What Is Video Encoding? YouTube Live Settings for 2026

Video encoding prepares video and audio for streaming. Use YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate guidance, CBR, two-second keyframes, and a tested stable upload connection.

Video encoding converts your camera, screen, or prerecorded video into a compressed digital stream that YouTube can ingest and deliver to viewers. For YouTube Live, start with a supported codec, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate matched to your resolution, frame rate, and codec. You also need an upload connection that can sustain that bitrate reliably.

What video encoding does

An encoder compresses and formats video and audio so they can be sent over the internet as a live stream. It can be software running on a computer or standalone hardware. Hardware can suit productions using external AV equipment or multiple cameras, but it is not required for every YouTube Live broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes both options.

Encoding settings affect the signal sent to YouTube: codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframes, and audio format. YouTube then transcodes the incoming stream into playback formats for different devices and network conditions, so viewers may not receive the exact same encoded file your encoder sends.

YouTube Live’s recommended encoder settings

YouTube’s official settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest, with RTMPS recommended for encrypted transport. It supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. The maximum listed frame rate is 60 fps. Use CBR and set keyframes to a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance and its RTMPS encryption guidance.

Recommended video bitrates

The following are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates in Mbps, not guaranteed quality levels or universal minimum connection speeds. Each cell shows AV1/H.265 first and H.264 second. Choose the column for the codec actually sent to YouTube.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 H.264
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p30 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p30 (4K) 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p60 (4K) 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

YouTube also gives lower minimum figures; these are not the same as its recommendations. For example, at 1080p30 the stated minima are 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264; at 1080p60 they are 4 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively. Consult the current official table for other minimums and combinations rather than treating a minimum as a target.

Advanced video and audio settings

  • Use square pixels and progressive scan. YouTube recommends two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC entropy coding.
  • For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit color. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 and 10-bit; it says AV1 is not supported for HDR. For AV1 at 3840×2160 and above, use at least two tile columns.
  • For audio, use 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. YouTube recommends 128 kbps stereo or 384 kbps 5.1. On RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 audio is supported only with AAC.

How to choose a practical configuration

  1. Set the resolution and frame rate. Match the source and production capability. Fast gameplay or sports may benefit from 60 fps if the encoder and connection can sustain it; a mostly static presentation may be fine at 30 fps.
  2. Choose a supported codec. Use the codec your encoder and workflow can reliably produce. If streaming HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 and does not support AV1 for HDR.
  3. Set the bitrate from YouTube’s table. Find the row for your resolution and frame rate, then use the recommendation for your ingest codec. Higher resolution or frame rate generally requires a higher bitrate under YouTube’s guidance.
  4. Use CBR and two-second keyframes. Keep the keyframe interval at or below four seconds. Select RTMPS when available for encrypted transport.
  5. Check sustained upload performance. A speed-test result is only a snapshot; it does not establish that the connection will remain stable throughout a broadcast. YouTube does not specify a universal upload-headroom percentage in this guidance, so test the chosen settings on the actual connection.
  6. Run a representative test. Use similar motion and audio to the planned broadcast. Review stream health and encoder messages before going live and monitor them during the event. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; a custom stream key can be used for manual selection.

Stream keys, latency, and viewer playback

A stream key connects your encoder to the live setup, and YouTube provides a stream URL. Manage the stream details in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room; use the stream key shown for that setup. If you think a key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Latency is the delay between capture and playback. Lower latency can increase buffering, so it is most useful when you need viewers to interact with you in near real time. If interaction is not important, the lower-delay option may not be worth the playback trade-off. YouTube says 2160p/4K streams do not have the low-latency optimization option and use normal latency. Regardless of the selected ingest settings, YouTube transcodes the signal for playback across devices and network conditions.

Common encoding problems and fixes

  • Stream buffers or drops frames: Check whether upload capacity remains stable at the selected bitrate. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a supported combination if the connection cannot sustain the current signal, then test again.
  • Encoder settings are rejected or the stream will not start: Confirm the codec is supported, use CBR, set two-second keyframes, and verify the stream URL and key correspond to the intended YouTube live setup.
  • Audio is missing or incompatible: Confirm the encoder is sending AAC or MP3. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC; check the sample rate and channel configuration.
  • Viewers report buffering despite a stable encoder: Check YouTube’s stream health and remember that playback depends on viewer devices and connections as well as the incoming signal. Lower latency can make buffering more likely.
  • Someone else may have the stream key: Reset the compromised key in Live Control Room and update the encoder or streaming service with the replacement.
