“VR mode” on a phone can mean two related things: Android’s system behavior when a VR app is active, or an app’s split-screen view designed for a phone-based VR viewer. It is not a universal switch found in every phone’s settings. To try phone-based VR, you generally need a compatible app, a viewer that fits your phone, and the phone’s required software and sensors.
What does VR mode do on a phone?
In Android platform documentation, VR Mode describes how the system behaves while a VR application has focus: it handles stereoscopic rendering of notifications and disables system UI components designed for viewing with one eye. This is platform-level behavior, not a setting that necessarily appears as a toggle in your phone’s menus. Android’s Android 15 Compatibility Definition describes the requirements for devices that support high-performance VR mode.

In everyday use, people may also call an app’s side-by-side stereoscopic display “VR mode.” The app presents a view intended to be seen through a phone viewer, with an image for each eye. That app-level display and Android’s system-level VR behavior are related, but the phrase does not identify one feature that works identically on every phone.

What do you need to use phone-based VR?
Google’s Cardboard setup uses an Android phone, a Cardboard app, and a compatible physical viewer. Check these separately rather than relying on one compatibility label:

- Android version: Google’s Cardboard help page says the Android phone version should be 4.1 or higher. That is Cardboard-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every app or viewer will work. Google Cardboard Help: Set up Google Cardboard
- Physical fit: Confirm the viewer supports your phone’s size and dimensions. Google recommends checking the viewer maker’s website for compatibility.
- Motion sensors: Google says an incompatibility message may mean the phone lacks a gyroscope, which some VR experiences need for motion tracking.
- App and viewer support: The app must support the experience you want, and the viewer must work with both the phone’s dimensions and the app.
Meeting the stated Android version floor alone does not establish compatibility with a particular app-and-viewer combination.
How to set up Google Cardboard
- Open the Cardboard app on your Android phone.
- Tap the pairing arrow in the app.
- Scan the QR code on your viewer when prompted.
- Place the phone in the viewer and follow the instructions on the screen.
Google’s help page also recommends looking at a distant object before using the viewer and closing your eyes while bringing it up to your face. If you use a different viewer, adjust the app’s settings as needed. These are Cardboard instructions, not a universal Android settings path for turning on VR mode.

Cardboard and Daydream: what is the difference?
Cardboard is the documented phone-and-viewer route described above. Daydream was a separate, more specific Google VR setup. Google’s archived developer guide describes Daydream as requiring a Daydream-ready phone and Daydream View, while its Cardboard development path used an Android device and a Cardboard viewer. The guide is historical documentation, not evidence that Daydream equipment or services are currently available. Google VR SDK for Android quickstart
The quickstart’s Android 4.4/API 19 reference applies to its older SDK development setup; it is not the same requirement as the Android 4.1-or-higher guidance on Google’s Cardboard help page for phone use. Neither number should be treated as a universal minimum for all mobile VR apps or viewers.

What Android’s high-performance VR requirements mean
Android’s Android 15 Compatibility Definition lists implementation requirements for devices that support high-performance VR mode, including at least two physical cores, sustained performance mode, OpenGL ES 3.2, Vulkan hardware level 0, and specified graphics and buffer capabilities. Those are platform requirements for device implementations, not a consumer checklist that certifies whether a particular phone, app, and viewer will work together. Android 15 Compatibility Definition
