Word of mouth and rising App Store visibility reinforced that conversation. That is a plausible explanation, not a proven formula: creator Dong Nguyen said he did not know exactly why the game became so popular.
Why was Flappy Bird easy to start but hard to master?
One tap explained the whole game
Players tapped to make the bird fly over and under obstacles. Nguyen described that control idea as “pretty much the simplest idea that I can think of,” in an interview with The Washington Post. The premise required little explanation, so a player could begin almost immediately.

Simple controls did not mean easy progress
WIRED’s contemporary account described short rounds, frequent failure, and players trying to beat their previous scores. The contrast is central: the game was easy to begin, but staying alive and improving took effort. It is reasonable to read that gap as part of its appeal—each attempt was quick, while success remained uncertain—but the reporting does not establish a single psychological mechanism behind its popularity.
Nguyen also said the pixel-art style recalled games he played growing up, giving the spare presentation a familiar look without adding complexity to the controls.

How did Flappy Bird spread?
Players turned attempts into conversation
A game that produces quick wins and quick failures gives players something immediate to report: a score, a near miss, or a complaint about another failed run. WIRED traced Flappy Bird’s growth through word of mouth and social reactions. Nguyen separately suggested that people sharing scores on social networks may have helped, while stressing that the reason for the game’s popularity was unclear to him, as The Washington Post reported.
Together, those accounts point to a reinforcing cycle: people played, reacted, shared their experiences, and introduced others to the game. They do not show that one particular post, influencer, or platform algorithm caused the breakout.

App Store rankings increased its visibility
After remaining relatively obscure for months, the game began climbing the U.S. App Store’s free-game rankings in late 2013 and early 2014. WIRED reported that it reached No. 1 on January 17, 2014. A top chart position likely brought the game in front of more potential players, further amplifying existing interest; the available accounts do not quantify how much the ranking itself contributed.

By February 2014, CBS News reported more than 50 million downloads in at least 100 countries. That is a figure reported at the time, not an independently audited lifetime total.

Why did Nguyen remove the game?
Nguyen said he took Flappy Bird down because of its effect on players, not because a legal threat had been established. “The main reason of removing ‘Flappy Bird’ is the negative effect to my players,” he told The Washington Post, describing the game’s unexpectedly addictive quality. As attention around the game grew, reporting also described unusual scrutiny and harassment directed at its creator.
Claims that Nintendo caused the removal were speculation in the contemporary coverage; the available reporting does not establish that a legal threat prompted Nguyen’s decision.

Was there one secret behind the viral hit?
No single cause is established. Nguyen himself said the reason Flappy Bird became so popular was unclear to him. Its one-tap mechanic made it approachable; its difficulty made attempts and scores memorable; social sharing made reactions visible; and chart success likely helped more people discover it. Those factors fit the reported sequence, but they were not isolated or measured as separate causes.
The same success that made the game a broad online event also brought attention Nguyen said he did not want. Popularity, in this case, was not only a matter of downloads: it became a social phenomenon and a personal burden for its creator.
