The Society for Information Display (SID) is a not-for-profit professional association for people working in or interested in information display. Founded in 1962, it supports the field through technical publications, conferences, education, research resources, and work on definitions and standards.
What does “information display” mean?
SID’s scope is broader than screens alone. Its bylaws cover the science and engineering of display devices and systems, as well as how people interact with and respond to them. That includes display theory, applications and peripherals, materials, processing and manufacturing, measurement, imaging and image processing, design, perception, and the psychological and physiological effects of display systems on people.

What does SID do?
SID’s formal purposes include advancing the science, education, and practice of information display and allied fields; providing members access to a research repository; creating opportunities to exchange ideas; and promulgating definitions and standards. Its mission is to help move electronic display and other visual information technologies from concept to market, supporting a thriving industry. It carries out that work through publications, conferences, professional communities, and chapters. The association is a professional organization that supports technical work and standards activity; it is not itself a display technology or a standards body by definition.
How does SID share technical work?
Publications
SID publishes the Journal of the Society for Information Display, Information Display magazine, and the annual Digest of Technical Papers. The Digest covers the theory and practice of information display, including materials, devices, systems, measurement, manufacturing, and interactions between equipment and users. Conferences
SID sponsors Display Week, its annual technical symposium and exhibition, as well as regional and international display conferences. These events provide settings for presenting and discussing developments across the field. Display Week’s official site provides event information.
Who can join SID?
SID says membership is open to individuals interested in information display. Its bylaws include student, member, senior member, fellow, corporate member, and life member grades. The association describes its community as international, encompassing display scientists, engineers, corporate researchers, and business professionals. Display technology draws on many specialties, from materials and manufacturing to image processing, measurement, design, and human perception. SID brings people working across those areas into a shared professional community and gives them channels to publish research, meet at conferences, and discuss technical practice. Its publications and events help circulate work that might otherwise remain within separate technical disciplines or organizations.
