A belt-driven racing wheel sends force from its motor through belts and pulleys to the steering shaft. A direct-drive (DD) wheel attaches the steering wheel to the motor shaft itself. Removing that transmission can make force-feedback detail feel more immediate and can support higher torque, but the drive type alone does not determine how a wheel feels: the game’s signal, motor, firmware, settings, platform support, and mounting all matter.
How the two drive systems work
Belt-driven wheelbases
A wheelbase is the powered unit that creates steering resistance and force feedback. In a belt-driven design, the motor turns a belt-and-pulley system connected to the wheel shaft. The belt can smooth vibration, but its compliance under load may soften small cues or make feedback feel less immediate, particularly around center. Designs vary, so this is not a verdict on every belt-driven wheel.

Direct-drive wheelbases
In a DD design, the wheel mounts directly to the motor shaft, with no belt or gear transmission between them. Thrustmaster describes its DD bases as having an electromagnetic motor directly connected to the wheel axis (Thrustmaster’s Direct Drive technology explainer). That shorter mechanical path can preserve force-feedback detail, though it does not guarantee a flawless or universally better feel.
What may feel different while driving
Without a belt between motor and wheel, changes in steering load and smaller force-feedback cues may feel more immediate or distinct. Depending on what the game sends and how the wheelbase is configured, those cues can include road texture, rumble strips, skids, or vehicle movement. They are possibilities, not details every game or setup will provide.

Belt drive remains a capable force-feedback arrangement. It can feel smoother and quieter than a gear-driven design and may suit a driver who wants a less demanding setup. Direct drive does not, by itself, make someone faster: the cited manufacturer material and product specifications establish mechanical and torque differences, not a universal lap-time improvement.
How to compare torque claims
Torque is rotational force, stated by wheelbase makers in newton-metres (Nm). A peak-torque rating is not interchangeable with a constant or sustained-torque rating. Thrustmaster’s 2024 technical PDF explains that these describe different capabilities and that the game signal, firmware, hardware, and platform integration also shape what reaches the driver (Thrustmaster’s 2024 technical paper).

For scale, Thrustmaster said in 2024 that DD motors can provide force-feedback torque mainly in a 5–15 Nm range. That is a broad manufacturer statement, not a universal range or a recommended target. Thrustmaster also describes the T818 as delivering 10 Nm of constant torque; treat that as a claim about that specific model, not a directly comparable peak figure (Thrustmaster T818 product page).

- Drive mechanism and priorities: Decide whether a potentially more immediate, detailed feel is worth prioritizing over the smoother character and simpler setup you may prefer from a belt-driven wheel.
- Torque measurement: Check whether each Nm figure is peak, constant, or sustained. Do not rank wheelbases by the number alone.
- Platform and game support: Confirm compatibility for the exact model, console, and games you use, including any firmware requirements. The DD Pro page lists PS5, PS4, and PC support.
- Mounting: Check desk thickness, cockpit compatibility, clamp availability, and whether the setup can safely support the base. The cited DD Pro’s table clamp is optional.
- Accessory compatibility: Verify the steering wheel, quick release, pedals, shifter, and adapters against the specific base; compatibility can depend on model and connection type.
- Usable force: Set output to suit your preferences and mounting. More torque is not automatically better if you cannot use it comfortably or safely.
Is direct drive worth it?
Choose based on the experience and setup you want, not the label alone. DD is the option to consider if direct motor connection, potentially clearer small cues, or higher torque are priorities. A belt-driven wheel can make sense if its feel and setup better fit your needs. In either case, compare compatible models on the same platform, inspect how their torque figures are measured, and account for mounting and accessories.

The manufacturer specifications cited here do not establish a universal torque target, independent lap-time gain, or controlled head-to-head result proving that one drive type always feels better.
