Vortex is the current official replacement for Nexus Mod Manager (NMM). The original NMM is now a legacy project, while the separate Nexus Mods App was discontinued as Nexus Mods redirected development to Vortex. For most Windows users installing Nexus Mods today, Vortex is the official starting point.
The three products people mean by “Nexus Mod Manager”
| Product | Current status | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Nexus Mod Manager (NMM) | Legacy manager. Its old official release is no longer the main Nexus recommendation; a community-maintained codebase remains on GitHub. | Do not install it for a new setup merely because a search result calls it “Nexus Mod Manager.” Keep an existing installation isolated until you have backed it up. |
| Vortex | Current official Nexus Mods manager, promoted on the official Vortex page. | Use it as the default choice for most Nexus users on supported Windows games. |
| Nexus Mods App | A separate newer project whose development Nexus Mods stopped. The company’s FAQ, updated January 14, 2026, says development is focused on Vortex instead. | Do not treat it as the current name for Vortex or as the manager to install. |
In other words, Vortex is the successor, not a renamed NMM executable. The Nexus Mods App was also not converted into Vortex; it was a separate project that was discontinued.

Nexus Mods announced that users of the last official NMM release, version 0.65.2, would eventually lose compatibility with Nexus API changes and encouraged migration to Vortex or an updated community version. That announcement also noted that local functions and manual downloads could continue independently of Nexus login: Nexus API announcement.

- Launching a game using the selected mod setup.
Vortex is open source; its development repository describes it as Nexus Mods’ current mod manager: Vortex on GitHub. It is not a universal compatibility layer. A particular game may still require a script extender, patcher, configuration editor, load-order utility or game-specific framework. Vortex can organize those components, but it cannot make an incompatible mod compatible.
Why NMM was replaced
NMM was the earlier Nexus manager. Nexus Mods developed Vortex as a new application informed by lessons from both NMM and Mod Organizer; the official Vortex listing identifies Tannin, the creator of Mod Organizer, as its lead developer and describes Vortex as the replacement direction: Vortex listing.
The change was practical rather than a single overnight shutdown. NMM’s older assumptions about Nexus authentication, the API, game support and file handling became increasingly difficult to maintain. The historical official release may still manage some locally installed files, but online login, downloads, current game support and compatibility vary by version. A community fork can be useful for a legacy setup, but its existence does not make old NMM the current official product.

Is Vortex free?
Vortex itself is free and open source. You can create a free Nexus Mods account and connect it to Vortex for the integrated download workflow; Nexus’s getting-started guidance recommends doing so: Vortex getting started.
A Nexus Premium membership is optional. It can improve download convenience and speed, especially for large collections, but it is not a paid edition of Vortex and is not required to run the manager. Current Premium terms and pricing should be checked on the official page before subscribing: Nexus Premium.
How to install a mod with Vortex
Exact labels can change between Vortex releases and game extensions, but the normal workflow is:

- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Install Vortex from an official source. Use the Nexus Mods Vortex page or the official GitHub repository, not a random “NMM 2026” mirror.
- Sign in or connect your Nexus account. A free account enables the direct Nexus hand-off.
- Open Games in Vortex. Let it detect the game, or use the available manage/locate option to select the installation.
- Open a supported mod page on Nexus Mods. Choose Mod Manager Download rather than a browser-only archive when that option is available.
- Allow the browser to open Vortex. If prompted, approve the Vortex protocol link.
- Install the downloaded mod in Vortex. Some mods present installer choices; read them instead of accepting every option blindly.
- Enable the mod. Vortex may then ask you to deploy the changes.
- Deploy mods when requested. Deployment applies Vortex’s rules to the game’s mod locations.
- Review warnings. Check missing requirements, conflicts, plugin order and game-version notes.
- Launch using the game’s recommended method. Some games need a script-extender executable or another launcher rather than the ordinary game shortcut.
The Nexus workflow is documented with the Mod Manager and Mod Manager Download controls here: Nexus download instructions. The page was written for the separate app, so the hand-off may now open Vortex and the exact prompts may differ.

There is no universal winner. Choose based on how you work and what your game guide requires.
| Situation | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New to PC modding | Vortex | Guided interface and the simplest official Nexus workflow. |
| Mostly downloads Nexus collections | Vortex | Closest integration with Nexus collection and download features. |
| Large, complex Skyrim or Fallout setup | MO2 or the guide’s specified manager | Virtualized files, detailed priorities and strong profile separation. |
| Following an advanced modlist | Whatever the guide specifies | Its installer steps, tools and support assumptions are part of the instructions. |
| Maximum control over file isolation | MO2 | Mods remain separated and are presented through a virtual file system. |
How the two models differ
Vortex generally deploys files into the game’s modding locations using rules that determine which files win conflicts. MO2 keeps the installed mods separate and presents a virtualized view to the game. That separation is particularly useful when experimenting with many Bethesda mods, changing priorities frequently or maintaining several detailed profiles.

- Back Buttons & Battery: Two programmable back buttons map combos and shortcuts. Textured grips with dual vibration. 1000mAh battery delivers up to 20H playtime. RGB can be turned off. A solid PC controller for gaming with custom back buttons

MO2 is also more demanding to configure. Its official release material lists version 2.5.2 and requires Windows 10 version 1809 or later, or Windows 11. The same release notes say Microsoft Store and Game Pass versions of supported games are not supported because of the virtual file system: MO2 releases. MO2 integrates with Nexus for downloads and updates, but it is not as beginner-oriented as Vortex: MO2 Nexus listing.
What to do if you still use NMM
Do not point Vortex at an unmanaged, working NMM installation and assume every rule and dependency will be recreated. A manager’s records, installer choices, priorities and actual files in the game directory are not interchangeable.
Recommended Free Tools
- Stop changing the old setup until you have a backup.
- Record the game version, installed mods, load order and any script extenders.
- Back up save files separately from the game and manager folders.
- Copy NMM’s mod archive or download folder to safe storage.
- Choose a migration approach: a clean Vortex profile, a controlled reinstall from the archive, MO2, or temporary isolation for a legacy game.
- Check every mod’s current requirements and compatibility before reinstalling.
- Test the unmodded or minimally modded game, then add mods in small batches.
Switching between Vortex and MO2 is usually possible, but it is not a frictionless toggle. Purge or otherwise undo one manager’s deployment before activating another, and do not run both managers against the same game directory without a documented migration plan.

Windows, Linux, Steam Deck and store editions
Vortex is primarily a Windows tool. Nexus Mods’ discontinuation FAQ, updated January 14, 2026, stated that Linux was not supported by the current Vortex release: Nexus Mods App discontinuation FAQ. Wine, Proton and community scripts are not the same as native official support, so Linux and Steam Deck users should verify the current position before committing to a setup.
Game edition matters too. Steam, Epic, GOG, Microsoft Store, Game Pass, VR and remastered releases can use different paths, launchers and permissions. MO2’s release notes specifically exclude Microsoft Store/Game Pass editions; Vortex support likewise depends on the game extension and edition. Check the game’s current modding guide before installing a manager.
Does Vortex support every Nexus game?
No. Support depends on whether a maintained Vortex game extension exists, how the game stores mods, the edition you own and the instructions provided by the mod author. Nexus pages currently show conflicting support totals—“over 30,” “over 65” and “over 250” on different official pages—so those figures should not be treated as a precise current count:
The safe conclusion is that Vortex supports many games, but support is game-specific. A mod may also require manual installation, an external patcher or a script extender even when the game itself is supported.
Collections are convenient, not completely unattended
Vortex is the normal official route for Nexus collections. A collection can still require a compatible game, the required files, confirmation prompts and manual choices for optional components. Some lists depend on external tools or patches that are not distributed through Nexus. Premium may reduce download friction for large collections, but it does not remove compatibility decisions or game-specific setup.
Troubleshooting common Vortex problems
“Mod Manager Download” does nothing
- Confirm Vortex is installed and running.
- Allow the browser to open the Vortex protocol.
- Restart both the browser and Vortex, then sign in again.
- Download the archive manually and import it into Vortex if the hand-off still fails.
The game is not detected
- Open Vortex’s Games section and use its manage or locate option.
- Confirm the game is installed in a supported location and that you own a supported edition.
- Run the game once if its configuration files do not yet exist.
- Check the game extension’s instructions before changing paths manually.
The mod installs but has no effect
- Verify that it is enabled and deployed.
- Read missing-requirement and conflict warnings.
- Confirm the game version and install any required script extender or framework.
- Check whether the mod needs a particular plugin order or manual file placement.
- Test with a new save where the mod author recommends it.
The game becomes unstable
- Disable the newest mod or the suspected conflict and revert the last change.
- Review requirements and plugin order rather than deleting random files from the game folder.
- Use Vortex’s purge or deployment controls where available.
- Restore your backup or create a clean profile if the installation is severely contaminated.
A game update breaks the setup
- Pause automatic updates where practical.
- Check compatibility for the game, mods and script extender before updating everything.
- Keep a backup of the previously working profile and do not update every component at once.
Which manager should you install?
- Most Windows users: install Vortex from the official Nexus Mods page.
- Advanced Skyrim or Fallout users: use MO2 when your modlist or guide calls for virtualized files and precise priorities.
- Existing NMM users: back up saves, archives and the old setup, then migrate deliberately instead of mixing managers.
- Linux or Steam Deck users: verify current official support and evaluate alternatives or community workarounds separately.
- Microsoft Store or Game Pass users: check edition support before choosing MO2 or any other manager.
For a new Nexus Mods installation, the answer is straightforward: Vortex is the current official Nexus Mod Manager replacement. NMM is legacy software, and the separate Nexus Mods App is no longer Nexus Mods’ development focus.
