The U.S. Space Force (USSF) is a distinct branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, established on December 20, 2019, to secure the nation’s interests in, from, and to space. It is organized under the Department of the Air Force, and its military and civilian personnel are called Guardians.
What does the U.S. Space Force do?
The Space Force’s official mission is to “Secure our Nation’s Interests In, From, And To Space.” The three parts describe related but distinct responsibilities:

- In space: Conduct space-superiority activities to protect the joint force and the nation from space and counterspace threats.
- From space: Provide global mission operations such as satellite communications, positioning, navigation and timing, and missile warning.
- To space: Help assure access to space through launch, range, and control infrastructure.
In practical terms, the service organizes, trains, and equips forces to operate and defend space systems. That does not mean it owns or operates every satellite or service people use; its stated role is to deliver specified mission operations and support the joint force. The Space Force explains its mission at its official mission page.

Congress established the Space Force on December 20, 2019, when the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2020 was signed into law. The service’s official history describes its creation as a response to the growing importance of space to national security and the need for a military service focused on that domain. Military space capabilities also support services used in civilian life. The Space Force cites satellite communications, weather monitoring, television broadcasting, and GPS timing and navigation as examples. Those examples illustrate how space systems matter beyond military operations; they do not imply that the Space Force provides or controls every such service.
Is the Space Force part of the Air Force?
No. The Space Force is a separate and distinct armed service, but it is organized within the Department of the Air Force. That department contains both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Space Force. The arrangement is comparable to the Marine Corps being a separate service organized under the Department of the Navy; it does not make the Space Force a subdivision of the Air Force.
Space Force headquarters is at the Pentagon. The Chief of Space Operations is its senior uniformed officer, responsible for organizing, training, and equipping assigned forces. The service’s organization page describes these roles.

Who are Guardians, and how large is the service?
“Guardians” is the name for Space Force military and civilian personnel. The service’s organization page reported more than 14,000 military and civilian Guardians for fiscal year 2023. That is a dated figure, not a verified 2026 headcount; a separate official records page also described more than 14,000 as of 2024.
