What Is Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), and How Does It Work?

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) lets devices and software control points discover and interact with services on an IP network. Here are its stages and limits.

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is a networking architecture that lets devices on an IP network discover one another and interact with the services they offer. A device provides services; a control point—often software—finds a device, learns its capabilities, and can send it actions or subscribe to updates.

What does UPnP mean?

UPnP stands for Universal Plug and Play. It is an architecture for communication among IP-connected devices and control points, not a brand, a single device, or one specific consumer app. The official UPnP Device Architecture version 2.0, dated September 1, 2014, organizes the process into six stages: addressing, discovery, description, control, eventing, and presentation.

In UPnP terminology, a device is the participant that offers services. A control point searches for, controls, or listens for updates from those services. The control point may be an application; the architecture defines network roles, not a required user interface.

How does UPnP work?

The stages form a sequence from getting onto the network to finding and using a device’s services. Discovery is only the finding stage; the control point retrieves a separate description before it knows the device’s capabilities.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  1. Addressing: Devices and control points obtain network addresses. UPnP is based on IP networking.
  2. Discovery: A device can advertise its services, while a control point can search for devices or services. Discovery messages identify what was found and point to further information.
  3. Description: The control point retrieves an XML device description to learn about the device and its capabilities.
  4. Control: The control point invokes actions exposed by a device’s services. The separate UPnP Device Architecture version 1.1 document specifies XML control messages using SOAP.
  5. Eventing: A control point may subscribe to a service and receive updates when evented state variables change. This complements control actions: one sends a command, the other can report a change.
  6. Presentation: Some devices provide a presentation URL that a control point can retrieve to view status or control the device, depending on the page and the device’s capabilities.

What is UPnP on a router?

On a router, “UPnP” generally refers to support for this architecture, but the label alone does not specify how that particular router implements it or what its setting does. The architecture describes device discovery and interaction on an IP network; it is not a router-specific security assessment. Whether a device is exposed to the public internet, or whether a router is configured safely, depends on the actual router, network, and relevant security guidance—not merely on the words “UPnP enabled.”

Does UPnP mean a device is connected to the internet?

No. The standard describes communication over an IP network, which does not by itself establish that a device is reachable from the public internet. A device can participate in a local network without the architecture alone telling you whether or how it is exposed externally. To assess a particular setup, consult documentation and current security advisories for its router and devices.

What happens when a device is discovered?

Discovery tells a control point that a device or service is available and provides a pointer to more information. The control point then retrieves the device description to learn which services and capabilities are offered. If the control point supports them, it can invoke service actions; it may also subscribe to event updates. A discovery message by itself does not mean the control point has inspected or used every capability.

Do UPnP versions describe different features?

The cited architecture documents identify version 2.0, dated September 1, 2014, and a separate version 1.1 document. Both support the core model of discovery followed by description and control, but implementation details should be attributed to the relevant version. These documents do not establish which version is most widely deployed, and a version label does not prove that a particular product implements every feature in that architecture.
