An application obtains or selects media, negotiates a connection through signaling, and uses ICE to find a network route. Media then travels securely—directly when possible, through a relay when needed, or via a forwarding server in many multi-party setups.
What is WebRTC live streaming?
WebRTC is not one hosted streaming service or a single protocol. It is a coordinated set of browser-facing APIs and network protocols for real-time communication. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) describes its purpose this way: “The WebRTC 1.0 specification exposes an API to control protocols (defined within the IETF) necessary to establish real-time audio, video and data exchange.” W3C WebRTC Recommendation

The W3C defines the browser APIs, while the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) specifies transport and related protocols. In a video call or other interactive live session, an application uses these pieces to send and receive media between browsers or other compatible endpoints.
“Live streaming” can refer to different delivery patterns. A direct peer connection is suited to exchanging media between a small number of endpoints. Multi-party conferencing may use a Selective Forwarding Unit (SFU) to receive and forward participant streams. WebRTC itself does not require an SFU, guarantee a direct media path, or prescribe one signaling service.
#1 Best Overall
- Capture the moment: With sharp, vibrant 1080p resolution, every video call looks more natural, with better brightness, richer colors, and smoother motion. Whether you’re leading a meeting or catching up with family, they’ll see you exactly as they should.
- Be heard, loud, and clear: No more muffled audio or repeating yourself. With dual built-in microphones, your voice comes through clear, natural, and balanced—so whether you’re speaking softly or laughing out loud, you sound just right.
- Total privacy, in a snap: When you’re not on a call, just slide the built-in privacy shutter closed, and rest easy knowing your camera is completely off.
- Tilt Degree: -20°~10°; Monitor Thickness: 4 mm ~ 40 mm; Maximum Resolution: 1080P; Frame Rate: 30 fps; FOV: 85°
- Connection: USB-A 2.0; Cable Length: 1.8m Integrated Cable; Power Consumption: 5V/1A
How does real-time video work?
- Obtain or select media. An application can capture a camera and microphone or use another media source. WebRTC represents media using objects such as
MediaStreamTrack. - Add tracks to a peer connection. The application attaches tracks to an
RTCPeerConnection, the browser API object that manages sending and receiving media. - Exchange connection descriptions. The endpoints negotiate what media and connection parameters they can use. They must exchange offers, answers, and other negotiation messages through signaling.
- Gather and test network routes. ICE gathers connection candidates and exchanges them through signaling. The endpoints test compatible routes to find a usable path.
- Send media securely. Once a candidate pair works, media can flow. WebRTC uses secure RTP for media, with DTLS-SRTP for key exchange, as specified in IETF RFC 8835.
- Forward streams when needed. In a multi-party session, an SFU can forward participant streams to recipients instead of requiring each participant to send a separate stream directly to everyone else.
Signaling, ICE, STUN, and TURN: what each does
Signaling exchanges negotiation messages
Signaling is how an application gets connection descriptions and ICE candidates from one endpoint to another. WebRTC does not dictate the signaling transport or provide a universal signaling server. An application can route those messages using its own service; WebSocket is one possible transport. A signaling server can relay messages without interpreting their contents. See MDN’s signaling and video calling guide.
ICE searches for a workable route
ICE evaluates the available network paths and tests candidate pairs. It attempts connectivity; it does not promise that media will travel directly between endpoints.

STUN assists with address discovery
STUN helps an endpoint discover its network-facing address and restrictions. That information can help ICE identify a direct route, but a discovered address does not ensure that the route will work.
TURN relays media when direct connectivity fails
If the endpoints cannot establish a direct connection, ICE can use a TURN relay. Relaying is a valid WebRTC media path, not an exception that means the session is no longer WebRTC. A signaling server and a TURN relay serve different roles: signaling exchanges setup messages, while TURN relays media traffic when required. MDN explains these protocol roles in its WebRTC protocols overview.

Direct peer delivery or an SFU?
A direct connection and SFU-mediated delivery solve different distribution problems. The right design depends on the session and deployment; the cited specifications do not establish a universal participant-count threshold for switching architectures.
| Consideration | Direct peer delivery | SFU-mediated delivery |
|---|---|---|
| Media route | Endpoints exchange media directly when ICE finds a viable path; TURN may relay it. | An intermediary receives and forwards participant streams. |
| Recipient fan-out | As recipients are added, each sender may need to serve multiple recipients. | The SFU handles forwarding streams to recipients. |
| When it may fit | A small exchange where direct delivery is practical. | A multi-party conference where forwarding is useful. |
| Operational considerations | The application still needs signaling and may need TURN services. | The application needs signaling and may also need to host and operate an SFU and TURN services. |
Recipient network conditions and media needs also affect architecture decisions. The sources support these qualitative trade-offs, not a fixed crossover point, participant capacity, cost, bandwidth saving, or latency figure.

- QHD/FHD/HD resolution for exceptional video quality
- Sony sensor and f/2.0 aperture for vivid and clear visuals, even in low light
- Face detection feature ensures you stay in focus during calls
- Noise reduction mic for crisp and clear audio
- Microsoft Teams/Zoom certified for seamless integration with popular conferencing platforms
What WebRTC does not guarantee
- A direct media path: ICE may select a TURN relay, and a multi-party product may deliberately place an SFU in the media path.
- A particular signaling method: The application chooses how endpoints exchange negotiation messages.
- Fixed latency or quality: Those outcomes depend on the deployment and network conditions; the specifications alone do not support a universal performance promise.
- A particular product architecture: Calling something “WebRTC” does not tell you whether it uses direct connections, TURN, or an SFU. Check how that application routes signaling and media.
Keeping uploaded video live on YouTube is a different use case
WebRTC describes real-time exchange between compatible endpoints; it is not a service for looping uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube channel. If that is your goal, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos on YouTube, not a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your uploaded video at the quality you made it, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly plan is $9.99 per month.
Quick Recap
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo keeps the uploaded video looping from the cloud.
