Thermal dye transfer is a printing process in which a heated printhead moves controlled amounts of dye from a ribbon into a specially coated receiver material. It is commonly called dye-sublimation printing, although “dye diffusion thermal transfer” more precisely describes how the dye forms the image.
How thermal dye transfer makes an image
The printer starts with digital color information and separates it into signals for the image’s color layers. A thermal printhead presses the donor ribbon against the receiver material and heats selected spots. More heat transfers more dye; less heat transfers less. By varying the amount across the image, the printer can create continuous tones rather than relying only on dots of fixed color.

Color is typically built from cyan, magenta, and yellow dye, applied in successive passes or from corresponding panels on a ribbon. Some systems then apply a clear laminate panel over the image. Getty’s Art & Architecture Thesaurus describes the process as applying a continuous-tone image to receiver materials through thermal transfer of cyan, yellow, and magenta dyes.

The printer, ribbon, and receiver must be designed to work together. This is not simply a matter of putting ordinary paper into any printer that uses heat.

- Printer and thermal printhead: The printhead provides localized heat that controls dye transfer.
- Donor ribbon: The ribbon carries the dye layers. It may use a thin PET support along with dye, adhesive, and heat-resistant or slip layers.
- Receiver media: The receiving material has a purpose-made layer that accepts the dye, supported by paper, film, or another substrate. The exact construction varies by system.
For a replacement ribbon or paper kit, check the printer’s make and model and the required media size before buying. The fact that two products use thermal printing does not establish that their refills are interchangeable.
What does “dye sublimation” mean?
“Dye sublimation” and “dye sub” are the familiar consumer names for this kind of printing. Getty’s preferred technical term is dye diffusion thermal transfer printing; “dye sublimation printing” is listed as an alternate term. D2T2 is a shortened technical name for dye diffusion thermal transfer.

The terminology can be confusing because the method is often discussed alongside other kinds of thermal printing. NIST’s OSAC Lexicon describes dye diffusion thermal transfer, also called dye sublimation, as an imaging process using thermal dye ribbons with selected organic dyes. It distinguishes those imaging characteristics from pigmented materials used in thermal-transfer wax ribbons.

How it differs from other thermal printing
“Thermal printing” is an umbrella description, not one single image-making mechanism. Kyocera distinguishes three methods:

| Method | How the image is made |
|---|---|
| Direct thermal | Heat changes special paper to create the image; there is no transfer from a ribbon. |
| Melt thermal-transfer | Heat melts material on a ribbon and transfers it to receiving paper. |
| Dye-diffusion thermal-transfer | Heat controls how much dye moves from an ink layer into the receiver. |
NIST uses “thermal transfer printing” more broadly for non-impact printing in which a heated printhead works through a coated ribbon, including wax transfer, dye sublimation, and thermal fusion. That broader category should not be confused with dye diffusion specifically. In particular, a generic thermal-transfer barcode ribbon is not automatically suitable for a dye-sublimation photo printer.
Where it is used, and how prints are protected
Dye-diffusion thermal-transfer systems are used for photo printing and for items such as ID cards and seals. Depending on the system, receiver materials can include photographic stock, labels, transparency films, and card materials.

Some printers apply a clear laminate after the color layers. Kodak’s technical paper describes this layer as protection against environmental exposure such as ultraviolet radiation, ozone, dirt, moisture, and handling; prints without it are more susceptible to density loss and fading. Protection depends on the specific media and finishing system, so dye-sublimation prints should not all be assumed to be waterproof or equally durable.

- What are you making? A photo, ID card, seal, label, and transparency can call for different equipment and receiver media.
- Which printing mechanism is specified? Confirm that the printer uses dye-diffusion thermal transfer if that is the output you need; “thermal” alone is not specific enough.
- Which ribbon and receiver are compatible? Match both to the printer model and intended output. A ribbon and receiver form part of a system, not generic supplies.
- Does the system add a protective overcoat? If resistance to handling or environmental exposure matters, check whether the printer and media apply a laminate and what protection the manufacturer specifies.
- What size and format does it support? Confirm the required media dimensions and output format before purchasing supplies.
These checks are more useful than assuming that all thermal printers share media or comparing systems on a single quality or durability claim.
Origins of the method
The Image Permanence Institute’s Digital Print Preservation: DP3 Guide traces the discovery of the dye-sublimation effect to Noël de Plasse in 1957, its use for image printing by Sony engineer Nobutoshi Kihara to 1982, and commercial availability to 1986. Separately, Kodak researcher David G. Foster reported that Kodak had developed and used resistive-head thermal dye-transfer printing since 1984. These are historical milestones, not measures of present-day performance.
