative claim about cost, privacy, or export guarantees follows from their search features.
