For standard four-pair copper Ethernet, plan on a maximum channel length of 100 m (328 ft). That is not a universal limit for every Ethernet technology: fiber Ethernet can reach farther with compatible optics, while specialized 10BASE-T1L single-pair Ethernet is designed for runs up to 1,000 m at 10 Mbps.
What does the 100-meter limit mean?
The 100 m (328 ft) figure is the planning ceiling for a standards-compliant four-pair copper Ethernet channel—not a guarantee that any cable labeled “Ethernet” will work at that distance. The applicable cable category, installation quality, connected PHYs, and channel requirements all matter. Cisco’s Catalyst 9200 hardware installation guide and CPwE physical infrastructure guide describe the relevant copper limits and use cases.

The full channel matters: a patch cord, a wall run, and another patch cord all contribute to the total. A short section above 100 m is not made standards-compliant simply by using a high-category cable.
Does cable category change the maximum length?
Category affects which speeds a compliant copper channel can support over a given reach. For 10GBASE-T, Cisco lists Cat6A as supporting 10 Gb/s over up to 100 m in its Catalyst 9200 guide and 10GBASE SFP+ modules data sheet. This describes the supported channel under the relevant requirements; a cable’s printed category by itself does not certify an installed run.

Can Ethernet run farther than 100 meters?
Yes, but the right solution depends on the Ethernet physical layer, required speed, cable or fiber, and endpoint compatibility. “Ethernet” covers multiple media and PHYs, so one distance figure cannot describe all of them.
Fiber Ethernet
Fiber is a common choice for links beyond 100 m. Its reach depends on the Ethernet standard, fiber type, and transceivers at both ends. As an example of how specific these limits are, Cisco’s troubleshooting reference lists 1000BASE-ZX configurations with reaches up to 70 km or 100 km for particular single-mode setups; those figures are not generic limits for arbitrary fiber cable or optics. Check the exact module and fiber compatibility in the Cisco optics troubleshooting reference.

Single-pair Ethernet
For suitable applications, IEEE 802.3cg 10BASE-T1L is a distinct single-pair copper option. Cisco describes it as a 10 Mbps physical layer reaching up to 1,000 m (3,280 ft) in its industrial networking guide. It is not a way to extend an ordinary four-pair RJ-45 Ethernet link while keeping the same PHY and rate.
Extenders and non-standard long-reach copper
Some installations use purpose-built extenders or long-reach products, but the general 100 m four-pair channel limit does not establish a guaranteed distance or speed for them. Confirm the specific product’s supported rate, cable, topology, and endpoint requirements rather than assuming an extended run remains standard Ethernet.

- Our Advantages: Feature Double Jackets. Super Sturdy and Durable. The Second UV Resistant LLDPE jacket is ideal for outdoor and direct buried installation. It can withstand temperature changes, sunlight, soil, water, snow, potential wildlife and other outdoor factors. Buried directly underground or used in conduits----The joints feature a SR (stress relief) anti-break design----Especially, It can support POE Camera perfectly.
- High Performance: Features 4 twisted pairs of SOLID CCA Copper Clad Conductors 0.51mm (24 AWG) and Gold-Plated RJ45 connectors---- Twisted pairs with a PVC Cross Separator reduces noise for clean uninterrupted connection. This cross flexi-core makes for a more durable cable that won¡¯t bend or break ----For 10 Gigabit & 550MHz applications (shorter than 180feet),or 1 Gigabit & 250MHz (longer than 180feet), with no signal interference.
- Kind reminder: NOT Cat 6A or Cat 7; NOT FTP/SFTP; NOT made of pure copper conductors; A little stiff as the by-product of being sturdy, you might be able to just barely bend them to a 90 degree angle.
- Universal Compatibility: Universal connectivity for everything from computers, printers, servers, routers, and switch boxes to network media players, network-attached storage devices, VoIP phones, and other standard office equipment.Especially, It can support POE Camera perfectly.
- 2-Years Warranty: You are eligible for a refund or replacement if any quality issues arise within the first two years of purchase. Should you have any inquiries, please feel free to reach out to us through Amazon promptly. We are committed to providing you with the highest level of service and a satisfactory solution.
How should you choose a solution for your run?
- Set the required rate. Establish whether the link needs 1 Gb/s, 10 Gb/s, or another rate; longer-reach alternatives may trade speed for distance.
- Measure total channel reach. Include patch cords and all other copper or fiber segments between the endpoints.
- Match the medium and PHY at both ends. For a copper run targeting 10GBASE-T across the full 100 m, Cat6A is the documented fit, subject to a compliant installation. For fiber, match the fiber type and transceivers to the specific Ethernet PHY and distance.
- Account for the site. Consider electrical noise, isolation needs, the environment, and whether an intermediate switch or extender is practical.
- Verify the installed channel. A category marking is not proof that a completed link meets channel requirements; use appropriate installation and certification practices for the intended rate and reach.
Why do older Ethernet distance tables show different numbers?
Older Ethernet specifications distinguish among physical layers, media, and network segments. Cisco’s legacy 100BaseTX/10BaseT specifications, for example, list 100 m for a 100BASE-TX segment alongside different limits for fiber and repeater configurations. Those figures illustrate why “maximum Ethernet cable length” needs a medium and PHY attached; they are not a universal current distance table.
