What Is WebRTC? A Guide to Interactive Live Video

WebRTC combines browser APIs and real-time protocols for interactive calls, conferencing, and data transfer. Here’s how signaling and connection paths work.

WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) is a set of browser APIs and real-time protocols that lets compatible devices exchange audio, video, and application data. It powers interactive calls and conferencing, but it is not itself a video-calling service: an application still needs a way to coordinate the connection, and it may use additional network services to carry media.

What WebRTC means

WebRTC is short for Web Real-Time Communication. It brings together two related layers: APIs that let web applications work with real-time media and data, and protocols that let endpoints establish and maintain communication. The W3C defines the browser-facing APIs in its WebRTC Recommendation, dated 13 March 2025: WebRTC: Real-Time Communication in Browsers. The IETF describes the protocols in its January 2021 overview, RFC 8825.

As RFC 8826 puts it, “The major use cases for WebRTC technology are real-time audio and/or video calls, Web conferencing, and direct data transfer.” The quotation is from Eric Rescorla’s January 2021 IETF security-considerations document: RFC 8826.

What WebRTC can do

  • Audio and video calls: An application can send and receive live media between participants.
  • Web conferencing: WebRTC can support interactive meetings with multiple participants.
  • Direct data transfer: Applications can exchange generic data, not only sound or video.

WebRTC does not require a webcam. A camera or microphone can provide local media when needed, but the technology can also be used for audio-only communication or data exchange. A suitable built-in device may be enough; an external webcam is an optional peripheral, not a WebRTC requirement.

How a WebRTC connection works

1. The application gets the endpoints ready

The browser APIs let an application work with local media and set up real-time communication. The application determines what the participants intend to send or receive and coordinates the connection process.

2. Signaling exchanges setup information

Before endpoints can communicate, they need to exchange connection setup and control information. This process is called signaling. WebRTC does not prescribe one built-in signaling service; the application arranges it, often through its own service or another communication channel.

3. The endpoints establish a media or data path

Once setup information has been exchanged, the endpoints attempt to communicate. WebRTC’s protocol design aims for the most direct possible path between participants, but that is a goal, not a guarantee that every session will be a simple device-to-device connection. Real deployments may need additional network resources.

Signaling and the media path are distinct: they can use different systems. That distinction matters when diagnosing a call. A problem exchanging setup information is different from a problem carrying the audio, video, or data after connection setup.

Does WebRTC need a server?

WebRTC requires signaling arranged by the application, but it does not require one universal, built-in WebRTC server. The application chooses how to exchange setup information. The actual communication path is a separate matter: WebRTC aims for direct communication where possible, while a real deployment may involve additional network resources.

For an implementation, the relevant decisions include whether signaling is built in-house or provided by a service, the expected session size and topology, network traversal and relay needs, and who will operate and secure those systems. The standards explain the architecture, but do not establish current vendor availability, pricing, or a best choice for every application.

Is WebRTC secure?

Security depends on more than using a real-time protocol. The IETF’s RFC 8826 sets out a threat model, while RFC 8827 describes a WebRTC security architecture. Together, they are useful starting points for understanding the technology’s security considerations.

  • Pay attention to when an application requests access to a camera or microphone and whether that access is appropriate for the feature in use.
  • Consider the behavior and trustworthiness of the calling application, as well as services involved in connection setup.
  • Do not treat encryption alone as proof of the other participant’s identity or as a guarantee that every application using WebRTC is safe.

What WebRTC does not tell you

The standards describe APIs, protocols, and security architecture; they do not establish browser-by-browser compatibility, version-specific behavior, or the availability of a particular commercial service. Check the documentation for the browsers and devices your application needs to support, and validate the behavior in that target environment.

WebRTC is also not synonymous with a public livestream. Its central use cases are interactive communication and data exchange. A service that loops uploaded videos to keep a YouTube channel live has a different purpose; StreamNeo, for example, is a separate cloud service for that use case, not a WebRTC feature.
