Wireless power transfer (WPT) is the delivery of electrical energy from a power source to a device or other load without a direct conductive connection. It uses electromagnetic fields or radiation to move energy across a gap. Wireless phone charging is one familiar example, but WPT also covers other methods and applications, including electric-vehicle charging.
How does wireless power transfer work?
WPT is a family of technologies, not a single charger design. The source converts electrical energy into an electromagnetic field or radiation; a receiver captures that energy and converts it back into electrical power for a load. The method, distance, power level, and hardware depend on the application.

Inductive transfer
In an inductive system, alternating current in a transmitter coil creates a changing magnetic field. A nearby receiver coil picks up that field and generates electrical current. This is the principle behind many contact-based wireless charging pads.

Resonant systems tune the transmitter and receiver circuits to a shared frequency. This can support transfer across a greater separation than tightly coupled charging surfaces, although performance still depends on the system design and conditions.

- Output current of receiving module: 5V/1000mA; Operating voltage of the transmitting module: 5V~12V
- Transmitter module size: 17mm*11mm*2.3mm; Transmitting and receiving coil size: Outer diameter 40mm thickness 1.8mm
- This product is designed for wireless charging and power supply for various small electronic products. It has the characteristics of small size, easy to use, and high efficiency
- Due to the use of a contactless charging power supply, the product can be completely sealed, waterproof, and dustproof, increasing its service life and making it more convenient to use
- It is mainly applicable to mobile electronic products such as mobile phones, game consoles, fish tanks, digital cameras, Electric shavers, learning machines, underwater supplies, and other products
Far-field transfer
Far-field systems send energy as electromagnetic radiation, such as radio-frequency or microwave energy. They raise different engineering questions from close-range inductive charging, particularly around direction, distance, and how much power the receiver captures.
What are the main applications?
Consumer-device charging
Qi is a widely adopted specification for contact-based inductive charging. A Qi-compatible pad or stand is a practical example of WPT, but compatibility is not automatic: check that both the charger and the device support a compatible standard and configuration. A generic wireless charger will not necessarily charge every phone.

Light-duty electric vehicles
Wireless EV charging uses related principles at much higher power and requires application-specific criteria. The ANSI Webstore listing for SAE J2954-2024 describes three charging levels up to 11 kVA, with future revisions potentially extending to 22 kVA. Those are figures for the standard listing’s edition-specific scope, not a claim that every vehicle or installed charging system supports those levels. SAE J2954 addresses interoperability, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), electromagnetic-field (EMF) exposure, minimum performance, safety, and testing.

For historical context, an ITU-R report published in 2021 describes the 2020 SAE J2954 context as using the 85 kHz band (79–90 kHz) for light-duty vehicle systems up to 11.1 kW. That historical description should not be treated as a substitute for checking the current SAE edition and its requirements.

- The transmission voltage is designed with a wide voltage: 12V~24V.
- Transmitter module size: 17*28mm; Transmitting coil: outer diameter 88mm.
- Receiver module size: 15mm*30mm; Receiver coil size: outer diameter 88mm.
- Sensing distance: Receive output 5V2A at 20mm; Receive output 5V100mA at 70mm.
- Note: The distance between the two coils need greater than 13mm!
Heavy-duty vehicles
SAE J2954/2 concerns higher-power wireless transfer for heavy-duty EV applications. SAE describes it as an information report and an initial step, noting that field data and additional work are needed for aspects of static and dynamic transfer. It should not be read as a complete deployment specification.

There is no single useful range or efficiency figure for all wireless power transfer. A system’s performance depends on its design and use case. When comparing implementations, the relevant factors include:
Rank #4
- Distance and alignment: How far apart the transmitter and receiver can be, and how accurately they must line up.
- Power and losses: The amount of energy delivered to the load and the energy lost during conversion and transfer.
- Receiver size: The space available for the receiving coil or other capture hardware.
- Safety and electromagnetic compatibility: Whether the system meets criteria appropriate to its application and operating environment.
- Interoperability: Whether the source and receiver are designed to work together under a shared specification.
These trade-offs explain why a method suited to a phone on a charging pad is not automatically suitable for an EV, and why performance claims should be tied to a specific design and operating condition.
