The controls behind the shortcuts
These keys operate the same controls exposed by the player interface. Play starts the selected playlist item, Pause suspends the current item, and Stop ends playback. Previous and Next move through playlist entries. Shuffle randomizes the order, while Repeat Playlist repeats the playlist indefinitely. Mute silences audio, Play/Pause toggles between the two states, Full Screen enlarges video to the display, and Volume Up or Volume Down changes audio output.
Shortcuts worth memorizing first
- Playback: Ctrl+P, Ctrl+S, Ctrl+B, Ctrl+F, Ctrl+Shift+B, and Ctrl+Shift+F.
- Audio: F7, F8, and F9.
- Video: Ctrl+Shift+C for subtitles and Alt+Enter or F11 for full screen.
- Speed: Ctrl+Shift+G, Ctrl+Shift+N, and Ctrl+Shift+S.
Why a shortcut may not work
Windows Media Player does not have focus
Click the player window or use Alt+Tab to give it focus, then press the shortcut again. A search field, playlist entry, or another application can intercept the keystroke.

You are in a different player mode
Library, full-screen, and skin views expose different commands. A key that works in the Library may do nothing in video view, and some menu commands are available only in full screen.
The media does not provide the requested feature
Subtitle toggling requires a supported subtitle track. Rewind, fast-forward, and speed changes can also vary by file type and codec.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 availability
Microsoft identifies Windows Media Player Legacy as an optional feature on Windows 10 and Windows 11. On Windows 11, install it through Settings > System > Optional Features > View features, search for Windows Media Player Legacy, select it, and complete the installation. These shortcuts target that Legacy player, not necessarily the newer Media Player app.

Microsoft Learn labels the Windows Media Player SDK as legacy and states that skins will no longer be supported in Windows Media Player Legacy beginning November 10, 2026, on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later. That change affects the skin interface; it does not establish that every playback shortcut will disappear. Recheck behavior after major Windows or player updates.

How to test a shortcut safely
- Open Windows Media Player Legacy and load a short, nonessential media file or playlist.
- Click the player so it has focus.
- Press one shortcut at a time and watch the playback controls, volume indicator, subtitle state, or view change.
- For Library commands, select an item first; F2, F6, Shift+F6, and similar keys depend on the selected view or entry.
- If nothing happens, try the equivalent menu command and check whether another control currently has keyboard focus.
