Windows Imaging Format (WIM) is Microsoft’s file-based format for capturing and deploying Windows images. A WIM can hold one or more images of Windows partitions, which administrators can apply to prepared target partitions with Microsoft’s DISM tool. It does not, by itself, create every partition needed on a disk.
What a WIM file contains
A WIM is a deployment image container, not a complete description of a computer’s entire disk. Microsoft’s deployment documentation states that “WIM files only capture a single partition.” A deployment may therefore need separate steps to prepare system, recovery, or other partitions. Microsoft’s capture-and-apply guidance describes that partition-based workflow.

A single WIM can also contain multiple image entries, such as different Windows editions or configurations. If those images share files, Microsoft says the duplicate files are stored only once, potentially reducing storage compared with keeping each image in a separate WIM. DISM can list the images in a WIM and select one by index or name. Microsoft documents these image operations.
How WIM is used to deploy Windows
A typical deployment captures an installation into a WIM, prepares a target device’s disk layout, applies a selected image to its Windows partition, then configures boot files. When preparing an installation for deployment to other devices, Microsoft’s example uses Sysprep to generalize the installation before capture. The documented process uses DISM commands such as /Capture-Image and /Apply-Image; it is an administrative deployment workflow, not a one-click backup-and-restore feature.

- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
- Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
- Prepare the installation. Generalize a Windows installation with Sysprep when capturing it for deployment to other devices.
- Capture the partition. Boot to Windows PE and use DISM’s
/Capture-Imageoperation to save the Windows partition as a WIM file. - Prepare the target disk. Create the required partitions before applying the image; the WIM does not set up the whole disk.
- Apply the image and configure startup. Use DISM’s
/Apply-Imageoperation to apply the chosen image to the target Windows partition, then configure boot files.
DISM can also append an image to an existing WIM or export an image to a separate WIM. For exact command syntax and deployment examples, see Microsoft’s single-WIM capture and apply guide and its documentation on appending, applying, and exporting volume images.
WIM versus FFU
WIM and FFU (Full Flash Update) serve different deployment needs. WIM captures a partition; FFU captures full-drive contents. Microsoft groups WIM, FFU, and VHD as Windows image file formats, and recommends FFU for factory-floor deployment because it is faster to apply. The cited guidance does not quantify the speed difference, so it should not be read as a universal benchmark for every device or deployment.

| Format | What the image represents | Documented use |
|---|---|---|
| WIM | A single partition per image | Windows Setup installs from WIM; deployment scripts can use WIM. |
| FFU | Full-drive contents | Deployment scripts can use FFU; Microsoft recommends it for factory-floor application speed. |
These distinctions are described in Microsoft’s FFU deployment guidance. The documentation does not provide a full binary-format comparison or a measured speed ratio.
WIM data images and storage
A WIM can also carry a data image used during Windows installation to add files, applications, scripts, and other resources. Microsoft cautions that data images are for adding files, not replacing existing Windows files. This makes them distinct from using a captured Windows partition as the operating-system image. See Microsoft’s guidance on adding a data image.

A captured WIM can be saved to a USB flash drive or another file-storage location in Microsoft’s example. A USB drive is one possible destination, not a required accessory; that guidance does not specify a required capacity, speed, or model. The capture guide shows the storage context.
