Lineage Cell Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing allogeneic cell therapies: specialized cells made from established pluripotent cell lines for potential transplantation into people with disease or injury. Its pipeline ranges from clinical-stage programs for retinal disease and spinal cord injury to preclinical and research initiatives. These treatments remain investigational; the company’s reported clinical observations do not establish efficacy or regulatory approval.
What does Lineage Cell Therapeutics do?
Lineage develops human cell types intended to replace or support cells that are absent or dysfunctional because of disease, aging, or injury. The company describes its mission and programs in its company overview.

Its approach is based on making transplant-ready cell types from established, self-renewing pluripotent cell lines. Pluripotent cells can give rise to many kinds of specialized cells; Lineage uses directed differentiation protocols to steer them toward particular developmental lineages and cell identities. The company calls its platform AlloSCOPE. This is Lineage’s description of its development approach and intended role for the cells, not evidence that a particular therapy works in patients.
How does an off-the-shelf cell therapy work?
“Allogeneic” means the cells come from a donor and are intended for use in someone other than that donor. “Off-the-shelf” describes a model in which cells are produced in advance from established cell lines, rather than made individually from each recipient’s own cells. Lineage’s platform description explains its use of pluripotent cell lines and directed differentiation to create specialized cells for potential transplantation.
#1 Best Overall
The basic idea is to make a selected cell type in a controlled production process, then deliver it to a tissue where it may replace or support cells affected by a condition. Whether transplanted cells survive, integrate, and improve meaningful outcomes is a clinical question that studies must assess. “Off-the-shelf” does not mean that Lineage currently sells an approved consumer treatment.
What is Lineage Cell Therapeutics’ pipeline?
The programs differ in their target cells, intended conditions, stage of development, collaborators, and what their studies measure. The distinction between a delivery or safety study and a study designed to establish clinical benefit matters: progress in the former does not by itself show that a therapy restores function.
| Program | Target and intended use | Stage and study focus described by Lineage | Partner or collaboration |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpRegen (RG6501) | Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell replacement for geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a form of dry AMD | Phase 2a development; GAlette evaluates subretinal delivery, safety, and activity, including delivery to target retinal regions and procedure-related adverse events | Worldwide collaboration with Roche and Genentech |
| OPC1 | Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells for spinal cord injury | DOSED evaluates the safety and utility of a delivery device in subacute and chronic injury; Lineage also describes long-term follow-up from earlier trials | Not stated on the cited program page |
| ReSonance (ANP1) | Auditory neuron progenitor cell transplant for sensorineural hearing loss | Preclinical | Research collaboration with William Demant Invest |
| COR1 | Corneal endothelial cell therapy; expected indications include Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy and bullous keratopathy | Development stage not stated on the cited other-programs page | Not stated on the cited other-programs page |
Program descriptions and stages can change. Lineage’s OpRegen page, OPC1 page, and other programs page provide the company’s descriptions; its March 2026 Form 8-K also lists research initiatives PNC1, RND1, and ILT1.

OpRegen, also referred to as RG6501, is Lineage’s allogeneic RPE cell replacement therapy candidate for GA secondary to AMD. RPE cells support the retina, and the program’s intended approach is to transplant cells beneath the retina. Lineage describes OpRegen as being in Phase 2a development under a worldwide collaboration with Roche and Genentech.
Rank #3
The GAlette study evaluates subretinal surgical delivery, safety, and activity. Its stated primary objectives include whether cells can be delivered to target retinal regions and assessment of procedure-related adverse events. Structural imaging is among the secondary assessments. Those study measures help characterize delivery and safety as well as signs of activity; they should not be treated as proof of clinical benefit.
How to interpret Lineage’s reported visual-acuity observations
Lineage reports that participants in Phase 1/2a Cohort 4 with less advanced GA had a mean best-corrected visual acuity change of +6.2 Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) letters among 10 treated eyes that completed three-year follow-up. In a subset of five participants with extensive treatment coverage, the company reported a mean change of +9.0 letters. These are small-cohort, company-reported observations, not results that can be generalized to all patients or taken as proof that OpRegen is effective. Lineage also describes retinal structural observations from imaging as study findings. See the company’s OpRegen program page for its account of the program and reported findings.

OPC1 is an allogeneic oligodendrocyte progenitor cell therapy candidate for spinal cord injury. Lineage describes its rationale as replacing or supporting cells in the injured spinal cord. The company reports that its earlier clinical experience includes a five-person Phase 1 safety trial in acute thoracic injury and a 25-person Phase 1/2a trial in subacute cervical injury, with long-term follow-up.
The current DOSED study evaluates the safety and utility of a novel device for delivering OPC1 to the injury area in people with subacute and chronic spinal cord injury. A study focused on a delivery device is not evidence that OPC1 restores function. Lineage’s OPC1 program page describes the study and earlier trial history.

Which programs are earlier-stage or research initiatives?
ReSonance (ANP1)
Lineage describes ReSonance as a preclinical auditory neuron progenitor cell transplant program for sensorineural hearing loss. The company reports a research collaboration with William Demant Invest to advance it.
COR1 and other research
COR1 is a corneal endothelial cell therapy program. Lineage identifies Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy and bullous keratopathy as expected indications; the cited program material does not state a development stage. Lineage’s March 2026 Form 8-K also lists PNC1, RND1, and ILT1 as research initiatives. The company’s other programs page and March 2026 filing are the cited descriptions.
How should you compare Lineage’s programs?
Compare what each program is trying to do and what its studies measure, rather than ranking it by how promising its description sounds.

- Target cell and intended role: OpRegen targets retinal pigment epithelium; OPC1 targets oligodendrocyte progenitor cells; ReSonance targets auditory neuron progenitor cells.
- Condition: OpRegen is being developed for GA secondary to AMD, OPC1 for spinal cord injury, and ReSonance for sensorineural hearing loss.
- Development stage: OpRegen is described as Phase 2a, while ReSonance is preclinical. OPC1 has a delivery-device study and follow-up from earlier clinical trials; this is distinct from evidence of restored function.
- Study endpoint: A study may focus on whether cells can be delivered and whether the procedure is safe, or it may assess clinical outcomes. Those questions are related but not interchangeable.
- Collaboration: Lineage describes a worldwide Roche and Genentech collaboration for OpRegen and a research collaboration with William Demant Invest for ReSonance.
