A CRPG is a computer role-playing game; an action RPG emphasizes real-time play and direct control. The labels describe different dimensions, so a game can be both.
What makes a game an RPG?
There is no universally accepted checklist that settles every genre debate. Researchers José P. Zagal and Sebastian Deterding describe role-playing games as a social category: communities use the term in different ways, while recurring features connect many of its forms. Their account identifies character creation and enactment in a fictional world, player-directed actions and goals, and rules that structure play. Character progression and rules for resolving combat are also common, but neither is a universal requirement. Zagal and Deterding, “Definitions of Role-Playing Games”

A useful working test is to ask whether playing and shaping a character is central to the experience. The character might be created by the player or developed through play; rules and choices shape what that character can do. Stats, leveling, combat, and branching story choices are clues, not individual pass-or-fail tests.
- A fantasy setting is common, not required.
- Turn-based combat, a party, extensive dialogue, and a level system are not necessary in every RPG.
- A game’s label is not settled by one surface feature or by a single publisher or fan classification.
What does CRPG mean?
CRPG stands for computer role-playing game. It names a recognized form of RPG played through a computer, rather than a fixed set of design features. The term does not by itself specify camera angle, party size, combat mode, or how much dialogue a game contains.

RPGs also include tabletop games, live-action role-playing, and multiplayer online role-playing games. These forms share historical roots—including tabletop Dungeons & Dragons—but developed different styles and communities, as Zagal and Deterding explain.
How do CRPGs differ from action RPGs?
The terms answer different questions. CRPG points to the computer-mediated RPG form; action RPG describes a style of play in which the player makes decisions and acts through real-time, direct control, rather than having a menu or tactical interface separate them from the character. Xbox Wire’s genre overview notes that the line between action RPGs and more traditional RPGs is difficult to draw precisely. Xbox Wire, “Know Your Genres: Action Role-Playing Games”

Because one term describes a broad form and the other a play emphasis, a computer game can be both a CRPG and an action RPG. Action RPGs often put more weight on combat and focus on one controllable character, but these are tendencies, not requirements.
| Question to ask | CRPG | Action RPG |
|---|---|---|
| What does the label describe? | A computer-based form of role-playing game. | A real-time, direct-control emphasis within role-playing play. |
| How are actions commonly carried out? | Not fixed by the label; games may use menus, tactical interfaces, real-time controls, or other systems. | Typically through continuous real-time control rather than a menu or tactical interface separating player and character. |
| What tends to receive emphasis? | Not specified by the label alone. | Often combat and a single controllable character, though neither is universal. |
| Can a game fit both? | Yes, if it is a computer RPG with action-oriented real-time play. | Yes, action RPG and CRPG are not mutually exclusive categories. |
Compare games by their play, not one feature
When a genre label feels debatable, consider several dimensions together. No single answer automatically makes a game—or disqualifies it as—an RPG.

- Character and role: How much do creating, developing, or inhabiting a character shape the experience?
- Rules and builds: Do character attributes, abilities, and rule-governed actions meaningfully shape what is possible?
- Control and timing: Are choices made through menus or tactical interfaces, or executed continuously in real time?
- Where challenge sits: Does success depend more on character statistics and build choices, on timing and direct execution, or on a mix? RPG forms vary, and action emphasis does not mean statistics stop mattering.
- Party and combat: Does the player manage a group or primarily control one character? Is combat the central activity or one part of a broader role-playing experience?
- Player choices and goals: Can players shape what their character pursues or how they act in the fictional world?
Examples show how the genre has evolved
Historical examples illustrate tendencies, not a definitive taxonomy. Xbox Wire’s 2015 overview points to Rogue and Dragon Slayer as influential 1980s examples in the development of action-RPG conventions. It describes Diablo (1997) as a PC action RPG emphasizing combat, randomized dungeons, and loot, and Dark Souls as combining detailed character customization and intricate combat with action-based controls.
These games show why a simple split can mislead: real-time action can coexist with character development and other role-playing systems. The more useful question is how central character, rules, choices, and direct execution are to the particular game.
