x402 is an open protocol for requesting and making payments through ordinary HTTP interactions. An API server can answer a request with HTTP 402 Payment Required and its accepted payment terms; a client can then submit a payment payload, which the server or a facilitator checks before providing the resource. x402 standardizes that exchange, not the underlying payment network or every implementation detail.
What x402 does—and what “HTTP-native” means
HTTP already defines the status code 402 Payment Required, but leaves its use for payment systems open. x402 uses that response as part of a shared negotiation pattern between a resource server and a client. The server communicates what payment it accepts; the client responds with payment data; and the implementation verifies and settles payment as required.

“HTTP-native” refers to how the payment challenge and response fit into web requests. HTTP itself does not move funds. An x402 integration may still rely on a blockchain, wallet or signer, network, fees, credentials, and supporting services. The protocol supports extensible payment schemes and networks, rather than requiring one universal settlement option. See the x402 v2 specification and the project repository.
How an x402 API payment flow works
- Request: A client asks an HTTP resource server for an API resource.
- Payment challenge: If the client does not already know the payment terms, the server may respond with HTTP 402 and the requirements it accepts.
- Payment payload: The client chooses an offered requirement and constructs a payload for its scheme and network.
- Retry: The client repeats the request with that payment payload.
- Check and fulfillment: The resource server checks the payment locally or through a facilitator. The implementation determines the verification and settlement sequence and when the resource is returned.
A discovery round trip is not essential in every case: a client that already knows a resource’s payment details may be able to send a payload without first receiving a 402 challenge. The x402 repository describes the typical flow, while the specification defines the protocol exchange.

What a facilitator does
A facilitator offers verification and settlement operations so a resource server can delegate blockchain-specific work. It is an architectural role, not necessarily a third-party service: a team may use a managed facilitator, run one separately, or self-facilitate. The Solana facilitator guide describes these operating choices and a /supported capability-discovery endpoint. The x402 v2 specification describes /verify and settlement interfaces.
The trust and operational implications depend on the implementation. A server integrating x402 should establish who operates the facilitator, which versions, schemes, networks, and signers it supports, what happens when verification or settlement fails, and whether payment is tied to the particular resource being delivered. A facilitator’s response is part of that system’s design; the protocol alone does not settle these implementation questions.

Versions and brief history
Coinbase announced x402 on May 6, 2025, describing it as an open standard using HTTP 402 to embed stablecoin payments in web interactions. A whitepaper published the same day under Coinbase Developer Platform / x402 lists Erik Reppel, Ronnie Caspers, Kevin Leffew, Danny Organ, Dan Kim, and Nemil Dalal as authors. Its version-history entry notes CAIP-2 network identifiers, restructured payment requirements and payloads, separation of ResourceInfo, and extensions support. It describes the core protocol as transport-agnostic, while facilitator APIs are currently standardized as HTTP endpoints. These details matter when checking whether a client and server that both use “x402” actually support compatible versions and capabilities.

Security: what to check in an implementation
A protocol-level payment challenge is not proof by itself that a payment is valid or that the requested resource is safe to release. A 2026 arXiv preprint, “When HTTP 402 Meets the Blockchain: Risks on Emerging x402 Payments”, examines facilitator-mediated deployments and reports potential authorization-correctness and execution-safety failures. The study discusses replay and validity checks, whether a facilitator reports a valid settlement, and whether a submitted transaction matches the authorized payment. Those are findings attributed to that study, not established defects in every x402 deployment.

- Verification and settlement failures, including whether the server releases the resource before the required checks complete.
- Facilitator responses and the controls used to establish that reported verification or settlement corresponds to the payment the client authorized.
For example, Coinbase’s facilitator API documents a versioned verification endpoint and a specific request format in its Verify payment API reference. That is one implementation’s interface, not a universal x402 endpoint. Consult the selected network and facilitator documentation, and test failure cases in the integration you intend to use.

These are not fixed x402-wide values. They must be checked against the specific implementation and its documentation.
When x402 may fit an API
x402 is relevant when a service wants an HTTP-based way to present payment requirements and accept payment payloads as part of a web request flow. It can reduce the need for a separate payment interaction in some integrations, but it does not guarantee that a client needs no wallet or signer, or that the service has no network, fee, credential, or operational requirements. Those depend on the scheme, network, and implementation chosen.
