Liquid Glass is the dynamic visual material at the center of Apple’s iOS 26 redesign, but the update changes more than how surfaces look. It also reshapes navigation, toolbars, search, menus, controls and app icons. For app teams, standard system components can pick up much of the new appearance after a rebuild with the new SDK; custom interfaces still need a deliberate review.
What Liquid Glass is—and what changes for iPhone users
Apple describes Liquid Glass as a material with glass-like optical properties and fluidity. It reflects and refracts what lies beneath it in real time, then transforms dynamically. Apple’s stated design goal is to keep attention on content, but the company’s feature guide does not provide measured evidence that the design improves usability or comprehension. The new look appears across the Lock Screen, Control Center, navigation, controls and app icons. But Liquid Glass is not simply a transparent coating: several changes affect where controls sit and how they behave.
- Navigation and tab bars: The iPhone tab bar floats above content and can shrink while scrolling, then expand when needed.
- Toolbars and navigation: These can morph as people move between views or bring tools into use.
- Search: Search moves near the bottom of the screen in several Apple apps.
- Menus and alerts: Text-editing context menus expand vertically, while alerts can expand in place from the button that initiated them.
- App icons: Icons gain layered, light, dark, tinted and clear appearances.
These are concrete changes to the relationship between content and controls. A floating tab bar may leave more visible room as someone scrolls; a relocated search control changes where they look for it. Those observations do not establish that tasks become faster or easier.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
What changes for app developers
Apple’s WWDC25 SwiftUI and UIKit sessions describe updates to tab views, split views, navigation bars, toolbars, presentations, search and controls. Standard components can adopt much of the new appearance when an app is rebuilt with the current SDK. Apple’s Platforms State of the Union session said apps built with Xcode 16 keep their existing interface when run on iOS 26, while rebuilding with Xcode 26 renders standard controls in the new design. This is a statement from the WWDC25 cycle, not a guarantee about later SDKs; check the documentation for the SDK and OS version you ship. Apple’s WWDC25 Platforms State of the Union
Apple UIKit engineer Sanaa summarized the adoption behavior this way: “Your apps get this new appearance as soon as you recompile with the new SDK.” Apple’s WWDC25 UIKit session

Start with the system components
Before changing custom styling, rebuild and inspect the app’s standard components on the target OS. Apple recommends using system components and avoiding hard-coded metrics when relying on system layouts, allowing shapes and sizes to adapt to the new design. The SwiftUI session covers app structure, floating tab bars, sidebars, toolbars, search and controls; the UIKit session covers tabs, split views, navigation, presentations and custom UI.

Apple presents Liquid Glass as a material for controls and navigation, not as a universal replacement for every background or visual effect. Once system components are updated, decide case by case whether a custom view should use the new material or remain distinct. The right choice depends on its role in the interface and whether people can still distinguish content, controls and hierarchy.

What to test for legibility and accessibility
Translucency puts changing content behind text, icons and controls, so review the interface across the backgrounds and states people can actually encounter. Apple’s adopting guidance says users can choose a preferred Liquid Glass look and enable accessibility settings that reduce transparency or motion; it also advises providing accessibility labels for icons. The cited guidance does not establish specific contrast outcomes or guarantees for every interface. Apple’s Liquid Glass adoption guidance
- Check text, icons and controls over varied content behind translucent surfaces.
- Confirm that navigation remains understandable when bars or tabs recede or change shape.
- Test the accessibility presentation options available on the OS versions your app supports.
- Verify that custom icons have accessibility labels and that controls remain recognizable.
These are practical checks, not evidence that Apple’s default design fails accessibility requirements. Apple’s UIKit session also recommends experiencing the material on the device and with the input method being designed for; the reviewed guidance does not name a required iPhone model. How iOS 18-era interfaces differ from iOS 26
| Area | iOS 18-era approach | iOS 26 change |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Conventional, often more opaque system surfaces | Dynamic, translucent Liquid Glass surfaces that reflect and refract underlying content |
| Navigation behavior | More fixed bars and controls | Floating, morphing or scroll-minimizing bars and controls |
| Content relationship | Controls generally occupy distinct layout regions | Some controls float above or adapt visually to content |
| Developer adoption | Existing appearance retained in the WWDC25 example when built with Xcode 16 and run on iOS 26 | Standard components receive the new appearance after rebuilding with Xcode 26 in that example; custom UI needs separate review |
