Microsoft says it is being designed to play both Xbox console games and PC games—a broader gaming target than a traditional console’s console-focused library. Helix is still in development, and Microsoft has not announced a consumer release date, price, full specifications, or which PC stores and games it will support.
What is Xbox Project Helix?
Microsoft describes Project Helix as its next-generation first-party Xbox console. The name is a codename, not a confirmed retail product name. In its March 11, 2026 announcement, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald said Helix is designed to play “your Xbox console and PC games.” Microsoft’s Xbox Wire announcement and its developer-facing GDC update confirm the broad direction.

That statement establishes the intended categories of games, not that every PC game will work, or that Helix will provide access to every PC storefront. Microsoft has not yet described the specific game eligibility rules, installation process, storefronts, or account requirements.
How is Project Helix different from a traditional console?
The main announced difference is the intended game library. Traditional consoles generally center on games made available for their console ecosystem. Helix is intended to add PC games to Xbox console games. This is a design goal, not confirmation that the system will function like an unrestricted gaming PC or run any particular store.

| Comparison | What Microsoft has said about Helix | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Game library | Designed to play Xbox console and PC games. | Which PC games qualify, which storefronts are supported, and whether games require specific editions or accounts. |
| Hardware | Uses a custom AMD SoC and is being co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. | Processor and graphics models, memory, storage, ports, resolution targets, and independent performance results. |
| Graphics performance | Microsoft says it is targeting an “order of magnitude leap” in ray-tracing performance and capability. | A defined measurement, test conditions, or benchmark results. The phrase is Microsoft’s qualitative claim, not an independently measured result. |
| Older Xbox games | Microsoft says it remains committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable for years to come. | A Helix-specific list of supported games and the conditions for compatibility, including disc support. |
| Release and price | No consumer launch date or price is stated in the official materials cited here. | Retail timing and pricing. |
| Controllers and accessories | No existing controller or accessory compatibility is confirmed in the announcement. | Which current or older accessories, if any, will work. |
Microsoft’s broader strategy is to make the Xbox experience more consistent across screens and reduce barriers between console and PC games. In the same March 2026 announcement, it said Xbox mode would begin rolling out to Windows 11 in April 2026, starting in select markets. Microsoft described Xbox mode as a full-screen, controller-optimized experience that retains Windows’ openness. That Windows feature provides context for the strategy, but it does not establish that Helix itself will be a general-purpose Windows desktop.
Will the next Xbox play PC games?
Microsoft says Helix is designed to play PC games, so the broad ambition is confirmed. The practical scope is not: Microsoft has not named supported PC storefronts, confirmed access to all PC games, or explained how installation and accounts will work. It is too early to treat Helix as a replacement for a gaming PC or to assume that a game available on PC will automatically run on the console.

Microsoft also reported on March 11, 2026 that Xbox Play Anywhere covered more than 1,500 games and that 500 development teams had shipped games with the feature. Those are Microsoft’s figures for that date; they describe Play Anywhere, not a list of games confirmed for Helix.
What hardware and backward compatibility are confirmed?
Custom AMD hardware, without a published specification sheet
Microsoft says Helix uses a custom AMD system-on-chip (SoC) and is being co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. It has not published component models, memory or storage capacity, ports, or independent benchmarks in the cited announcement. The “order of magnitude” ray-tracing language describes Microsoft’s target; without a defined comparison or test, it should not be read as a measured performance figure.

A four-generation commitment, but no Helix catalog yet
Microsoft says it remains committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable for years to come. The announcement does not provide a complete list of games for Helix or explain compatibility conditions. The generation count is a commitment, not confirmation that every title, disc, or accessory from those generations will work on the new system.
When will Project Helix come out?
Microsoft has not announced a consumer release date or price in the cited official materials. It plans to begin shipping alpha versions of the hardware to developers in 2027. That is a development milestone for studios, not a retail launch window; it does not establish when consumers will be able to buy Helix.

What is still unknown before a comparison with current consoles is possible?
The announced goal is clear, but the details needed for a practical buying comparison are not. Microsoft has not yet specified the supported PC libraries, storefront and account rules, game-by-game compatibility, detailed performance, accessory support, price, or consumer launch timing. Until those details are available, claims that Helix will run every PC game, replace a desktop PC, or work with a particular existing accessory go beyond what Microsoft has confirmed.
