A Metroidvania is best understood as an exploration-led game built around a connected or revisitable world. As players gain abilities, items, or knowledge, new routes become possible—and familiar places can offer fresh opportunities. Side-scrolling action is common, but it is not the defining feature; the genre’s boundaries remain disputed.
What defines a Metroidvania?
The central pattern is a loop: explore a world, discover a new capability or clue, use it to reach places that were inaccessible before, and return to earlier areas with more options. In a 2025 roundtable, developers described the appeal as exploring, discovering, expanding, and growing. Game designer Koji Igarashi likewise described exploration supported by a gradually expanding toolset, with players doubling back when they can reach previously blocked areas.
This is a useful working definition, not a universally binding checklist. Some people use “Metroidvania” narrowly for side-scrolling action-adventures on a continuous map, where finding an item lets the player pass an obstacle and backtrack. Broader definitions include 3D games, and some accounts emphasize role-playing elements. These are competing conventions, not proof that one camera angle, combat style, or feature is mandatory.
How exploration shapes the game
In an exploration-focused game, players choose routes, inspect spaces, and uncover destinations or secrets rather than simply clearing a fixed sequence of separate stages. Nintendo describes the Metroid series as exploratory action set in a maze-like world, where items and weapons expand the areas a player can visit. A connected world gives discoveries context: a locked route seen earlier can become a meaningful destination after a new ability is found.

Exploration is especially rewarding when a discovery changes what players can do or how they interpret a familiar place. Supraland developer David Münnich has argued for versatile abilities that encourage experimentation and let players see the world differently. That is one designer’s preference, not a universal genre rule: a game can rely on simpler keys and gates and still follow the broader exploration-and-return structure.
Abilities, gates, and new routes
An ability gate is an obstacle or route that cannot be passed until the player has a relevant capability or item. It might require a movement skill, a tool, or knowledge of how to interact with the environment. In Metroid Dread, Nintendo describes new capabilities expanding the doors Samus can open, walls she can destroy, and paths she can take.

Gates give progression a spatial shape: instead of only making a character stronger, a new ability can change which parts of the world are reachable. A clearly signposted obstacle can also give players a reason to remember a location and return later. That return may reveal a new route, a shortcut, or a secret.
Abilities need not function only as one-use keys. The Ori and the Will of the Wisps design interview discusses Spirit Shards that support different play styles, while Supraland’s developer favors tools with multiple possible uses. A useful way to compare games is to ask whether each new power opens varied interactions and choices, or mainly clears one matching barrier at a time.

Maps, navigation, and backtracking
A map can help players maintain their bearings, remember blocked routes, plan journeys, and spot places worth revisiting. Nintendo’s Metroid Dread report describes map markers, hints for hidden items, and highlighting icons across area maps. The developers called the map a foundation for exploration.
An in-game map is common, but it is not established as a requirement for the genre. PLAYISM roundtable participant Shutaro Iida said that gradually filling out a map most strongly evokes Metroidvania for him. By contrast, Supraland’s developer deliberately omitted a minimap to encourage players to look at the world directly. These choices affect how much players must rely on memory and environmental cues; they do not settle whether a game qualifies.

Backtracking works best when a return has a purpose: a new ability makes a blocked path usable, a shortcut reduces travel friction, or new knowledge changes how an earlier area can be approached. There is no universal threshold for how much backtracking is acceptable. Its pacing is a design and player-experience judgment, not a measurable genre test.

- World structure: How interconnected are the spaces, and how often can players revisit them?
- Progression: Do new traversal abilities, items, or knowledge unlock routes?
- Route choice: Can players choose where to explore, or does the game mostly direct them along a fixed sequence?
- Ability versatility: Do new powers support several kinds of interaction, or chiefly open one corresponding obstacle at a time?
- Navigation: How do maps, markers, and environmental cues help players find their way and remember opportunities?
These comparisons describe differences in design; they are not an official standard. A game may fit a narrow side-scrolling convention or a broader structural definition, so it is clearest to explain which pattern it follows.
