Use the Java runtime required by the exact Minecraft server release. Java 17 covers Minecraft 1.18 through 1.20.4, while Minecraft 1.20.5 and later require Java 21 in the documented compatibility map. For a 1.21 server, Java 21 is the practical baseline. Always confirm the server implementation’s own release notes before upgrading, because newer lines can raise the requirement again.

Java requirements at a glance
The Java version is a compatibility floor, not a performance rating. A server JAR built for a newer Java release will not start on an older runtime, even if the computer itself is powerful enough. Conversely, installing the newest Java available does not guarantee that every legacy mod, plugin, or loader will work with it.

The table describes minimums. If Paper, Spigot, a mod loader, or a hosting provider names a tested Java distribution or patch level, follow that project guidance rather than treating the minimum as a universal recommendation.
How to identify the version your server actually uses
Do not choose Java from the version of the Minecraft client alone. Identify the server JAR or server profile you will launch. A filename such as server-1.20.1.jar, a launcher profile, or a hosting panel’s software selector normally exposes the exact release. Modified JARs can include a project name instead of a plain version, so check that project’s compatibility page when the filename is ambiguous.

Record all of the components that must agree:
- the Minecraft release, such as 1.20.1 or 1.21.1;
- the server implementation, such as vanilla, Paper, or Spigot;
- the mod loader and mods, if the server is modded;
- the plugins and their supported Minecraft and Java versions; and
- the operating system and the account or service that will launch Java.
This inventory prevents a common mistake: installing Java 21 because the server is “1.21-era” while accidentally launching an older world with a legacy mod pack that was only tested on Java 8 or 17.
Specific answers for common Minecraft releases
Does Minecraft 1.20.1 need Java 17?
Yes. Minecraft 1.20.1 falls within the 1.18–1.20.4 range, whose documented minimum is Java 17. A Java 17 runtime is therefore the compatibility baseline for a 1.20.1 server. If your mod pack or server software documents another tested runtime, use that documented choice; do not change Java merely because a newer release exists.
Do you need Java 21 for a 1.21 server?
For the 1.21 family, Java 21 is the practical baseline. The same runtime also covers the documented Java requirement for Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer. Confirm the exact server build, especially when using a snapshot, a fork, or a future release whose documentation may raise the baseline.
What about Minecraft 1.20.6?
Paper’s compatibility guidance specifically identifies Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.6. Running Paper 1.20.6 with Java 17 can produce a startup failure even though Java 17 works for earlier 1.20 releases.

Vanilla, Paper and Spigot do not share one permanent rule
Vanilla server
Vanilla follows the Java baseline associated with the Minecraft release. Mojang’s server documentation states: “For Java Edition: You must have a compatible Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed to launch the server .jar file.” The runtime must also be available from the command line; on Windows, that can require adding Java to PATH.
Paper
Paper is version-specific, so its build documentation is authoritative for the precise release. For example, Paper identifies Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.6. Treat a Paper requirement as applying to that Paper build, not automatically to every older or newer Paper version.

Spigot’s installation guidance likewise tells operators to use Java compatible with the Minecraft version. Its current site result lists Java 25 or later for Minecraft 26.1. That is a project and release statement, not a reason to move every existing server to Java 25. Check the exact Spigot build you intend to run and keep the runtime aligned with its documentation.
Paper and Spigot can use the same Java installation as vanilla when they target the same Minecraft generation and their plugins support that runtime. “Same Java” means the same major runtime is suitable; it does not mean every plugin stack is interchangeable.

JRE or JDK: which one should a server owner install?
Launching a compiled server JAR requires a Java Runtime Environment. A JRE supplies the runtime needed to execute the server. A Java Development Kit also includes that runtime plus compiler and development tools.
- Choose a JRE when you only need to run vanilla, Paper, Spigot, or a compiled modded server.
- Choose a JDK when you build plugins, compile mods, develop server software, or use administration tools that explicitly require development utilities.
- If a hosting provider supplies Java, you normally do not install either package yourself; verify which major version the host exposes.
The important distinction is not the label on the download page but the major Java version and the executable that the server process actually invokes.

Set up and verify the correct Java runtime
Use this sequence for a self-hosted server. It applies whether you start the JAR manually, with a script, or as an operating-system service.
- Identify the server release. Read the JAR filename, launcher profile, or hosting panel and note the exact Minecraft and implementation versions.
- Check the project requirement. Match the release to the version map above, then read the vanilla, Paper, Spigot, mod-loader, and plugin notes for any stricter requirement.
- Install a supported JRE or JDK. Install the major version that meets the requirement. Keep an older runtime available if a separate legacy server still depends on it.
- Open the same environment used to start the server. In a terminal, run
java -version. This is essential when a service account, container, scheduled task, or control panel starts the server rather than your desktop account. - Confirm the executable path if more than one Java is installed. The version reported by the launch environment must be the one intended for this server. A correct installation can appear “missing” when PATH still points to an older Java directory.
- Start the server with an explicit command or script. A typical launch command is
java -jar server.jar; use the real JAR filename and the memory options recommended for your setup. Do not assume that opening the JAR by double-clicking uses the same Java shown in your terminal. - Read the first startup lines. Confirm the reported Java version and stop if the server, loader, or plugins report an unsupported runtime.
On Windows, PATH configuration is a frequent issue. On Linux or macOS, shell profiles, systemd units, Docker images, and control-panel services can each define a different PATH. Run java -version inside the service or container context when possible, not only in your personal shell.

Fixing “UnsupportedClassVersionError”
This error means that Java is trying to load a class compiled for a newer Java release than the runtime currently executing it. In practical terms, the server JAR, a mod, or a plugin needs a newer Java than the command found on PATH.

- Read the error’s “compiled by a more recent version” wording and identify which JAR was being loaded.
- Check the Minecraft and server implementation version against the compatibility table.
- Run
java -versionin the exact launch context. - Install or select the required major version, then update PATH, the startup script, the service unit, container image, or hosting-panel setting.
- Restart the server and verify the Java version in the startup log.
If only a mod or plugin triggers it
The base server may be compatible while one add-on was compiled for a newer Java. Check that add-on’s release notes, install a version built for your runtime, or move the entire stack to the newer Java only after confirming that the remaining mods and plugins support it. Randomly replacing one JAR rarely fixes a mixed-version stack.
Minimum compatibility versus a tested runtime
“Java 17 or newer” does not promise that Java 22, 23, or a later release will work with every old plugin. The minimum tells you the lowest supported floor for that release. Project-tested versions reflect what maintainers have validated with their libraries, launch scripts, and integrations.
Use this decision rule:
- New server, current software: choose the project’s recommended long-term-support major version, such as Java 21 for the documented 1.20.5–1.21 era.
- Established mod pack or plugin collection: keep the runtime already tested by that collection unless an upgrade is required for a security or compatibility fix.
- Multiple servers on one machine: install multiple Java majors and point each startup script to its own executable instead of forcing every server onto one global PATH entry.
- Future or unusual release: defer to the exact server build’s release notes. The Java 25 requirement reported for Spigot 26.1 illustrates why a version map cannot remain permanent.
Local hosting versus managed hosting
On a home or rented virtual machine, you control Java installation, PATH, memory settings, firewall rules, backups, and updates. Mojang notes that external players may also require port forwarding and firewall configuration. Java selection is only one part of making the server reachable.
A managed host may preinstall compatible Java and expose a version selector, reducing PATH and operating-system work. You still need to choose the correct Minecraft/server build and verify what Java the host actually runs. A host’s “latest Java” option can be wrong for an older mod pack, so retain the project’s compatibility requirement when opening a support ticket or changing plans.

Upgrading Java, Minecraft and worlds safely
Change one major variable at a time. Before changing Java, the server implementation, or the Minecraft release, stop the server cleanly and create a complete backup of the world, configuration files, plugin or mod directories, and startup scripts.
- Test the new runtime with a copy of the world rather than the only production copy.
- Check plugin and mod compatibility before allowing players to connect.
- Keep the previous Java installation and launch command until the new combination has started successfully and passed a join test.
- Document which Java executable each server uses so a system update does not silently redirect it.
Mojang’s 1.21.1 notice recommends that server owners upgrade to that release to address critical exploits and says players on 1.21 can join 1.21.1 servers. Security updates can therefore justify a coordinated server upgrade, but backups and compatibility checks remain necessary.
