Superconducting quantum computers are limited by noisy, drift-prone physical qubits, imperfect control, and the large overhead needed to detect and correct errors. Researchers are improving the hardware and using quantum error correction to encode information across many physical qubits. Some experiments show that larger codes can make a logical qubit more reliable, but those results do not mean a large, general-purpose fault-tolerant computer is already available.
Why superconducting quantum computers are hard to scale
A superconducting qubit is a physical circuit, not a perfectly isolated information unit. Its state can be disturbed by environmental noise, imperfect operations, and changes in the device over time. Scaling therefore means more than putting more qubits on a chip: a useful machine must control them consistently and keep errors from accumulating as operations run.

Quantum error correction addresses the problem by encoding information in a logical qubit spread across multiple physical qubits. Repeated measurements of parity checks reveal evidence of errors without directly measuring the encoded data state. The checks themselves require hardware, time, and classical computation, so the logical qubit is only an improvement if the code suppresses errors faster than its additional components and operations introduce them.
What limits the physical qubits
Noise and finite coherence
Superconducting circuits are sensitive to small disturbances. Google describes cryogenic cooling and shielding from stray light and electromagnetic fields as ways to reduce thermal and environmental noise. High-energy radiation can also disrupt processor operation. These measures reduce some sources of disturbance; they do not make a processor immune to noise.

Qubit performance can vary, too. In a specific study, Google reported that material defects dominated the observed fluctuations in energy-relaxation times. That finding identifies an important cause in the devices studied, not a universal explanation for variation in every superconducting processor.
Analog control and drift
Quantum operations depend on carefully calibrated control signals, including their frequency, amplitude, and phase. Because the processor is an analog system, its behavior can drift, making calibration a continuing operational burden rather than a one-time setup task.
Google has described work combining reinforcement learning with quantum error correction so a processor can adapt to changes during operation. It is an approach to coping with drift; the reported work does not establish that continuous adaptation has been solved across platforms.

Leakage beyond the computational states
A transmon uses its two lowest energy levels, conventionally written |0⟩ and |1⟩, to represent a qubit. The circuit also has higher levels, such as |2⟩ and |3⟩. Imperfect control pulses or residual heat can unintentionally move a qubit into one of these levels. This is called leakage.
A leaked qubit may affect neighboring qubits during two-qubit gates. The resulting errors can be correlated, which makes them harder for standard error-correction procedures to handle than isolated errors. Researchers therefore work to remove leakage or convert it into error patterns that a code can manage more effectively.
What error correction can—and cannot—do
A surface code uses a two-dimensional arrangement of physical qubits and repeated local parity checks to detect errors. A repetition code is narrower: it can efficiently study a particular error class, such as bit flips, but should not be mistaken for full protection against all quantum errors.

The key test is whether increasing the code size reduces the logical error rate. In its December 2024 account of the Willow processor, Google Quantum AI reported that each tested increase in surface-code lattice size—from 3×3 to 5×5, then 5×5 to 7×7—lowered the encoded error rate by a factor of 2.14.

| 7×7 | 2.14 times lower than at 5×5 |
Google also reported that the resulting logical qubit lasted more than twice as long as its best constituent physical qubit. These are results from Google’s Willow processor and the particular experiment described, not a benchmark that applies to every superconducting system. The Willow explainer described a 105-physical-qubit processor.
Error correction adds time and computing work
Repeated measurements produce data that a classical decoder must interpret to infer likely errors. In Google’s account of its Willow device, measurements took about one microsecond and decoder delay was 50–100 microseconds. Those are device-specific reported figures. Decoder speed matters because processing must keep pace with measurement cycles; even a decoder that keeps up can slow certain error-corrected operations.

There is also a distinction between an encouraging scaling result and a complete solution. Google reported a repetition-code error floor around 10−10 logical error per cycle and said in December 2024 that its cause was under investigation. The reported floor was not a settled explanation of the remaining errors, and repetition-code performance alone does not establish full fault tolerance.

- Improve qubits and operations: reduce physical gate and measurement errors, and improve stability over time so error correction has a better starting point.
- Cool and shield the processor: limit thermal noise and exposure to stray light and electromagnetic fields, while investigating disturbances such as high-energy radiation.
- Use error-correcting codes: distribute information across physical qubits and use repeated parity measurements to detect errors without directly reading out the encoded data.
- Manage leakage: reset leaked states or transform their effects into errors that the correction scheme can handle.
- Adapt control to drift: use calibration and adaptive methods to keep operations aligned as processor behavior changes.
- Improve circuits and decoding: design measurement sequences and classical decoders so error detection can operate at useful speed without excessive overhead.
These methods target different failure modes. Better shielding does not eliminate control errors; a larger code does not automatically help if physical errors are too frequent; and faster decoding does not by itself prevent leakage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDynamic circuits and leakage management
In a 2026 account, Google described a dynamic surface-code implementation that alternates circuit constructions and periodically swaps the roles of data and measurement qubits. The reported design allows leakage reset to be used on all qubits without adding gates to the quantum error-correction cycle. This is a particular implementation and engineering trade-off, not evidence that leakage or overhead has disappeared from superconducting processors generally.

How to read the performance claims
Reported results need their date, processor, code, and test conditions attached. Google’s December 2024 Willow figures are useful evidence that logical error can fall as a tested surface code grows, but they are vendor-reported experiments rather than independent cross-vendor comparisons.
Other Google figures are best read as historical context, not universal thresholds. In 2021, Google described physical operation errors of 10−3 against 10−12 as believed necessary for some useful algorithms. In 2023, it characterized noisy-processor experiments as reaching a few thousand quantum operations before noise degraded the state. Neither statement should be treated as a current, platform-wide limit or requirement.
Comparing processors meaningfully requires more than counting physical qubits. Relevant measures include gate and measurement error rates and their stability, coherence, leakage and correlated-error handling, how logical error changes with code size, connectivity and wiring overhead, measurement-cycle and decoder latency, and calibration burden. The cited accounts do not establish a standardized head-to-head ranking across vendors.
What the progress means for useful machines
Logical-qubit experiments are important because they test whether error correction can improve reliability as more physical qubits are committed to a code. They are not the same as demonstrating a large machine with enough reliable logical qubits, operations, and runtime to execute broad classes of useful algorithms fault-tolerantly. Superconducting quantum computers remain an active engineering effort: researchers are reducing distinct sources of error while managing the extra qubits, measurements, and classical processing that correction requires.
