What Is VPN Passthrough, and When Does Your Router Need It?

VPN passthrough lets a device’s VPN traffic cross a router; it does not make the router itself a VPN endpoint.

VPN passthrough lets a device on your home network send VPN traffic through the router to a separate VPN endpoint. It does not turn the router into a VPN client or server: the device and remote endpoint still establish the VPN connection.

What VPN passthrough does

A router typically uses network address translation (NAT) to let devices on a private home network share an internet connection. Some VPN traffic needs handling that works with NAT. A router’s passthrough feature permits supported VPN traffic from a device behind the router to travel onward to the VPN endpoint.

In other words, passthrough is about allowing traffic across the router, not creating or encrypting the VPN tunnel itself. TP-Link describes it as VPN traffic created by other endpoints passing through the router in its VPN Passthrough FAQ. NETGEAR likewise explains that the router does not stop the traffic and that VPN endpoints are still required (NETGEAR’s VPN overview, updated July 7, 2025).

How it works with NAT

When a laptop or phone runs a VPN client, that device communicates with a VPN gateway elsewhere. The router sits between the device and the internet and translates network traffic so multiple devices can share the connection. Depending on the VPN protocol and router, the traffic may need protocol-specific handling to get through NAT successfully.

For IPsec, one documented approach is NAT traversal (NAT-T): Cisco’s RV215W guide describes encapsulating IPsec packets in UDP so they can work across NAT. This is a specific mechanism, not a claim that every VPN uses it or needs the same router option. See Cisco’s RV215W passthrough configuration guide for that device’s explanation.

Passthrough is not the same as running a VPN on the router

Setup What the router does Where the VPN endpoint runs
VPN passthrough Allows supported VPN traffic from a device on the local network to pass through. The VPN client runs on a computer or other device, and connects to a separate remote endpoint.
Router VPN client or server The router itself participates in the VPN connection as an endpoint. On the router, which connects to or serves another VPN endpoint.

Enabling passthrough therefore does not route every device through a VPN by itself. To have the router establish the connection for devices on the network, its firmware must support a VPN client or server function; passthrough alone is not that feature. TP-Link makes this distinction in its support FAQ.

Which VPN protocols may appear in router settings?

Router settings and manuals may list passthrough options for PPTP, L2TP, or IPsec. TP-Link’s FAQ names those protocols, while Cisco’s documentation covers particular RV-series routers. The names and available controls depend on the router model and firmware; these examples do not establish that every router supports them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that every current VPN app uses one of these older or model-specific options, or that a passthrough toggle is needed for every VPN protocol. Check the VPN provider’s client requirements and the router’s documentation for the exact protocol in use.

How to check or configure passthrough

  1. Identify where the VPN client runs. If a computer or phone behind the router runs it, passthrough may be relevant. If the router itself is meant to connect to the VPN, look for router VPN client or server support instead.
  2. Confirm the VPN protocol. Check the VPN app, service documentation, or network administrator’s instructions. The router option must correspond to the protocol and traffic involved.
  3. Find the control in the exact router’s documentation or admin interface. Menu names and paths vary by model and firmware. Cisco’s RV215W guide, for example, gives a VPN > VPN Passthrough path for that product; it is not a universal menu path.
  4. Follow the model-specific instructions. Defaults differ. TP-Link says passthrough is generally enabled by default on its routers, but that should not be assumed for other brands or models.

What to check if the VPN will not connect

  • Protocol and router support: Verify that the router supports the required passthrough behavior and that the VPN client and remote gateway use compatible settings.
  • IPsec and NAT-T: If the connection uses IPsec, check NAT-T support and configuration across the client, router, and remote gateway. Cisco documents NAT-T for the RV215W, but support and controls vary elsewhere.
  • Credentials and endpoint configuration: Confirm the account credentials, server address, and VPN profile with the VPN provider or network administrator.
  • Firewall and upstream network: If the local router setting appears correct, check relevant firewall rules and whether another router or carrier NAT sits upstream. The right next step depends on the network and VPN service.
  • Port forwarding: Do not open arbitrary ports as a first step. Cisco’s RV215W instructions say ports do not need to be opened to enable passthrough on that model; that guidance is specific to the RV215W, not a universal rule.

If you are replacing a router because a required protocol is unsupported, verify the exact model’s manual or specifications before buying; feature support should not be inferred from a product category or brand alone.

What to compare when checking router support

  • The VPN protocol the client actually uses.
  • Whether the router is passing traffic from a separate client or is expected to act as the VPN endpoint.
  • The instructions and default settings for the exact model and firmware.
  • Whether the client and remote gateway support compatible NAT traversal, where applicable.
