It can be deployed on premises, in cloud or edge environments, or in restricted and offline settings. That control comes with operational responsibility: you plan and manage the server, network access, upgrades, and licensing. If you do not want to operate streaming infrastructure, compare it with a managed service instead.
What does Wowza Streaming Engine do?
A streaming server sits between media sources and viewers. Engine can receive live or file-based video, process or transcode it, package it, and deliver it using streaming protocols. Wowza describes it as a Java-based platform for single-bitrate and adaptive-bitrate live and on-demand video. Its product components include the server, a web-based Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, a Java API, and a REST API for configuration, management, monitoring, and extension. Wowza also describes workflows for live streaming, video on demand (VOD), low-latency delivery, and large-scale distribution, alongside configurable APIs, modules, DRM and stream-protection options, clustering, and edge servers. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular configuration meets a latency, security, compliance, or resilience target; validate the design against your requirements.

It may fit when you need control over deployment
Evaluate Engine if your organization needs to operate streaming software in its own environment, retain infrastructure control, or customize how media is processed and delivered. Wowza documents on-premises, cloud, stand-alone, clustered, edge, behind-firewall, and offline deployment options. This flexibility can matter when infrastructure location or network restrictions are part of the requirements.

It may not fit when you want someone else to run the infrastructure
With Engine, your team must account for server provisioning, networking and firewall rules, upgrades, licensing, and capacity planning. Wowza contrasts Engine’s configurable self-hosted approach with Wowza Video, its fully managed option. Compare the operations model, required integrations, deployment constraints, latency needs, security requirements, scaling plan, and total cost; there is no universal best choice for every workload.
Where can you deploy Wowza Streaming Engine?
Wowza documents deployment on an organization’s own hardware as well as in cloud environments. It also describes stand-alone instances, clusters, edge servers, behind-firewall use, and offline operation. On-premises customers deploy on their own hardware; marketplace options include preconfigured offerings through AWS and Azure and a paid container on Google Cloud Marketplace. Marketplace providers handle usage billing, and licensing is embedded in those listings, but cloud resources and provider charges should be checked separately. The deployment location does not remove the need to plan network access. Wowza’s technical requirements list default ports that may need to be available through firewalls:

- TCP 1935: several streaming protocols.
- TCP 8086–8088: administration.
- UDP 6970–9999: RTP.
- TCP 80: HLS, MPEG-DASH, and RTMPT; inbound and outbound HTTP on this port must also be allowed for license validation.
- TCP 443: TLS-based streaming, HTTPS, and WebRTC.
- TCP 554: RTSP.
These are documented defaults, not a substitute for checking the selected configuration and current requirements. The technical specifications page was updated July 15, 2026; consult Wowza’s current technical specifications before provisioning.
What are the technical requirements?
Wowza says the current Engine build is compiled using OpenJDK Java SE JRE 17.0.12 and supports Java 17 or 21; Java 21 is certified and optimized. Listed operating systems include Red Hat, Ubuntu, and SuSE Linux distributions, plus Windows 10/11 and Windows Server 2019/2022. Listed architectures include Linux x86_64 and ARM64, but not 32-bit ARM. Confirm the current compatibility list for your intended installation and transcoding workflow.

Actual capacity depends on bitrate, network capacity, and hardware. Size a system using the codecs, resolutions, frame rates, transcoding profiles, expected simultaneous workloads, and network design you intend to run rather than inferring a viewer count from the general recommendations.

Does it support live streaming and VOD?
Yes. Wowza describes Engine as supporting both live and on-demand workflows. Its technical specifications list RTMP, RTSP/RTP, SRT, and WebRTC among supported live input protocols. Which input, output, and packaging protocols are suitable depends on the workflow and configuration; check the current specifications before designing around a specific protocol.
How does licensing and cost work?
As displayed on Wowza’s pricing page on October 3, 2026, the one-month option is $295 as a one-time purchase, while Basic Monthly is $195 per month. Each lists one included instance and up to 10 concurrent transcoded channels. Additional transcoded channels are listed at $25 each, billed in full-month increments based on the monthly high-water mark. Enterprise pricing is custom. These prices and terms can change; verify the current Wowza pricing page before purchase.

Wowza defines an instance as one copy of the server software on one physical or virtual computer. Its pricing FAQ says subscription usage is based on the maximum number of concurrent instances during the billing cycle. A transcoder channel is an inbound live stream processed by the Transcoder. Do not treat source streams, transcoded channels, and output renditions as interchangeable: one input channel can produce multiple output streams at different resolutions. For a self-hosted deployment, the software license is only part of the budget. Include compute, network capacity, any CDN or delivery services, and the staff time needed to operate and maintain the system. A cloud marketplace listing may add provider usage charges; review those separately from the software terms.

- Operations: Who will install, configure, monitor, upgrade, and troubleshoot the server?
- Location and restrictions: Must media processing happen on premises, at the edge, in a public or private cloud, behind a firewall, or offline?
- Protocols: Do the required sources and viewers use protocols supported by the intended Engine configuration?
- Media workflow: What latency, transcoding, adaptive-bitrate, and VOD behavior do you need, and how will you validate it?
- Customization and protection: Which integrations, APIs, modules, DRM, or stream-protection controls are required?
- Capacity and licensing: How many instances and concurrent transcoded channels will the design use? How many output renditions will each input produce?
- Total cost: Have you included servers or cloud resources, networking, delivery, licensing, and engineering operations?
Wowza does not publish a universal break-even point between self-hosting and managed streaming. The right comparison is the full cost and operational burden of a design that meets your requirements, not the software price alone.
