What Limits Photonic Computing for AI? Power, Precision, and Data Movement

Photonic computing can speed selected AI operations, but optical throughput alone does not determine system power, accuracy, or performance.

Photonic computing can accelerate selected AI operations, especially linear algebra, but it does not make an entire AI system optical or automatically more efficient. Light can carry out computation in parallel; the system still needs to encode inputs, supply weights, handle nonlinear operations, detect results, and move data between optical and electronic components. Those costs—along with precision, heat, integration, and manufacturing—determine whether a particular design helps a particular workload.

Why do photonic AI chips still need electronics?

Photonic hardware uses light to represent or transform signals. A common target is matrix-vector multiplication, a linear operation used extensively in neural networks. But a working AI system has tasks beyond that optical calculation: it must prepare data, store and deliver weights, control the hardware, perform nonlinear functions, and process outputs.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That makes “photonic computing” a family of hybrid architectures rather than one standard design. Farmakidis, Dong, and Bhaskaran’s 2024 review, “Integrated photonic neuromorphic computing: opportunities and challenges,” groups approaches into three broad categories:

Architecture category What the category indicates What to check in a specific design
Incoherent electro-optic Combines optical and electronic processing without relying on coherent optical processing throughout. Where signals are converted, and which operations and data paths remain electronic.
Coherent electro-optic Combines electronics with optical processing that uses coherent light. How the optical processing is controlled and calibrated, and where conversion occurs.
All-optical neural network Places more of the neural-network processing in the optical domain. Which functions are genuinely optical and what electronic input, control, memory, and readout remain necessary.

The labels describe broad approaches, not equivalent levels of conversion, precision, or integration cost. A useful comparison needs the actual system boundary, not just the name of its optical architecture.

A hybrid design in practice

Kalinin and colleagues’ “Analog optical computer for AI inference and combinatorial optimization,” published in Nature on 3 September 2025, illustrates one particular hybrid. In that system, 3D optics perform matrix-vector multiplications; analog electronics handle nonlinear operations, subtraction, and annealing; and the system reads out digitally after its analog iterations. It is an example of how one architecture assigns work—not a description of every photonic processor.

Does photonic computing use less power?

It may reduce the cost of selected computations, but optical throughput or the energy of a single component cannot establish that a complete AI system uses less energy than an electronic one. A fair comparison must count the work needed to make the optical computation happen and use its results.

Depending on the architecture, that boundary can include light sources, modulators, photodetectors, digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital converters, supporting analog and digital electronics, memory access, control and calibration, thermal tuning or cooling, and the host system. The 2024 neuromorphic-computing review and Wan and colleagues’ 2025 silicon-photonics integration review discuss system and integration trade-offs, but they do not establish one comparable, independent end-to-end energy figure for photonic and electronic accelerators running the same production AI workload.

Windows 11 Pro, performance-mode switching, Wake-on-LAN and auto power-on support flexible workstation use.

Kalinin and colleagues project about 500 tera-operations per second per watt at 8-bit precision for their analog optical computer and describe the projection as more than 100 times the efficiency of leading GPUs. That is a paper projection, not a measured general-purpose deployment comparison. It should not be read as a result for other photonic designs, workloads, or a fully specified system energy boundary.

How accurate is optical computing?

Light is a continuous physical signal, but that does not give an optical computer unlimited useful precision. Noise, device variation, signal levels, conversion, calibration, and the sensitivity of the task all affect the accuracy a system can achieve. Nonlinear optical effects, amplification, and time-domain processing add further design challenges discussed in the 2024 review.

Kalinin and colleagues report 9-bit precision for their current small-scale inference hardware and use an iterative fixed-point scheme to improve robustness to analog noise. This is a result for that design, not a universal precision ceiling or a guarantee of application accuracy across models. A reported bit precision also does not, by itself, say how accurate a model’s final predictions are.

Does optical computing solve the AI data-movement problem?

No. Optical links can move data at high bandwidth, and optical processors can accelerate selected operations, but those are distinct capabilities. A compute system must still deliver inputs and weights to its processing elements, move intermediate values, and return results. Hybrid designs also pay for encoding signals into light, detecting optical outputs, and crossing between optical and electronic domains.

If memory access or data delivery is the bottleneck, accelerating the optical arithmetic alone may not improve total performance. Wan and colleagues’ review discusses optical-link development using measures such as bandwidth density and energy per bit. Those link measures describe communication links; they are not proof of an optical compute core’s end-to-end energy efficiency.

What limits integration and scale?

A practical accelerator requires photonic devices and electronics to work together densely, reliably, and at acceptable cost. Wan and colleagues’ integration review covers components including lasers and semiconductor optical amplifiers, modulators, photodetectors, waveguides, chip-fibre couplers, and co-designed electronics. It identifies thermal pathways and manufacturing yield as near-term bottlenecks and describes trade-offs among bandwidth density, thermal design, yield, and cost.

Progress in integrating optical components or building high-bandwidth links does not, on its own, show that a large photonic AI compute system can be manufactured affordably or run a full workload efficiently. Device capability, link performance, and scalable system performance are separate questions.

What has been demonstrated—and what remains a projection?

The scale of a result matters as much as the headline number. In their 2025 Nature paper, Kalinin and colleagues report physical-hardware inference for models with up to 4,096 weights through decomposition, at 9-bit precision. They also report solving optimization instances with up to 64 variables on the physical optical/analog platform.

The paper separately uses a digital twin to demonstrate larger problem instances and discusses projected larger-scale performance. Digital-twin results and projections are not physical-hardware demonstrations at those larger scales. The 2024 review likewise projects potential advantages of up to two orders of magnitude in throughput, power efficiency, and compute density for coherent and incoherent approaches relative to an example electronic platform; that is a future projection, not evidence of a broad deployment advantage.

How to compare a photonic AI system with an electronic one

Before treating a photonic system as faster or more efficient, look for a like-for-like account of the workload and the full system. Useful comparison points include:

  • Architecture: which operations are optical, which are electronic, and where signals are converted.
  • Workload: which model, task, and operating conditions were evaluated.
  • Energy boundary: whether sources, conversion, electronics, memory movement, control, thermal management, and host hardware are counted.
  • Accuracy: what precision means in the report, how it was measured, and whether task-level accuracy is maintained.
  • Performance: measured throughput and latency for the relevant workload, rather than optical-core throughput alone.
  • Practical scale: data movement, calibration, thermal design, manufacturing yield, and cost.

No universal winner follows from the available demonstrations and reviews: the answer depends on the architecture, workload, and what the comparison counts. Optical computing is a plausible accelerator for selected AI operations, but its system-level value depends on whether the gains survive conversion, data movement, precision, and integration costs.
