What is the Xbox PC app?
It is an application for Windows that connects several parts of PC gaming in the Xbox ecosystem. You can browse games, download supported titles, open installed games, see recommendations, and manage a library that may include games from Xbox, Game Pass, and other PC storefronts. Microsoft describes this library as an aggregation feature; it does not mean every game from another storefront is sold through or launched by Xbox.

Microsoft’s Xbox PC app page also describes social, store, cloud gaming, Remote Play, and Xbox Mode features. Which features appear or work depends on the game, device, region, and—in some cases—subscription.

Find, install, and launch PC games
Browse the catalog and recommendations, download supported games, and open games installed on your PC. A title’s own system requirements still determine whether your computer can run it smoothly; meeting the app’s minimum requirements is not enough to guarantee compatibility with every game.

Browse Game Pass
The app lets you explore the Game Pass library, but it does not include a subscription. PC Game Pass is a separate paid service that provides access to a rotating catalog of PC games and related benefits. The available games, plan terms, and subscription details vary by market. Connect with friends
You can view friends and chat across PC, console, and mobile. Xbox Game Bar also provides gaming features while you play. These social tools are part of the app experience, not a requirement for installing or playing a single-player PC game.

Buy games and add-ons
The Store tab lets you purchase PC games, downloadable content, and add-ons. Game Pass subscribers may receive discounts on selected games in the catalog; discounts and eligible titles can vary.

These are different ways to play, not alternate names for installing a PC game. Cloud gaming streams supported console titles to a compatible device. Xbox Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox console. Their availability and requirements differ by feature, game, plan, device, and region. - Local installation: The game runs on your PC, subject to its requirements.
- Cloud gaming: A supported game is streamed; availability depends on the title, plan, device, and region.
- Remote Play: A game installed on your console is streamed from that console.
What does the app require?
Microsoft’s US Xbox PC app page lists Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or higher, 150 MB of storage, and a 720p display as app-level requirements. Games can require more capable hardware, storage, or newer software. Microsoft also notes that you may need to switch out of Windows S mode to use the app. These figures describe the app, not the requirements for every game.
Xbox Mode is a controller-optimized gaming experience described for Windows 11 PCs and handhelds, with a way to switch between Xbox Mode and the Windows desktop. Do not assume that every Windows PC has the same Xbox Mode availability.

Is the Xbox PC app the same as PC Game Pass?
No. The app is software for discovering and managing games, connecting with friends, shopping, and accessing supported Xbox features. PC Game Pass is a separate subscription that provides access to a changing catalog of games and related benefits. You can use app features such as browsing, social tools, and purchases without treating the app itself as a Game Pass membership; subscription access and streaming eligibility depend on the applicable plan and market.

Who is the app useful for?
- PC players who want one place to manage games: The app can combine Xbox and Game Pass games with games installed from many other PC storefronts.
- Players considering a subscription: It provides a way to browse Game Pass, while the subscription and its catalog remain separate.
- Xbox console owners: Remote Play can connect the PC app experience to games installed on their console.
- Players who prefer streaming: Cloud gaming may be an option for supported titles, but it has different requirements from local installation.
