There is no single established transmission range or reliability rating for gaseous plasma antennas. Their performance depends on whether the ionized gas behaves sufficiently like a conductor at the operating frequency, how much RF energy collisions dissipate, and how consistently the discharge and antenna geometry are controlled. In a real link, distance also depends on the complete radio system and its environment.
What limits a plasma antenna’s range?
A gaseous plasma antenna uses ionized gas as an RF structure. Some designs radiate directly from a plasma column; others use plasma to manipulate waves. In either case, the plasma’s electromagnetic properties and the physical design determine how effectively the antenna radiates and in which directions.

The literature does not establish one transmission distance that applies across designs. Antenna gain and radiation pattern vary with plasma parameters and geometry, while a communication link’s usable distance also depends on the transmitter, receiver, frequency, surroundings, and other link-budget conditions. The available studies do not provide a comparable end-to-end range test across different plasma antenna designs.

Why do electron density and operating frequency matter?
Electron density sets the plasma frequency, while collisions between charged particles and neutral gas affect the plasma’s effective permittivity and conductivity. These properties determine how conductor-like the plasma is at the signal frequency. The 2024 review by Magarotto and co-authors describes this behavior using a cold-plasma/Drude model: density and collision frequency both matter, relative to the operating frequency.

For a given design, increasing density can improve antenna performance, but no single density threshold guarantees a particular range or parity with a metal antenna. For example, Anderson, Melazzi, and Lancellotti modeled a 2 GHz linear array and found maximum gain similar to an equivalent metallic array above 1018 m−3. That result depended on their modeled configuration and assumptions, including argon plasma, 15 mTorr neutral pressure, and a 3 eV electron temperature; it is not a universal performance threshold.
How do collisions, gas, and pressure affect performance?
Collisions dissipate RF energy, reducing the portion available for radiation. Gas type and neutral pressure influence collision frequency and the plasma’s complex permittivity, as explained in the 2024 review.

Pressure can have competing effects. In a fixed-length case discussed in the review, raising pressure also raises plasma density, but the resulting increase in collision frequency dominates and lowers efficiency. Thus, “more plasma” does not automatically mean better radiation or longer range: density gains can be outweighed by added loss.

A plasma column is a driven discharge, not a passive metal element. Its behavior therefore depends on sustaining and controlling the discharge. The review relates density to sustaining power and collision frequency to gas and pressure; antenna dimensions and radial density distributions also influence radiation and gain.

For repeatable behavior, the relevant question is whether the discharge and measurement conditions remain controlled. Comparisons should report the gas and pressure, excitation method and power, plasma density, dimensions, and how gain, efficiency, or noise were measured. The reviewed sources do not establish a standardized service lifetime or a comparable general reliability figure.
Are plasma antennas necessarily inefficient or noisy?
No. Borg and co-authors reported that, in their experiment using a surface-wave-driven plasma column, efficiency and noise were not compromised by using plasma. Their 2000 result applies to that particular demonstrated system, not every architecture, gas, frequency, or operating environment.

The 2024 review likewise describes conditions under which a plasma antenna’s radiation pattern can approach its metallic counterpart: the plasma frequency must be sufficiently above the operating frequency, and collision frequency sufficiently low. This is a conditional result, not a claim that all plasma antennas match metal antennas.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
Selected experiments and models show that plasma antennas can perform competitively under suitable conditions and that some designs can be reconfigured. They do not establish universal superiority, a typical communication range, or a standardized field-reliability or lifetime rating. The strongest practical conclusion is conditional: performance depends on the plasma’s state at the operating frequency, its losses, the design geometry, and how consistently the discharge is controlled.
