The label is a useful shorthand, not a globally binding checklist: aircraft described as fifth-generation do not all have identical performance or missions.
What “fifth-generation” means
The term describes a broad evolution beyond fourth- and 4.5-generation fighters. The Congressional Research Service (CRS) associates it with a package of technologies including stealth, internal weapons carriage, advanced sensors and integrated avionics. The label is not an international certification with a fixed set of requirements, so it is more accurate to attribute it to the analysts, services or manufacturers using it than to treat every feature as mandatory. The important idea is integration. Low observability, sensors, information processing and communications are intended to work together, rather than functioning as unrelated upgrades. Different aircraft emphasize different combinations of those capabilities.
Core capabilities, in plain language
Low observability and internal weapons
Shaping and materials are designed to make an aircraft harder for relevant sensors to detect or track. “Stealth” does not mean invisible: effectiveness depends on conditions and sensor type, and public descriptions do not provide enough information to quantify real-world signatures or compare them reliably.

Carrying primary weapons inside the aircraft helps preserve a low-observable configuration. The F-35 can also carry weapons externally on missions where reducing its signature is less important, according to CRS. External stores change the configuration; they do not make stealth an all-or-nothing property.
Advanced sensors and sensor fusion
Advanced sensors gather information, while integrated avionics process and present it. Sensor fusion brings multiple information streams together to help the pilot build a more useful picture of the situation. The U.S. Air Force describes the F-35 in terms of stealth, sensor fusion and situational awareness. Those descriptions support the broad capability claim, not a particular detection range or a claim that it outperforms every other aircraft. U.S. Air Force F-35A fact sheet
Communications and networking
Communications links can connect a fighter to other aircraft and forces, allowing information to be shared beyond the cockpit. The Air Force cites flexible communications links for the F-35. Lockheed Martin, the aircraft’s manufacturer, describes it as gathering, processing and sharing data across a networked architecture. The latter is the manufacturer’s broader characterization, rather than an independent comparative assessment. Lockheed Martin F-35 product page

- IFF antenna array in front of the cockpit distinguishes this CCIP-equipped model from other F-16s.
- Curved form of the F-16 accurately reproduced with trademark Tamiya precision.
- Moveable horizontal stabilizers. "Flaperons" can be modelled in the up or down positions.
- Full ordnance load including AGM-88 HARM, AIM-120C AMRAAM, AIM-9M/X Sidewinder, ECM pod, and fuel tanks included.
- Centerline and inner wing pylons as well as tail assembly feature polycaps to allow easy detachment for storage.
Speed and maneuverability
Some traits associated with fifth-generation aircraft are not universal requirements. Supercruise means sustained supersonic flight without afterburner; CRS includes it among technologies associated with the generation, and the Air Force specifically lists it for the F-22. The Air Force also describes the F-22 in terms of maneuverability. These examples do not establish that every aircraft called fifth-generation can supercruise or has the same maneuvering performance. How the F-22 and F-35 illustrate the label
The U.S. Air Force’s public descriptions show why the label is better understood as a family of capabilities than as one identical design. The F-22 description emphasizes stealth, supercruise, maneuverability and integrated avionics. The F-35 description emphasizes stealth, sensor fusion and situational awareness. These summaries illustrate different emphases; they are not a like-for-like test or an overall ranking.
The F-35 itself has three versions with different takeoff, landing and basing designs, as CRS explains. A comparison should account for those intended roles and variant differences rather than assuming every version is interchangeable. CRS report on fighter aircraft

How to compare claims about fighter generations
When evaluating a claim that an aircraft is fifth-generation—or comparing two aircraft—look at the evidence for each capability separately:

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Low observability and weapons carriage: What configuration is being described, and does it include internal or external stores?
- Sensors and information fusion: Does the source describe integrated information for the pilot, or make a more specific performance claim?
- Networking and interoperability: Is the claim supported by a service or government source, or is it the manufacturer’s characterization?
- Speed and maneuverability: Which aircraft and configuration does the evidence actually cover?
- Mission and basing: Are the aircraft designed for different roles or operating environments?
Public descriptions explain broad design goals, but the sources cited here do not provide a common trial or scoring system for stealth, sensor fusion or overall capability. They therefore cannot support a reliable cross-country ranking or a single overall winner.
