WINDIR is the Windows environment variable that identifies the Windows folder on the system drive. It is commonly written as %windir% in Command Prompt. The path is often C:Windows, but that is an example, not a guaranteed location.
What does the WINDIR environment variable mean?
“Win” is not a precise environment-variable name. The likely intended name is WINDIR, which Microsoft defines as referring to the Windows folder located on the system drive. Microsoft documents SYSTEMROOT as having the same value. Microsoft’s recognized environment variables reference gives C:Windows as a typical path for Windows 10 and Windows 11, not a value that applies to every PC.
How to display the value
Use the syntax for the shell you have open. These commands show the variable value available to that current process.

Why the value can depend on the process
An environment variable is a named string value in a process’s environment block. Microsoft explains that each process has an environment block and that a child process normally inherits its environment from its parent when it starts. Microsoft’s Win32 documentation describes this process-level behavior.

Consequently, a command reports the value in that shell’s environment; it is not a universal lookup that bypasses the process. If the environment supplied to a process has been modified, the shell can show that process’s available value. The PowerShell syntax above is documented for Windows; PowerShell is also available on other platforms, where environment-variable behavior may differ.
