Making your whole computer “Vim” does not mean installing one setting that turns every app into Vim. It means assembling a keyboard-first workflow in layers: use a modal editor for text, a browser extension for web navigation, any built-in Vim-style modes individual apps offer, and operating-system or window-manager shortcuts for switching and arranging apps. Each layer has its own coverage and key behavior.
What “Vim everywhere” means in practice
Vim is a text editor; “Vim everywhere” is shorthand for applying some of its keyboard-driven habits beyond editing. The practical target is fewer trips to the mouse and more consistent keyboard navigation—not identical Vim behavior in every program. A browser extension can handle browser commands, for example, but that does not make an unrelated desktop app or every text-entry field Vim-aware.

Think of the setup as separate scopes:
- Text editing: Vim or another modal editor for files and code.
- Web browsing: a browser extension that adds keyboard-based navigation and control.
- Individual applications: app-specific modes or bindings, if the application provides them.
- Desktop navigation: operating-system or window-manager shortcuts for launching, switching, and arranging apps.
Compatibility and conflicts depend on the particular application, extension, and operating environment. The available documentation does not establish a universal tool that imposes Vim modes system-wide.
How modes change what keys do
In a modal editor, a key’s meaning depends on the active mode. A key may move a selection or issue a command in one mode and insert a character in another. This separation is the central idea to understand before trying to reproduce Vim-like control elsewhere.

Normal and Insert modes
Kakoune’s documentation offers a clear example: it starts in Normal mode, where commands select and manipulate text. Insert mode is for entering text; pressing Escape returns to Normal mode. Other applications may use different modes, transitions, or key vocabularies, so do not assume Escape or a particular command works the same way everywhere.
Other task-specific modes
Kakoune also documents Goto and View modes for navigation and viewing commands, Prompt mode for entering a command or search string, and Object mode for text objects. These illustrate how modes can group related actions; they are not a universal feature set that every Vim-inspired tool implements.

Vim-like editors are not necessarily Vim-identical
Kakoune is a modal editor that puts multiple selections at the center of its interaction model. Its design differs from Vim in more than naming: Kakoune describes a selection-first approach, while Vim is associated with a verb-then-object command grammar. That distinction affects how a user selects text and then acts on it; it does not establish that one approach is faster or more productive.

- Does it provide only navigation keys, or also modes, operators, text objects, and configurable bindings?
- How does it represent a selection, and when do edits become visible?
- Which parts of Vim’s command language does it support?
- What happens in text fields, and can keys be passed through or Escape the mode?
Kakoune’s official site describes its modal, multiple-selection design, while its design essay explains its interaction choices. Those are useful examples of a distinct modal grammar, not evidence of full Vim compatibility.
Use a browser extension for web navigation
Vimium is a bounded, concrete example outside a text editor. Its project README describes it as “a browser extension that provides keyboard-based navigation and control of the web in the spirit of the Vim editor.” It documents configurable keybindings and says its help can be opened by pressing ?. Its project documentation lists installation paths for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.

Vimium’s scope is browser navigation and control of the web—not arbitrary desktop applications. Extension support and availability can change, so check the current Vimium project documentation and the relevant browser’s extension listing before installing. Do not assume the same bindings will work in every page element or input field; behavior depends on the extension and page context.

- Choose an editor. Use Vim if you want Vim itself, or another modal editor if its interaction model better fits you. Confirm the commands and modes you need are supported.
- Add browser controls. Install and configure a browser extension such as Vimium if its current browser support and behavior fit your needs. Use its help and settings to learn and adjust bindings.
- Check each frequent app. Look for built-in keyboard navigation or a documented Vim-style mode. Verify its bindings, text-field behavior, and compatibility instead of assuming a mode exists.
- Set desktop shortcuts separately. Configure your operating system or window manager for tasks such as launching apps, switching windows, and moving or arranging them. These are desktop shortcuts, not necessarily Vim modes.
- Resolve collisions deliberately. If two layers claim the same keys, change one layer’s bindings or choose a different shortcut. Test in ordinary text fields as well as navigation contexts.
The result is a coordinated keyboard-first setup, not a single shared command language. Whether the layers work together depends on the tools and platform you choose.

Learn Vim from its own documentation
Vim’s documentation index links to online help, a beginner tutor, and books. Its User Manual distinguishes two kinds of documentation: a task-oriented manual intended to be read from start to finish, and a Reference Manual that describes Vim precisely. The manual page identifies Vim 9.2 and says it was last changed February 14, 2026; that date describes the page, not a guarantee about every installed Vim build.
A printed option is vi and Vim Editors Pocket Reference, Second Edition, identified in a book preview as a printed reference. It can serve as an offline aid for commands and modes, but it is not a utility for controlling the desktop, and current retail availability is not established here.
