Deliberate, learnable combat, meaningful consequences for failure, challenging bosses, and worlds that reward exploration often appear together. No single feature is mandatory, and games in the lineage adapt the formula in different ways.
What makes a game a Soulslike?
“Soulslike” is a descriptive label for games that borrow a meaningful selection of patterns associated with Dark Souls and related FromSoftware titles. A 2024 peer-reviewed synthesis identifies demanding combat, consequential failure, checkpoints, interconnected level design, boss battles, and environmental storytelling as recurring traits, while noting that influenced games can adapt only some of them and still have their own identity: The Soulsification of video games.

The elements work together. Players learn from encounters and setbacks; exploration can reveal routes, resources, and context; and the world often asks them to pay attention rather than follow a simple sequence of markers. The label describes a family resemblance, not an official checklist or a claim that every mechanic originated with Dark Souls.

What is Soulslike combat like?
Observe, learn, and choose when to act
In many Soulslikes, combat rewards watching an enemy’s movements, recognizing openings, and choosing when to commit to an attack or defense. Players may need to manage timing and resources, then adjust equipment or tactics when a strategy fails. The goal is not necessarily to make every fight slow; it is to make success depend on reading the encounter as well as executing moves.

Bosses often make this learning process more visible. A difficult fight may test familiarity with attack patterns, preparation through equipment or build choices, or both. In its Elden Ring overview, Bandai Namco describes bosses as progression tests and points to options such as seeking help or exploring elsewhere.
How it differs from action RPG combat
There is no universal dividing line between Soulslike combat and other action RPG combat. A useful comparison is whether encounters strongly reward learning enemy patterns and managing the consequences of a mistimed move, rather than relying mainly on rapid attacks or character progression. Many action RPGs share individual mechanics such as dodging, stamina, or boss fights; those alone do not make a game a Soulslike.

Why are Soulslike games so hard?
Difficulty is usually more than high enemy damage or a large health bar. It can come from demanding encounters, limited room for mistakes, unfamiliar patterns, and the cost of failure. Checkpoints shape that pressure: in Dark Souls, bonfires restore health and magic, while ordinary enemies respawn. That creates a trade-off between recovering and facing the route’s threats again. Other games use different death penalties and recovery systems.
FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki described the intended balance in a 2024 Game Informer interview: “When players are killed, and they can understand why they were killed in an instance, and it feels justified – ‘Okay, yeah, that makes sense’ – that’s the game design we’re trying to achieve.” He said the team aims for a learning curve and feedback loop, while acknowledging room for improvement. That is the designer’s goal, not a guarantee that every player will find a particular game fair or enjoyable.

In a 2013 PlayStation.Blog interview, Miyazaki encouraged newcomers to learn through failure and described overcoming difficulty as part of the experience. He summed up his view this way: “Rather, ‘challenging’ means ‘a lot of fun’.” That expresses his design perspective, not a universal response from players.
Difficulty can include choices
Difficulty options vary by game. Bandai Namco says Elden Ring has no difficulty setting, but players can choose tools and approaches such as summons, changing a build or equipment, and exploring beyond a difficult obstacle. That particular mix should not be assumed for every Soulslike.

How does world design fit the formula?
Routes, shortcuts, and discoveries
Dark Souls’ publisher describes a seamless, vertically oriented world whose areas and dungeons are intertwined. Branching routes, shortcuts, and details in the environment can make exploration part of solving the game: a newly opened path may change how a familiar area connects, while objects and surroundings can offer clues about the setting.

Demon’s Souls uses a level-selection structure; Dark Souls emphasizes linked areas; Bloodborne combines connected locations with a hub; and Elden Ring makes exploration across an open world central. Asked about Bloodborne’s map, Miyazaki said in a 2015 PlayStation.Blog interview: “I wanted to take the best of both approaches. So every area is linked in one way or another much like the first Dark Souls, but you also have a hub system like Demon’s Souls.”

Open worlds are one variation, not a requirement
Elden Ring expands the player’s choice about where to go: Bandai Namco says players can tackle challenges in a preferred order and explore beyond a difficult obstacle. That openness changes how progression can work without removing demanding combat. A Soulslike does not have to be open-world, just as it does not have to use Dark Souls’ precise map structure.
Online systems are optional to the definition
Dark Souls’ official description also highlights online messages, encounters with other players, co-op, and invasions. These systems can shape how a particular game feels, but they are examples of that game’s design—not requirements for every Soulslike.
What happens when you die in a Soulslike?
There is no single death rule across the category. In Dark Souls, bonfires provide recovery points and ordinary enemies return when the player rests; other games differ in what they ask players to recover, what progress they retain, and where they resume. To understand a specific game’s stakes, check what death costs, whether lost resources can be reclaimed, how far the return point is, and what changes after resting.
How to tell whether a game is a Soulslike
Rather than counting familiar features, compare the design dimensions that shape play. They help distinguish a meaningful influence from a game that shares just one common action-game mechanic.
- Combat: How much do timing, observation, defensive choices, and resource management matter? Can players adapt to enemy patterns?
- Failure and checkpoints: What is lost on death? Is recovery possible? Where does the player return, and what changes after resting?
- World structure: Are areas interconnected, arranged around hubs, or spread across an open world? Can exploration change the order of progression?
- Bosses: Do major encounters test learned patterns, preparation, or both? Can players seek help or go elsewhere?
- Build and player choice: How much can weapons, armor, abilities, summons, or other approaches change the challenge?
- Story delivery: Does the game explain events directly, or ask players to infer context from objects, locations, and character encounters?
These are comparison questions, not pass-or-fail rules. A game can resemble Souls titles strongly in combat and failure systems while taking a different approach to story or map design.
