Current Xbox Wireless Controllers also include Bluetooth, so you can connect to an Xbox console with Xbox Wireless or use Bluetooth with supported PCs and mobile devices. A Windows PC can use Xbox Wireless through Microsoft’s separate Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.
What Xbox Wireless means
Xbox Wireless is the connection Microsoft uses for Xbox controllers and compatible accessories, including connecting a controller to an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. It is distinct from Bluetooth, even though current Xbox Wireless Controllers support both technologies. Microsoft describes the controller as including “XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth® technology for wireless gaming on console, PC, mobile phones and tablets” in its controller specifications.
A compatible controller can pair with and switch among Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, Android, and iOS devices. The exact behavior and available features depend on the controller model and host device or operating-system version.
How to connect an Xbox controller
Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One
Pair the controller with the console using Xbox Wireless. This is the controller’s native wireless connection for Xbox consoles.

Windows PC over Bluetooth
If your PC has Bluetooth and your controller model supports it, pair the controller as a Bluetooth device. Microsoft lists Bluetooth as the wireless connection for Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs, as well as tablets and supported iOS and Android devices.
Windows PC over Xbox Wireless
To use Xbox Wireless with a Windows PC that does not have built-in Xbox Wireless, connect Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows to a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port, then pair the controller with the adapter. Microsoft says the adapter works with Xbox Wireless Controllers on Windows PCs and tablets and can connect up to eight controllers at once. Its Microsoft Store listing currently marks it “Out of stock”; availability can change.

USB cable
A compatible USB-C cable provides a wired connection between the controller and a compatible Windows PC or Xbox console. Microsoft notes that some Windows features may require a compatible cable. Check the requirements for the specific feature or device you plan to use.
Xbox Wireless vs. Bluetooth
These are two different connection methods, not two names for the same technology. Choose based on the host device, controller support, and any feature you need:

| Connection method | Compatible hosts listed by Microsoft | Extra hardware | Controller count or feature note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Wireless | Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One | No adapter needed for an Xbox console; a Windows PC without built-in Xbox Wireless needs Microsoft’s adapter to use this connection | Microsoft’s adapter supports up to eight controllers at once on compatible Windows PCs and tablets |
| Bluetooth | Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, iOS, and Android devices, subject to device and controller compatibility | A Bluetooth-capable host and a compatible controller | Microsoft does not state an exact controller count in the cited controller specification |

Bluetooth is often the simplest wireless route for a PC or phone that supports it. The adapter is specifically for using Xbox Wireless with a compatible Windows PC or tablet. Do not assume every controller feature or accessory works over Bluetooth; check support for your exact controller, host, and feature in Microsoft’s controller specifications.
Do you need the Xbox Wireless Adapter for PC?
No, not if you are happy to connect over Bluetooth and your PC and controller both support it. You need the adapter if you want to use Xbox Wireless on a Windows PC that lacks built-in Xbox Wireless. The adapter plugs into USB 2.0 or USB 3.0; Microsoft’s listing says it can connect up to eight controllers. The adapter’s current stock status is shown on the Microsoft Store product page.

Power and battery life
The current Xbox Wireless Controller uses AA batteries. Microsoft rates battery life at up to 40 hours, but says it varies significantly with headset use, additional accessories, usage, and other factors. Treat that figure as a maximum under Microsoft’s product-specification conditions, not a guaranteed runtime for every setup. A compatible rechargeable battery pack is another practical power option; it does not change which wireless connection you use.

Microsoft’s cited controller and adapter pages do not provide a current exact wireless range or latency figure. Avoid relying on an unsourced distance or response-time number when choosing between Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless; the official specifications establish compatibility and connection options, not a universal performance guarantee.
