A baking soda rocket launches because baking soda and vinegar produce carbon dioxide gas inside a closed canister. The gas builds pressure until it forces the lid off; as the gas rushes out, it pushes the canister in the opposite direction. The fizz makes the gas visible, but the rapid exhaust release is what provides the thrust.
How baking soda and vinegar make a rocket launch
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, and vinegar contains acetic acid. Their reaction forms carbonic acid, which then breaks down into water and carbon dioxide. The bubbles you see are evidence that carbon dioxide is being produced. The Lunar and Planetary Institute’s activity describes this process in two stages.

In an open cup, the gas can escape as it forms, so little pressure accumulates. In a closed film canister, gas is temporarily trapped. As more gas forms, pressure rises until it pushes the lid off. Pressurized gas then rushes out through the opening, pushing the canister the other way. With the opening facing down, that push sends the canister upward.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSo the reaction supplies the gas, while pressure buildup and the escaping gas explain the launch. The mixture does not simply lift the rocket directly, and fizzing in an open container is not enough to produce the same effect. This is a small demonstration of pressure-driven thrust, not the fuel system or scale used by a spacecraft.

What changes how high it flies?
The outcome depends on both the gas-producing setup and the rocket’s design. The Lunar and Planetary Institute suggests testing added mass and changing the rocket’s shape; Science Buddies’ activity proposes varying the amounts of vinegar and baking soda. Change one factor at a time so you can tell what affected the result.
- Mass: An added load changes what the thrust must lift.
- Ingredient amounts: Different quantities change the setup, but the sources do not establish one best mixture for all canisters and conditions.
- Shape: Body, fin, and nose-cone design can affect lift-off or flight.
Make a prediction before each run, use the same launch location and measurement method, and record the relative flight height. Do not assume that a particular ingredient ratio or design will produce a guaranteed height.
One published activity result
Science Buddies reports that its canister with nearly a full measure of vinegar launched roughly 6 feet, while its lowest-vinegar setup flew nearly 15 feet. The page does not state a publication year. These are results from that publisher’s activity, not a general benchmark or an independently replicated finding.

- [ Rush to the sky! ] Rceico's rocket can reach a maximum altitude of 170 FEET! take it to an open space and start your rocket launch journey!
- [ Safe landing ] The rocket's shell is made of EEP foam material, and its light weight greatly improves its launch altitude. When the rocket flies to a certain height, the parachute will open automatically. The parachute + EEP foam material shell allows you to not worry about the possibility of the rocket breaking when landing.
- [ Night Launch] 'What if I can only be with my kids at night?' 'I won't be able to find the flying rocket at night.' No need to worry! We have installed lights on the rocket body so you can launch it at night and keep track of where it lands.
- [Delayed Launch] Since the propeller will be running at high speed when it starts, we have set a 3S delayed launch time for you. 3S after placing the rocket on the launch pad and pressing the launch button, the rocket will not run, giving you time to go to a safe place and wait for the rocket to start.
- [No need battery] The rocket has a built-in battery inside, USB-QC charging (the charging cable is in the package), it only takes 35 minutes to fully charge, and it can launch about 25 times on a single charge, saving the cost and trouble of replacing the battery.
Materials and example setup
The Lunar and Planetary Institute lists a plastic 35-mm film canister with a lid that fits inside the rim, baking soda, vinegar, measuring spoons, cardstock, tape, and eye protection. Its example uses one teaspoon of vinegar and one-half teaspoon of baking soda in the canister. Those amounts describe that activity’s classroom procedure; they are not an established optimum for other vessels or conditions.
The activity also uses cardstock to make a paper rocket body, evenly spaced fins, and a nose cone. If comparing designs, keep the canister and launch procedure consistent while changing just one feature at a time.

Follow the complete instructions for the particular activity and supervise children. The Lunar and Planetary Institute calls for eye protection and for other children to stand at least 10 feet away. NASA’s SPEED IT UP educator guide says to keep the canister away from the launcher’s face and other students, step back after release, and never point the rocket at anyone.

- It's pocket sized rocket science
- Flies up to 50 feet
- Powered by vinegar and baking soda
- A practical demonstration of chemical reactions
- Adult supervision required for children under 14
If it has not launched in about 30 seconds, NASA’s guide says to call the teacher to check it; when checking, keep the lid directed into the pan. Do not lean over or point the canister toward a person.
How this differs from a volcano demonstration
A baking soda-and-vinegar volcano and this rocket use the same reaction to produce carbon dioxide, but the rocket depends on trapping gas briefly so pressure can build and then escape through the canister opening. The analogy also has limits: the National Park Service notes that water is the principal gas driving most explosive volcanic eruptions, rather than carbon dioxide from a classroom mixture.
