VESA DisplayPort Alternate Mode, or DP Alt Mode, lets a compatible USB-C connection carry DisplayPort audio and video. The key catch: a USB-C connector does not by itself mean the device can send video. The source port must support DP Alt Mode, and the cable, any dock or adapter, and the display input must fit the connection.
How DP Alt Mode works
DP Alt Mode is an alternate mode within the USB Type-C framework. When the connected devices support it, the connection repurposes some or all of USB-C’s four high-speed lanes for DisplayPort video. Other connector signaling carries DisplayPort functions such as the AUX channel and hot-plug detection. VESA announced the first DisplayPort Alt Mode standard on September 22, 2014 (VESA announcement).

The lane arrangement matters when you also want SuperSpeed USB data. Using all four high-speed lanes for DisplayPort video leaves no high-speed lanes available for simultaneous SuperSpeed USB data over that connection; configurations that reserve lanes for USB data allocate fewer lanes to DisplayPort.
What DP Alt Mode does—and does not—guarantee
- It can carry DisplayPort audio and video: provided the source port and the rest of the connection support the required functions.
- It does not follow from the connector shape: USB-C describes the connector, not a guarantee of display output. Check the specifications for the exact computer, tablet, or phone port.
- It does not make every cable or accessory suitable: the cable or adapter and the display input must match the supported connection.
VESA’s 2016 statement that the standard can combine DisplayPort audio/video, SuperSpeed USB data, and up to 100 watts of power describes capabilities of the standard, not a promise that every USB-C device, cable, or display supports all three (VESA compliance-test announcement, December 13, 2016). Treat the power figure as historical capability context, not as a guarantee about a particular setup.

DP Alt Mode 2.0 bandwidth figures
In its April 29, 2020 announcement of DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0, VESA described up to 80 Gbps of DisplayPort video when all four high-speed lanes are used, or up to 40 Gbps with simultaneous SuperSpeed USB data (VESA Alt Mode 2.0 announcement). These are figures for the Alt Mode 2.0 capabilities described by VESA, not universal USB-C speeds or a guarantee of the performance of a particular device, cable, display, or configuration.
Native DP Alt Mode sends DisplayPort over USB-C’s high-speed lanes. DisplayPort tunneling through USB4 is a distinct way of transporting DisplayPort; VESA’s announcement discusses both rather than treating them as the same connection method.

Connecting a USB-C device to a display
Choose the connection only after checking both ends: the source’s USB-C port must support DP Alt Mode, and the display’s input determines the cable or adapter you need.

| Display input | Connection to consider |
|---|---|
| DisplayPort | A USB-C-to-DisplayPort converter cable or suitable adapter. |
| HDMI, DVI, or VGA | An appropriate USB-C display adapter for that input. |
VESA describes these cable and adapter options for connecting a compatible USB-C source to displays (VESA’s original Alt Mode announcement). If you need more ports as well, use a dock or peripheral that explicitly supports the relevant DisplayPort connection; do not assume an arbitrary USB hub will pass video.

Why a USB-C-to-DisplayPort connection may fail
- Check the source port. Look up the specifications for the exact USB-C port on the computer, tablet, or phone. If it lacks DP Alt Mode, a cable alone cannot add native DP Alt Mode video output.
- Test a direct connection. Connect the source to the display without an intervening hub. VESA says a USB hub does not support DisplayPort connections between its ports.
- Verify the display input and adapter. Confirm that the display accepts the signal through the input you are using and that the cable or adapter is intended for the source and that input.
- Check the intermediary. If you need a dock or other peripheral, verify that it explicitly supports the DisplayPort connection in your setup. VESA lists an unsupported source port and an intervening USB hub among possible causes of a failed connection (VESA troubleshooting guidance).
