A Mac file system is the on-disk format and organizing scheme that lets macOS store, find and retrieve files on a storage volume. On any Mac running macOS 10.13 or later, the default format is Apple File System (APFS), according to Apple Support. If you are choosing a format for a drive that must also work with Windows, the answer changes, and that is covered below.
What a file system is
Apple’s developer documentation describes the file system as the part of the system that handles persistent files, apps and operating-system data, and arranges them hierarchically through directories (File System Basics). It is not the physical drive. The same SSD or hard disk can hold different file systems at different times, depending on how it was formatted.

“Mac file system” can mean two things: the general way macOS organizes storage, or one of the specific formats Disk Utility offers. Treating the phrase as a synonym for APFS alone is too narrow, because Macs also work with older and Windows-oriented formats.

Apple’s Disk Utility guide names APFS as the format used by macOS 10.13 or later. It lists strong encryption, space sharing, snapshots and fast directory sizing among its features (Apple Support). Apple’s developer material adds cloning, atomic safe-save and sparse files (About Apple File System).

- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Containers and volumes
An APFS container can hold several volumes that share its free space. Apple says these volumes can grow and shrink independently, with the container’s available space allocated as needed. APFS is optimized for flash/SSD storage, and it also works with external, direct-attached storage.
APFS variants
Disk Utility lists four variants: APFS, APFS (Encrypted), APFS (Case-sensitive) and APFS (Case-sensitive, Encrypted). Case sensitivity decides whether names like “Homework” and “HOMEWORK” count as different files. Apple’s page explains the behavior but does not assess third-party app compatibility, so choose a case-sensitive variant only if you have a specific reason.

Other formats a Mac works with
HFS+ (Mac OS Extended)
HFS+ is the older standard Mac format. Apple’s archived documentation says macOS still supports it and can boot from it (File System Details). It mainly matters for older Macs or older macOS versions; check your specific system before relying on it.
FAT and exFAT
These are the Windows-compatible choices. Apple’s current Disk Utility guidance is to use MS-DOS (FAT) for Windows volumes of 32 GB or less and ExFAT for Windows volumes over 32 GB.

- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Which format fits your situation?
| Situation | Format | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Startup or data volume on a current Mac | APFS | Apple’s default for macOS 10.13 and later. |
| Older Mac compatibility | HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) | Older standard; verify against your specific OS and device. |
| Windows volume of 32 GB or less | MS-DOS (FAT) | Apple’s Disk Utility guidance. |
| Windows volume over 32 GB | ExFAT | Apple’s Disk Utility guidance. |
| External drive used only with Macs | APFS is available | Works with external, direct-attached storage. |
| External drive shared with Windows | ExFAT or FAT, by size | APFS is not the right pick when Windows must read the drive. |
The deciding factors are operating-system compatibility, whether the volume is for startup or plain data, whether you need encryption or case sensitivity, and whether the drive is empty or already holds files you want to keep.

Open Disk Utility, select the volume in the sidebar and read its format in the main pane. Changing the format means erasing the volume. Apple’s archived APFS FAQ states that converting an APFS volume back to HFS+ requires erasing it (APFS FAQ). Back up everything you need before you erase or reformat any drive.
